History

Established in 1999.

With Richard Smith, John founded Aardvark Safaris in 1999. Being more of a «hands on» than formal education kind of fellow, he began his career path as a London restaurateur and passed a couple of happy season as a ski guide in the Alps.

John’s first experience of Africa was mixing cocktails in a Cape Town bar, but he soon broke out and worked as a white-​water rafting guide in the rapids below Victoria Falls. Though this was hardly a conventional introduction to Africa, it started his love affair with the continent that has continued across endless journeys: on horseback, by canoe, on foot, by light airplane, and behind the wheel of his own vehicle.

He still goes back for more and recently climbed Kilimanjaro with a group of nine friends. John’s two children have shared in many of his less extreme adventures and are beginning to be safari experts in their own right: he is a good person to talk to about family travel in Africa, but if you want the real scoop, ask them. Meet the Manager

Victoria L.

Manager

Victoria (Tor) has been in the travel industry since obtaining her degree in business studies and tourism. Her passion for Africa was ignited on an overland trip that took her from Arusha in Tanzania to Victoria Falls in Zambia. As one of the most experienced members of the sales team, during her time with Aardvark Victoria has visited Botswana, Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia and Zanzibar. She has also self-​driven through South Africa and Namibia.

The office scuba diving expert, she has dived in many locations, but most recently in the exotic waters off Southern and Northern Mozambique. Victoria is one of a select few in the office to have reached the top of Mount Kilimanjaro as well as tracked the mountain gorillas and chimpanzees in both Rwanda and Uganda so is well placed to advise on these exhilarating adventures. With Mauritius and Seychelles on the list of places visited, Victoria can help with beach add-​ons as well.
