Specialties

The Bar Method integrates the fat burning format of interval training, the muscle shaping technique of isometrics, the elongating principles of dance conditioning, and the science of physical therapy to create a revolutionary new workout that quickly and safely reshapes your entire body. The bar method targets the muscles that are most responsible for change and keeps them working intensely and safely long enough to change then follows it up with a stretch that makes the muscles feel and look longer and more graceful. The bar method is well known for it’s knowledgeable teachers and supportive, caring staff. The bar method Solana beach feels more like a spa than a gym filled with strong, beautiful and inspiring women & men of all ages and athletic abilities. It’s a special community in an amazing beach side city!

History

Established in 1991.

Burr Leonard, a former journalist, has been practicing and improving on the exercises that now make up The Bar Method exercise system since 1991. Burr had been an avid Lotte Berk Method student since 1981 and had been teaching since 1991 when she was The Lotte Berk Method’s sole licensee.

In 1991 Burr and Carl Diehl, a lawyer, opened their first exercise studio in Greenwich, Connecticut. In 2000 they founded The Bar Method, Inc. and the next year opened their flagship studio in San Francisco. Since then they have built and franchised many Bar Method studios around the country and have produced two exercise dvds, the first in an ongoing series.

The first Bar Method in San Diego opened in Point Loma — Liberty Station in 2008 and most recently expanded into Solana Beach in March 2011.

Business Owner

Jessica Bowman «aka intensica» is the studio owner & a certified instructor. She was given the infamous nickname by one of her clients over 6 years ago and continues to live up to the name with her creative; fun and «take no prisoners» approach to class.

After earning her BS degree in Biopsychology from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 2002 she moved to San Francisco to pursue a career in pharmaceutical sales. It was there she discovered the bar method and took her first class at the flagship studio in the Marina. In 2007, Jessica moved back to her hometown of San Diego and began teaching the bar method in November 2008. Three years later she opened the first North County San Diego studio in Solana Beach.

Jessica has a long history in athletics from competitive dance to field hockey and long distance running including completing 3 marathons. However, it’s the bar method that’s brought the most challenge (both mentally and physically) as well as the most reward into her
