Steger Haus

We’ve eaten here probably 4 times over the years. When it’s good, it is pretty good although not stellar. When it’s bad, it’s terrible.
Second last time we were there, the salad bar was incredible. Large variety of very fresh ingredients and very clean. The last time we were there it was disgusting, limp veggies, flies, not at all appetizing.
Last time we were there with a large group (8 people). The menu items ordered ranged from german dishes to beef and fish. A full half of our group were quite ill, either later that night or the next day.
Perhaps there’s an issue with some of the cooks, I don’t know or care. We will not return to the Steger Haus.

Had the clams casino back in 2008. Spent my anniversary with my wife @ Sodus bay, and the sodus area. Spent time on the beach and at the pier, and visiting the local apple orchards and farm markets.
Had lunch at Steger Haus. The inside needed some structural work, and the ceiling tiles were due for replacement, BUT THE FOOD WAS EXCEPTIONAL!

It’s over an hour drive to Sodus, but a discount coupon and previous good experiences makes this a worthwhile journey.
The salad bar is kept clean and well-​stocked and has a good variety of standard items with a choice of five dressings. The soup varies; the vegetable beef had lots of meat in a not-​to-​heavy broth. The white bread tasted fresh and homemade but the dark bread was actually cold as if it hadn’t completely defrosted. A bit strange.
I usually get one of the german specialties. My favorite is the Jäger Schnitzel with the buttered noodles. Their Jäger is cooked with a lemon butter sauce and previously I had it once and it was dry, so this time I asked for some beef gravy on the side, Wasn’t necessary, as the Jäger was hot, moist, and tasty. Of the other German items, the onion sirloin steak is very good, but I find the Sauerbraten just a little more sour than I like.
My wife usually has the prime rib which is always good and tried real mashed potatoes which she enjoyed. There are many other non-​German items on the menu almost as if the restaurant started German many years ago and has adapted to more varied tastes. The specialties and two German bottled beers (no drafts of anything) are all that remain of the German theme. I seem to recall that potato pancakes are a call-​ahead special request. I think I’d be hard=pressed to find someone who could respond to my high school German!
Service is friendly and there seem to be a lot of locals who are regular customers. Reservations are usually promptly honored which is good as the small bar is right opposite the door with limited space. Restrooms are tiny so beware!

Wednesday night is prime rib night. It is right out of the oven and delicious. The portion is hefty and the price is right.

I was excited to go here and yes there is a salad bar, and it is simply that (ice berg lettuce, some toppings and dressings), the soup was starchy (corn starchy or floury) and lacked ingredients. The place smelled of mold, it is dark and dank inside and as you walk in the front door. I wish we had tried a German item but we went for their prime rib night. I wouldn’t suggest it. Sorry Steger Haus, I give you Das Boot.

First time here… my wife and I had heard that they had some German food on the menu, which we love. We both ordered the sauerbraten. Unfortunately, both servings tasted different. My wife’s portion was, just OK. Mine was downright revolting. Tasted old, freezer burned, just not good at all. To her credit, the waitress took it back and let me order something else. I had the wiener schnitzel, which was pretty good, though it could have been called veal picatta. The waitress also comped dessert, but even with that, I doubt we’ll be returning any time soon.

My wife and I have been patronizing this restaurant, for Sunday evening meal’s, for a number of years. Never, have we been disappointed. An exceptional salad bar, with homemade relishes and specialty salads, is always well stocked, and clean. The hot soup at the end of the salad bar, which changes daily, has always been wonderful, and filled to overflowing with the main ingredient. The clam chowder has more clams than clambake, and the beef stew is savory with large chunks of delicious beef.
This place knows how to cook fish. The fish is always flaky and moist, and savory and never overdone. Scallops are soft and tender, succulent and delicious. the prime rib beautifully prepared, juicy and moist, and for a real treat try the stuffed pork chop. Wow!
Service is attentive, without being overbearing, and extremely personable and pleasant. You’ll have to hunt for this place, as is well off the beaten path, but the trip and the hunt are well worth it. I can’t wait for next Sunday, when I can once again savored the delicacies of this gem.

I’ve been going to Steger with my family for nearly 20 years now (not exaggerating). It is one of my favorite restaurants in Wayne County (and in the Rochester area, for that matter). I absolutely crave the Schnitzel. Salad bar is awesome, clean, and well kept — complete with hot soup, different every night. This place hasn’t gone wrong for me — ever. I can’t wait to go back the next time!

It had been almost 25 years since I’d last visited Steger Haus and I still remembered the last meal I’d had there, a sweet tasting German version of beef stroghanoff with German potato salad back in 1986 when I’d brought a date with me to meet my grand dad.
This time wasn’t as memorable, but the food was still pretty good and I was in the mood for some fish. The salad bar was well stocked, but the Manhattan clam chowder didn’t have much in the way of clams in it. The crab stuffed broiled Cajun haddock was stuffed with imitation crab. The German potato salad is not your run of the mill canned German potato salad. This is home made and not too sweet, not too tart, just the right touch of seasoning and served hot.
Truth be told, while I was looking for fish, I was disappointed in the menu in that there were very few authentic German selections anymore.
In all fairness, the meal was tasty and filling, the haddock was flaky not overdone and well spiced, but next time, I going for the wiener-​schnitzel.
