History

Established in 2004.

After years of renting space in generic dance studios, the owners of The Tango Room (being from Argentina) wanted to open a studio that would be the home and heart of Argentine Tango in Southern California. Converting an old beauty shop into a welcoming dance studio took many months of hard work but once it was finished, The Tango Room Dance Center had its gala opening on one of the Tango’s most important dates, December 11, 2004. December 11 is the International Day of Tango in which cities around the world celebrate the birthday of Carlos Gardel, the icon of Tango. Since its opening in 2004 The Tango Room has seen the most prominent names in tango teach and perform on its floor. The Tango Room has also become the home away from home for hundreds of people who have become tango students and afficionados.

Meet the Business Owner

Angel and Julie E.

Business Owner

Angel Echeverria grew up dancing tango in the clubs of Buenos Aires during the Golden Age of Tango, learning from the original masters of this dance. When the tango was forced underground during decades of political repression, Angel’s love for the dance moved him to continue dancing even when it was dangerous to do so. Angel is admired for his distinctive style, extraordinary musicality, smooth lead, classic foot work and ability to improvise any step.

Julie Friedgen has been Angel’s partner for sixteen years. They met on the dance floor. A former ballet and flamenco dancer, Julie appreciates the importance of solid technique as the foundation upon which a dancer creates personal style. Julie loves the moments when a student’s eye light up as they get that Tango is a profound reflection of life. Angel and Julie teach a beginners class every Tuesday night, and intermediate/advanced classes every Thursday night.
