Tolziens’ Auto Service has been serving the North Shore community for over 55 years. Located in Skokie, IL, we are a family owned and operated full service auto repair shop. We have seven bays, with one dedicated to wheel alignment service. From oil changes to complete engine replacement, electrical diagnoses to battery changes; no job is too small or too large. History

Established in 1978.

The Tolzien Family has been repairing cars in the Skokie and surrounding area since before 1952. In 1952, Bob Tolzien opened Earl and Bob’s Service Station. Steve joined there shop in 1975 after completing school at Greer Technical Institute. In August of 1978 they moved the business to it’s current location and changed the name to Tolziens’ Auto Service Inc. During the years Bob retired and Steve’s wife Maryann became Steve’s partner. They currently employe four people. Mike the lead tech, Tomas, Rogerio along with Danae and Steve running the office.

My family and I have been having our cars serviced at Tolziens for about 15 years. It started with just my husband and I but as our children got cars they too have their cars serviced as well… all in all there are 4 vehicles. We have found that prices are always competitive and sometimes less than other auto repair services. Tolziens ALWAYS guarantee their work. The personal and professional service we receive is very important to us. We would highly recommend Tolziens for any auto problem you encounter.

I am very displeased with Tolzien’s today.
A few months ago I got my brakes repaired. The repair was great, in and out in one day. It was a bit more expensive than what I was expecting, but I put it off for too long and the rotors had to be replaced. Fine.
What has put me off as of last week was the additional assessment after the repair. I was told I had a very bad ball joint in my front passenger wheel. They told me it would be about $ 1000 for the part and labor. Just recently I had my car in at a different auto shop, one closer to home, and they replaced my ball joint for less than $ 100.
Why is the relatively simple repair 10x more at Tolziens? The part out of the store cost 65 dollars and the labor was less than an hour. The wheel has stayed attached since, so I’m sure I wasn’t given shoddy repair.
If you have the option, I would recommend getting a second opinion before servicing here. My brakes could have been 90% cheaper for all I know.

I love Tolzein’s! Ever since I moved to Chicago in 2010, I have been visiting his place and I always go away happy and satisfied. Steve has always been informative and upfront re: repair work needed. Admittedly, he’s not the least expensive place around (for the area I guess it makes sense) but I never felt I was getting ripped off. They also provide a pick up and drop off service. Steve and his staff are nice, helpful people who care about providing a great service. If you live in the Lincolnwood or Skokie area I highly recommend Tolzein’s.

Service is excellent. The lady at the desk is really friendly and engaging. They definitely have their customer service down and geared up.
But I was totally caught off guard by the price for an oil change. The total came to more $ 90. Despite me not asking for a quote, they should have forewarned me; especially after me telling them that I get my oil change from Jiffy Lube.
They gave a thorough check up of the car. But I’m not so sure that’s worth the extra $ 60-​$ 70.

Honest, reliable service! Great customer service. Feel I can rely upon them to always do a great job at a reasonable cost. Have switched from service at the Lexus dealer and am very pleased. They are so trustworthy and so efficient. Icant image going anywhere else for service.

Another impressed customer. I brought in my 03 Focus, and Steve was fabulous. He hooked me up with a ride to work, then a loaner car when we learned the extent of the necessary repairs. There was no upsellling of fluid flushes or obscure belts or «winterizing» or other inflationary tactics I’ve encountered before. When it was time to pay up, they took their time to review the easy-​to-​understand invoice with me.
I searched car forums for similar repair pricing, and learned that their pricing is quite fair. Also, they’d taken care of a few little things (like a new clutch pedal cover– mine had fallen off years ago) gratis. I appreciated them leaving my car cleaner than they found it, too!
Oh, and for the record, I don’t give out 5-​star reviews like candy. They alleviated a lot of stress for me. It sucks to have to drop a wad of cash on unexpected car trouble. The great people at Tolziens made it suck less.

We have been using Tolzien’s Auto Service for our repair needs for several years now and always have exceptional service. The staff are so friendly and knowledgeable. They never do anything that is not required. We always have a list at the end of every appointment of things to watch out for in the coming months. The prices are quite reasonable. I am happy to have found this shop — excellent!

CROOKS!!! This company preys on young girls and takes full advantage of this notion. My company was nearby so the convenience aspect unfortunately played a part in multiple returns. But after certain events I will never return.
I had my headlight replaced there and after ONLY 6 weeks, it burned out. I explained what happened, they repaired it and like clockwork it burned out again. They blamed it on their supplier. Then I went to the dealer for the headlight replacement and they found glasses in the hood of my car!!! Yet, this was not the first time something was left in the hood of my car. They had left a bagel (yes full out bagel) on my engine and then had the audacity to tell me that field mice brought it in. Actually believed them at the time, yeah right. To make matters worse, this company has absolutely zero accountability!
In addition, they had told me that I needed a brake flush a week after I had a brake flush completed. Then they recommended a transmission flush and my dealer just informed me I have another 10−15K miles before that is even close to necessary.
They are overpriced for sub-​par materials and very low quality of service. Save yourself the hassle and NEVER GO TO TOLZIENS!!!

Friendly. Honest. Reputable. Honest. Knowledgeable. Honest. Accommodating… and did I mention honest?!?
They welcome you with a warm smile and they only fix what needs fixing… and still, do it for the most reasonable prices and the best quality parts. And if something should go wrong (as life sometimes does) they stand by their work and never, ever make you feel embarassed when you try to make the same odd sound your car makes when it’s sick.
They are my «car doctors» for life! I highly recommend Tolziens to anyone who wants a worry-​free experience. I have passed their name on to everyone I know.

I was interested in a used car at a dealer elsewhere in Skokie, but I live a few hours downstate. After I convinced the dealer to drop it off here, Tolziens gave it a thorough inspection. They didn’t find anything significantly wrong, though they caught a few things the dealer didn’t either find or mention.
Tolziens was very helpful through the entire process, and within a couple hours after the car was dropped off, they faxed me the report, which they then were sure to go over with me, answering all my questions. They declined to give any of the results to the dealer; I had paid for it, not them, and if they wanted to know, they could ask me.
I don’t think this could have gone any better.

Tolzeins is honest, fairly priced and they take the time to explain exactly what is wrong with your car. I’d taken my car to Doc Able’s and had gotten a HUGE estimate for my car. Tolzein’s fixed my car for at least $ 1,000 LESS.
A friend referred me and said it was a great place to go if you are a woman and don’t know a lot about cars – she was right. I have real confidence that I’m not getting ripped off there.
They won’t tell you that you have a cracked head gasket and will cost $ 1300 when it’s something minor – like an oxygen sensor that had been improperly installed (which is what Doc Able’s had done!)

This shop is conveniently located near downtown Skokie. My boss insists on using this shop — she had her car towed here from where it broke down. They kept her constantly up to date as to her repairs, and I know she was very pleased with their service — she’s a picky lady, so come here if you want to be impressed with high end customer service.
