Norway Store

At 8 am Monday morning, I was worried about seating. Not a problem. Friendly staff went the extra mile and made sure the hot chocolate for my kids had whipped cream. Child portions were ample, kids could not eat as much as was there, and they ate more than they usually do. Kids both had the norwegian kids breakfast. Got a box for the left over bacon (thick and the best I’ve ever had) and hash browns (nice and crispy). Had lot’s of (oldish) family portraits on the walls — way cool. Was able to pick up munchies for the resort (juice, cookies, etc). There’s a barbershop too, but they are not open on Monday, so we’ll hit that Tuesday. The places convenience to the resort means we can come here a lot.

What a fun little place. Being of Norwegian decent I was super excited by this place. I wish I could have eaten at the Kafe but since it was a holiday, it was closed. The prices in the market were great and couldn’t help but buy a lot of unnecessary stuff!
I wouldn’t mind coming back, but next time we’re eating at the Kafe!

What an odd, interesting little place.
We went here because we forgot to get vinegar at Wal-​Mart, and it was close. Outside, there were some perennials for sale, real cheap. Hmm… what else would this place have?
Hah. Who knew? It’s called the Norway Store, so it would almost have to have Scandinavian stuff, and it did! T-​shirts, coffee mugs, cookbooks, trivets, canisters, rolling pins and of course, snacks and other foodstuff.
Perhaps catering to those who are staying at the resort across the way, there was a wonderful supply of food items in smaller sizes. The cooler boasted locally-​made butter and LOADS of fish and seafood. The teeny produce and staples area had everything you’d normally need. They also sell fried foods to go.
I thought this place was a wonderful little surprise. As the Norwegians would say, fantastisk!

My friend rented a home in Sheridan for a month. We stopped by here the first day to check it out. As we were browsing, we saw a package of red meat that had brown spots on it – in other words, bad meat! The expiration day was that day. After that, we knew we could not purchase anything else ‘fresh’ as we were sickened by the look of the meat and not trusting of the rest. We are mostly «Fish and vegetable» consumers. Even if we did trust their products, they barely had any vegetables. The young woman at the check-​out counter was very nice. However she had no idea if they had self-​starting fire logs or lighters.
We then went to Arts in Sandwich. Much better! We had purchased a container of laundry soap at Norways. I saw the same kind and size for $ 6.99 less at Arts…
Too bad since Norway’s is much closer!

Norway Store is a cool quirky original. There’s an amazingly extensive selection here of Scandinavian foods, even everyone’s favorite Lutefisk. I highly recommend it to Amy C.
From the outside it looks like a gas station or general store, but once you go down the rabbit hole inside, there are lots of unusual items all over the place. Homemade Kringla, wooden gnomes, Norwegian crafts, and much more. Potato sausage, pickled herring, Swedish pancake mix, lots of interesting things in the frozen case too. Exotic meats like ostrich burgers, buffalo, elk, oysters, smoked St. Louis ribs, homemade dumplings, homemade meatballs, and many more items. Even Uff Da ice cream.
The décor is great, on top of the shelves are unique collections of porcelain decanters, old signs, bottles, knick knacks, just lots of fun stuff to look at all over the place, which gives the place a fun cozy vibe.
Counter service has always been friendly, and they take extra care to double bag the pickled herring. Overall this is a very unique store worth a detour off I-​80 if you’re headed out to Starved Rock.

Delicious kringla, great people! Even though I’ve left the area, I still have items shipped to my Nordic family members — this year, the cloudberry jam was a hit, and of course, the kringla. The kringla actually freezes pretty well, so you can have them ship a few dozen, keep one out, and put the rest in the freezer — so you’ll never have a kringla emergency. And if you find yourself at a boring family event, and are in need of some great Dad jokes to lighten the mood, they’ve got a whole section of Olé & Lena and Norwegian jokes, sure to make your cousins groan.

Won’t stop here again! Stopped for the restaurant fried chicken they advertise at 6 PM and they had no more. They stated they close at 7. So it’s normal to run out of chicken? I usually buy a pie baked by a local woman but they didn’t have any pies either. So I was just going to buy a coke and they told me any charge under $ 5 required she add 50 cents… even though I was trying to spend around $ 30. They should train the little girls they have working here what customer service is and how to keep customers. Maybe because it’s in the middle of no where they with no competition they can be completely incompetent.

Great little store in essentially the middle of cornfields in Illinois. This is a beautiful example of America and its best. The store is over hundred years old and acts as more of a community house than a grocery store. They do have fuel pumps at very reasonable prices. Inside the store is stocked with different types of food including Norwegian smoked herring and other delicacies. Basically if the store doesn’t have what you looking for you don’t really need it!
If you have time I highly suggest eating breakfast at the café inside. Ask for the bacon egg and cheese troll sandwich. One of the best breakfast sandwiches I have had.

We made a trip out here from Chicago to stock up on some Scandinavian food items. It was an interesting little store. There were way more grocery and sundry items than specific Nordic fare, but I managed to come up with a few goodies.
Their homemade pickled herring is good, but a tad sweet. I haven’t tried the potato sausage yet, nor the lutefisk, but that will happen soon. I also got Swedish yellow peas, gooseberry jam, Swedish mustard and a few things I’ve forgotten. Most of these items I could have scored closer to home, but it was a fun trip to the country.
Next time we visit, I hope the restaurant will be open.

Although the atmosphere is very small town and not much as décor goes it is not worth overlooking. They have a little breakfast and lunch restaurant attached and we just love the breakfast here. The bacon they cook is thick and very tasty! My eggs were cooked perfect and the biscuits and gravy is good!
We enjoyed the food so much we ate there twice on our two night stay at Fox River resort!
