Gold’s Gym

I should’ve signed up to write this review a long time ago so here it is…
I loved this place until Michele T. left a few years ago. She is the best fitness instructor EVER. I took all of her classes sometimes spending 3 hours a night taking her classes back to back. I was going 5 days a week (even on holidays) and sometimes more if she was covering a class for someone else. Plus, she had a great personality professionally and personally as well. She was always friendly and helpful. She was extemely knowlegable when it came to fitness. She gave great fitness tips and suggestions for modifying any exercise if someone was not able to do the more advanced version of the exercise. I can’t seem to find anyone else who has a similar style of teaching. She also played great music to work out to which I found was really motivating. I tried other people’s classes and I just don’t see the same results unfortunately. I wish Gold’s did more to entice her to stay. On another note, the parking situation is terrible in Smithtown. Forget about it when we have significant snowfall. Needless to say, I will be canceling my membership (which I had since the gym opened back in 2000) unless they get Michele T. back by some miracle.
The Islip location has much better parking and is a beautiful facility but I have the same problem with finding an instructor who has a teaching style similar to Michele T. Although, I find the staff at both the Smithtown and Islip facilities not very friendly.

I have no idea why this gym doesn’t have reviews and it’s about time it does. I have been a member here for 7 years and I just had to cancel due to relocation, which is really a shame.
Management has gotten so much better over the years, and everyone that works here is friendly. They got rid of all the obnoxious trainers they once had. I have never once had a problem with freezing my membership, bringing a guest, or «negotiating» a lower rate (they lowered the fee for new members, but gave it to existing members if you asked).
The gym is quite large and never too crowded, even during post-​work hours, thanks to LA Fitness opening nearby. I’ve been to a ton of gyms over the past 7 years, and I have to say this gym is way cleaner and in much better shape than most. The help here is fantastic (and they’re all very nice) and they keep the place & weights so clean.
I can’t speak for the classes, but they seem to do very well. Machines break, that will happen anywhere, but they always get repaired.
Some people think it’s a meat head gym, and it depends on how you look at it. Yes there are big dudes on steroids that workout there, but there is such a diverse group that it’s not like you’ll feel out of place.
No pool or basketball courts or anything like that, so if that’s what you want then go to LA Fitness. But if you just want to workout or take classes (and not just stand around and chat with all of your friends in the middle of an unnecessarily spacious gym), then Gold’s is the gym for you.
**And a note to previous reviews I’ve seen: you go to a gym to workout. Go in, get your workout done, socialize if you want, then leave. If the staff not saying hi when you walk in is going to make you want to switch gyms, that’s your problem. If the meanest people in the world worked at the front desk, who cares, how long are you spending at the front desk? If it’s a great gym, why does that matter so much? The people who work here are great for the record… I just don’t understand that logic.

person who handels new membership needs new job. i am waithing for la fitness to open up now
