Sports Plus Day Camp

I highly recommend Sports Plus to anyone looking for a fun active safe camp. I have a 10 year old girl and 11 year old boy and we are going on our 3^rd summer there.
They come home excited with new stories everyday
Oh yea and exhausted !
Rick, the director is amazing. He’s been running it for years and knows what it takes to make a camp run smoothly. There’s nothing routine about this camp and that’s what the kids love.
I particularly love the extended hours for us working moms
It’s no wonder why this camp books up so fast.

My Daughter has been a camper here for the last 5 summers. We are all huge fans of Sports Plus in Sherman Oaks. Rick is fantastic and does an amazing job of keeping the kids safe while having fun.
Each one of the days is organized by age and interest. Each child has a couple of options for their day. The children are supervised by teenagers that are mostly responsible and polite. The jewel of the camp continues to be Rick. Rick does a wonderful job of managing the staff, tending to demanding parents and making each camper feel special.
I highly recommend Sports Plus.

This camp is by far the best camp out there for all ages (5 – 14). My two sons have only been going 1 summer and have already fallen in love with the activities, campers, and loving counselors. Rick and Howard are «not normal», always helping with financial aid and making sure every single kid has the chance to have the summer of a lifetime. They are like family treating every kid like their own! We can’t say enough nice things about this camp! CAN’T WAIT TILL NEXT SUMMER!!! WE LOVE SPORTS PLUS!

Great camp all 3 of my kids went there the summer of 2015. They had a great time so many activities throughout the day. I am a happy camper. Lol

My son has had a great experience at this camp. He is 5 and it was his first time at day camp. Every morning he asked if he could go to camp and every night he came home happy and exhausted. Although, he was too young to go on some of the field trips, the counselors still made sure that he had lots of fun. The younger kids have choices like bowling, movies, roller skating and miniature golf during the week. You can purchase lunch for $ 5 and there is also a snack shack on Tues/​Thurs. It seems like a lot of negative reviews about this camp involve policies that are on their website. But, from what I have seen, Sports Plus is 100% kid approved. We will be going back next summer!

My son went here last year and this year, and this is MY LAST time after what just occurred. For some reason they have a STUPID policy which I just found out that if you don’t go three times a week you cannot go on the theme park trips. Well, my son has been going three times a week all summer long. This week we took a trip to Florida and so he could not go. I just brought him in for the Disneyland trip, and HOWARD the owner had the NERVE to actually tell us he could not go on the trip because he wasn’t in this week. ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!! He has been there the entire summer and he turned him away. NO EXCEPTIONS. Apparently even for good clients.
This year my son constantly complained about RUDE teenage counselors that were always yelling at the kids. After speaking with Howard, he said he would «speak» to them, but nothing ever happened. They continued to be rude and use foul language in front of the kids. And during pickup, all they do is flirt with each other, while screaming kids names out for them to come to the car.
They are the most unorganized, and honestly my son was bored all summer. Complete waste of money and rude management, and OBVIOUSLY they do not take care of their good clients, they just don’t care.
I was SHOCKED that management could be so rude. But it makes sense, RUDE management, rude counselors. Checking out other camps for next year for sure.

If u could give zero stars I would! I’ve sat for 15 minutes at pickup waiting for my kid while the counselors run around not knowing what to do. When I politely suggested using walkie talkies he was very rude and told me how wrong I was. My son was bored and want given any instruction at the specialty camp until I called to find out what was going on.

My son is 8 years old and this is his 2^nd year in Sports Plus in Sherman Oaks. He absolutely loves it! He always comes home happy and excited.
I was surprised to see negative reviews and some of them have no ground. Please understand as any establishment, this camp has POLICY too and if you don’t agree with it, you should NOT signed your child for it. Two points about camp policy (you sign it when you register your child): NO electronics (camp is not responsible for it) and camp fees are due prior to the camper’s start of camp. Very simple.
Here is what I like about this camp:
1. Various activities every day — my son doesn’t get bored (bowling, movies, swimming etc). Plus sports of course, he plays it all. Also, every Friday is a different field trip.
2. Very nice and polite counselors. They are young, fun with a lot of energy. My son is sensitive to other people comments, he never mentioned anything negative, only good.
3. Flexible schedule — I can bring my son for a whole week, 3 days or 1 day a week. Love it.
4. I always see Rick, he keeps everything organized.
5. Great mix of children. I was not sure about what my child could possible learn from other kids (some bad habits or words :), but so far I have not seen or heard anything unusual or bad. Good sign!
This camp has been around for 33 years and I see why. Good management, good people and great activities.

I do not recommend this summer camp at all. Last summer I worked there not for the camp but as a one on one so I got to see how unorganized and unsafe this program is. Staff: Most staff are teenagers that are pretty much just there to flirt with each other and talk badly to the children (especially the counselors that are still in high school). You think the more older adults would be any better but that is not the case. The camps director would talk bad/​yell to his staff and parents. No respect what so ever. Activities: For the first hour they have a sport game or depending on some days they chose between Golfing or bowling. The ones that stay at camp pretty much don’t do anything. Just stay inside auditorium and play with their phones and laptops. The children that are under the age of 6 are not allowed to go to any of the field trips other than swimming. They stay at camp all day without doing much. The children are on their own the whole time. When the children go golfing, bowling, Ice skating, theaters, and beach they’re all on their own! I’m surprised they haven’t lost a child (maybe they have but not when I was there) I would fear for their safety. Especially at the beach. Like I said before staff is only there to socialize so most of them stay in the sand talking to each other.***this review is towards the Sherman Oaks but to be honest I’m sure they’re all the same.

My son was in the Sherman Oaks program for a week and we did not like it at all. He was 5 and they were not good with the younger kids at all. The counselors were teenagers. They didn’t know how to get the younger kids to feel comfortable and participate. The camp was disorganized. I thought there would be lots of structured sports activities and a lot of the time they were just playing around. The before and after care was worse than just babysitting. I would come to pick him up at the end of the day and find him just sitting there. The manager spoke to the counselors in a rude way and raised his voice to them in front of the kids.

My son has been spending summers (and sometimes winter breaks) with Sports Plus since Kindergarten. He’s in middle school now and still enjoys it. He likes that he can plan his own day from mix-​and-​match options like movies, mini golf, skating, swimming, bowling, beach, group sports and more. On Fridays there’s a field trip to an amusement park. Every summer, he looks forward to the San Diego camping weekend that includes a Padres game. We love the morning pickup option. Rick and Howard run a fantastic team. The staff is great. Everything is very organized. I like knowing that my camper is safe, engaged in activities, going to the best spots in So Cal, making friends and having fun.

Sports Plus has been a part of our lives for the last 7 years or so and my daughter’s a very happy camper. She’s made great friends, loves the counselors and enjoyed very active summers and winters with Sports Plus. Howard and Rick are very involved, actively involved in the day to day and a pleasure to work with. We especially love the variety of activities throughout the week, good choice of theme parks and stay late opportunities for the older kids. I think the annual weekend San Diego trip is my daughter’s favorite summer event. She’s attended 3 times and talked about it for days each time. My daughter has literally grown up at Sports Plus and wants to be a part of the counselor in training program next summer. Sports Plus Day Camp is what summers are meant to be!

My son attended 3 days of camp at the Chatsworth Hills Academy location. The first day he chose to go miniature golf in the am in Sherman Oaks. There were no camp counselors to watch over these kids while playing golf. Instead the people we paid to watch our kids stayed inside the building while sending the kids outside in a public place. Ok so I let that go because they all made it back to the campus.
On the second day, the kids all stayed on campus. My son said that some of the kids were throwing ice at him pretty hard and he kept telling them to stop but they wouldn’t. So as he ran after one of them to grab the ice and then another camper swacked him in the ear with the handle of a jump rope. The camp counselors did nothing to stop the incident or punish the kids that were misbehaving. Then today my son came home and said that this one particular boy had been name calling and threatening to fight other campers. At first I thought he may have been exaggerating but my son took his iPad with him to camp and videotaped two boys kicking and fist fighting in the recreation room. The physical fight went on for a lengthy period of time and no camp counselor or any adult paid any attention to any of the campers in that room. The video literally shows the one boy kicking the other boy and both boys punching each other with their fists.
I definitely don’t think this is the proper environment for anyone that cares about their child’s safety. Kids in this age range need to be supervised!

This is my daughter’s second summer at Sports Plus. I enrolled her because my younger brother had been going to Sports Plus every summer since he was 5 (he is 17 now) and always enjoyed it. My daughter loves coming here and is super excited to go to camp every morning. She comes home exhausted, which is a good thing considering you are paying for the camp to keep them active, not to babysit them. This year she is old enough to go on the Friday field trips — she is over the moon with excitement.
This camp is not in any way cheap, but neither are any of the others in the area. At least you can see that they invest everything they charge in entertaining the kids.

I can only speak for the Sherman Oaks location. I cannot recommend this camp because of the horrible counselors they hire. Many of them are selfish, apathetic, spoiled teenagers who are busy texting all day and have no business being around children. We had a particularly horrible counselor — let’s call her, say, Genevieve– who I hope gets blacklisted from all camps forever. I hope my review aids in getting her blacklisted, because if I had gotten a chance to talk to this little ginger brat, she would never show her face at another camp again. This is what she did on the trip to Disneyland:
— She talked my 7-​year-​old daughter and her best friend into going on a ride that they were terrified to go on. All but 2 little girls were crying after being forced to go on this ride that Genevieve wanted to go on.
— When my daughter and her friend wanted to go on the Winnie the Pooh ride (bless their sweet innocent little hearts), Genevieve told them that ride was «for babies.» They did not get to go on it.
— When my daughter’s friend began talking about her Princess autograph book, Genevieve told her, «Don’t waste your book here. All the real princesses are at Disneyworld.»
Pretty shocking, huh? Thank goodness the director did the right thing and fired this evil little wench, but somehow he and his team just don’t know how to screen interviewees or pick them. Genevieve was absolutely the worst, but there were other counselors who tolerated bullying (as another reviewer mentioned) and general bad behavior. He is a decent guy, but with the kinds of counselors they hire, I cannot recommend the Sherman Oaks camp.
One thing they do that’s great (another reviewer mentioned it) is they send out a weekly newsletter and make sure to mention each kid at some point during their camp stay (ie «so-​and-​so scored a goal…»). It’s very nice but unfortunately not enough to add another star.

There are thieves at the Calabasas location also

My kids (ages 9 and 6) attend the summer Sports Plus Day Camp in Calabasas and they love it! There are a ton of activities for each age group to do… the bigger kids get to choose where they go each morning (bowling, mini golf, beach, movies), and each afternoon they can choose to go to the pool (younger kids included, with lessons included). There are vans for each activity, ready to go. There are awesome field trips on Fridays and even a weekend sleepover camp for the older kids. I like how the kids are divided by age group and the counselors seem to be interested in caring for the kids and getting to know them individually. They escort your kids to your car in the afternoon pickup, and even help them with their backpacks and seatbelts. Once a week they publish a newsletter, and the kids are excited to see their name in it for highest bowling score or most soccer goals scored. The little touches count. :) I just love how organized everything is, and the individual attention to my kids. My kids are excited to go each day. :)
