Hungarian Kosher Foods

his is the place to shop. They have a great selection and they have things you can’t find other places. the produce is sometimes great and sometimes just ok.
Do make sure you check the dates on things. Sometimes they have a tendency to sit on the shelves but all in all, its a great place

Chances if you come here you keep kosher, are going to someones house that keeps kosher or you like eating good food at reasonable prices.
It used to be that back in the day like 20 years ago there were not that many places to get kosher wine and if it was available it tasted something like cough syrup gone bad.
Low and Behold there is a huge kosher wine selection on kosher wines from all around the world. Probably has the biggest selection in The united states besides for Teaneck Winery in NJ.
I find the meat prices very reasonable. Yes there is a manager there who can be kind of moody. But this is the price you have to pay for good food.
I can always finds good cuts of lamb, kosher chicken at reasonable prices, and my favorite: Chocolate Babka. Lamb, chicken, babka and yes duck sauce they have shit loads of it here :)
They represent all the major food groups.
As it says in the bible somewhere, «on the 8^th day the lord created duck sauce»
Do not ask the guys at the deli if they can get you a brisket sandwich with cheese… that would be against the rules here. Do not even let that enter your mind

I like this place. I really do. But sometimes I get fed up with finding one too many outdated products on the shelves.
That being said, as long as you are mindful of that you can find some amazing products for decent prices. Their sales are often great on meat. And I love the grass fed ground beef.
Their deli has some of the best pepper pastrami I have ever had.
All in all its An amazing mom and pop market with great finds and good prices.

I stopped here to pick up some snacks for a breakfast potluck nearby. I didn’t know what to expect, but after a quick walk through… well, I still don’t know what’s going on here. They have a small, but nice bakery and sweets selection and what seemed to be a wide selection of meat. Prices are reasonable. My only complaint is the cashier who was talking down to an elderly couple on front of me. I wasn’t there for the whole transaction, but the level of annoyance and disrespect seemed to be too much. She also turned and talked down to her bagger. She was pleasant enough with me, and I hope the bad attitude was a fluke thing. There was nothing particularly Hungarian, but I’ll have to go back and take and closer look.

My dad was a butcher. A week after he passed away they called our house. Just so happened to be while we were sitting Shiva. they asked for all my fathers contacts. They didn’t even say I’m sorry for your loss. They said, if you are closing his store can you give us all his customer contact information. How could anyone step in a store that has such cold, horrible owners. Such bad people.

I agree completely with Brent B. Hungarian used to be the only game in town if you keep kosher. Now that Jewel has most of our kosher needs, we avoid this place. Absolutely horrible customer service. If you try to return anything, they treat you like a thief. Extremely rude staff. The cashiers never say hello or thank you and they chatter with the baggers in Russian as they check you out. I once asked for ground lamb, and the butcher said he would make me some. 25 minutes later I asked what was going on and he said they don’t have any lamb. Another time I bought a dozen eggs and a bag of apples, and the cashier threw the apples on top of the eggs, breaking two of them, then asked if I still want them.

Chicago knows food. I got a couple of dried salamis, a homemade kishka (which I haven’t seen anywhere), and Romanian brand sausages. Good selection of food and drink for those who keep kosher. The selection of meat was beautiful. Huge slabs of brisket, the likes of which surpass anything I’ve seen in Baltimore.

Some things change, such as one’s spouse wanting to keep kosher and only buying kosher products. Other things have not changed. I still don’t wear a wig and the staff here is still not helpful.
Hungarian has a discount card like at Jewel or Dominick’s. Unlike the big stores, they don’t advertise it; the checkers won’t tell you anything and there is no one at the service desk. So, do as I did and go online, print up an application and fill it out. When you pay, give it to the checker and tell her you want a card (because there is nobody at the service desk, remember?) You’ll get a card and a keytag and hopefully, some nice discounts on your wine and meat.
Prices here are better than at the Northbrook Garden Fresh. For example, the same Empire turkey breast I bought for $ 25 was $ 41 at Garden Fresh, for the same size breast. Kosher chicken was $ 1.89/lb as opposed to $ 3.29 lb at GF. Stay away from the cryovac bag o’ Costa Rican beef rib roast, it is nasssssssssty! And they apparently aren’t too choosy about what they throw into their meat grinder-​the ground beef was fairly inexpensive but full of bone chips. Yum!
Excellent selection of grocery items. I can find things here that I don’;t see anywhere else, except maybe the kosher GF and kosher Jewel.
Still the best place for wine, though Binny’s competes pretty well when they have a good sale and if you’re buying for Passover, get there early, a month in advance at least or you’ll end up with Rashi Light Pink Concord, which like that Costa Rican beef, is nasssssssty.
Back to the service… still sucks. I overheard a gentleman inquiring about plastic refrigerator liners and he was told they didn’t have. Not even three feet away, they had a shit ton stacked up. Some people just don’t want to make an effort to work, do they?
One thing I am very disappointed in is the closing of Denali’s. I understand that a landlord likes to make money but you can’t raise the rent so high that you lose a tenant with a successful business. Now that space has been empty for over a year and the area lost a good dairy restaurant. How much rent are you bringing in NOW???
My rant is over. I will still come here more often for meat, now that I have my little keytag.

I want to write a good review, because I was to support independent grocers, rather than chains like Jewel, BUT … this place is not as clean as you would like and the food is only ok. I still go there right before Pesach, because it is so easy. You do not have to think about what is ok and what is not, because everything there is ok!

Bisli and bomba!!!
Yup for anyone that doesn’t know what I’m talking about, these are snacks that are popular in Israel. Bisli has a falafel flavored crispy wheat snack (sort of like potato chips). Bombas are like a puffy cheeto, but are peanut butter flavored instead of cheese.
Food is Kosher, so more expensive than your grocery store may be (unless you live in Chicago then your jewel is a rip-​off and you should come here to pay for quality instead of whatever jewel gives you).

Pretty nice place. I had to schlep out here to get a few things, in particular vegan butterscotch chips, and ended up buying a lot of fun things. I didn’t see much that was Hungarian, but everything is kosher. I wish they were closer. Staff was pretty friendly too. They have a shoppers club card, but I probably won’t remember to bring it the few times I’ll get out here.
Definitely worth checking out, and good for those things you have a hard time finding.

I keep kosher and live near Hungarian Kosher, but I make a point of avoiding this place. The selection is fine, but the staff have never been anything but rude and unhelpful to me. So, I spend my money at the Jewel on Howard, Garden Fresh Market in Northbrook, or Trader Joe’s. They have everything I need (and then some) without the nasty attitude.

Completely unhelpful if you are not a regular customer. We bought a bad pound of corned beef (visible spots) and tried to return it the next day. Hard time by cashier and by older guy behind deli counter who belittled my spouse and refused to take it back. Asked for the younger store manager, who refunded money reluctantly, told spouse he doesn’t remember ever seeing her in store and ran after her as she left telling her not to bother coming back. With surly staff, dirty shelves and an overall bad attitude, it’s no surprise that the kosher Jewel on Howard Street is kicking their a*s.

Ha, awesome place. It is extremely well stocked with kosher foods for those of us who are keeping kosher. For those of you who aren’t, there is a category of stuff in there for you too ;)
The best thing is that it has some unique israeli import foods/​candies if you know where to look. Oh, and chocolate halva bars!

This is the place to shop. They have a great selection and they have things you can’t find other places. As Adele S said, the produce is sometimes great and sometimes just ok. The meat section is great. My family eats kosher and it is fantastic. I like the fish department there but I don’t do the cooking in my house (mercifully).
The bakery section is great but my mom bakes a lot so we don’t get much from them.
I have found them helpful but I am obviously Jewish and maybe that makes a difference.

This place has a huge selection. Seriously, you might try looking here if you want a specialty food that they don’t have at the regular supermarket.
However, I’ve had multiple experiences with bringing things home from this store (specifically from the dairy case) to find them already spoiled. Be very careful.

This is a really big kosher foods store. The store is well organized with friendly sales people and plenty of parking. And, of course, the huge wine section is what bumps this one up to 5 starts!
