Pridwin Hotel

I’ve had the delight of attending an annual managers meeting here for the last 4 years. The desk staff is always extremely helpful, as are all the other employees I’ve interacted with. The food is amazing; delightful appetizers, well put together entrees, and everything I’m looking for in a full dining experience. Maybe it’s just my stroke of luck but each time I’ve stayed here the pool has been scattered with beautiful people. What more could you ask for, great food and beautiful people.
Although this is an older family owned establishment, it’s truly a relaxing dirty dancing era type paradise. If you’re looking for a Ritz-​Carlton type experience then maybe shelter island isn’t for you, but if you’re looking to unplug, clear your mind, and get swept away into another era then rest assured, the Pridwin has you covered.

The sunset views are beautiful, two stars. We had a 7:30 reservation on Saturday night, the restaurant was mostly empty. After being seated we waited nearly 30 minutes for the waiter to take our drink order. after another 20 min our over priced watered down drinks showed up. Dinner was served 1 hour later and was delivered cold. We could not complain to the waiter because we could not get his attention. He was kind enough to have another round sent over to the table after I went and found him hanging out in the back of the restaurant. Dinner was 3 hours long and we were only able to order two drinks.
Food– 3 orders of the filet, all three served cold. Very tastey, althought small portions.
2 orders of the ¼ chicken served hot over cold mashed potatoes. Chicken very dry.
Drinks– watered down. Had 2 cucumber martinis. they were served with a giant round ice cube. I removed the ice cube and there was barely a single sip in the glass. I asked for one without the ice and was told they could not serve it without. FYI Martinis dont get ice.
Service– horrible. waiter came to the table 3 times in 3 hours once was to deliver the check. I had to track him down to order drinks. We asked a passing waitress to please find our waiter her comment was that the table behind us may have thrown him in the water. This is a loss for the owner. The 5 of us are usually good for 5 or 6 drinks each.
Tip: Always visit the table you just served, maybe your guests need something once the food is delivered, fork, salt etc. Replace the menu in the display case outside with a current one. When you serve a 45 dollar filet the size of a bottle cap, make sure it at least gets to the table hot.

The Two stars are for the outside of the hotel. Small pool (at least there is one), tennis courts, dock with non motorized activities (kayaking, hydro bikes, etc) which btw are not included in the high per night rate! Once inside the quaint but tired hotel things start to go downhill. We were given a 3^rd floor room and an actual metal key that we needed to sign some form to receive. We then proceeded to look for an elevator for myself, pregnant wife, 2 kids, and 4 suitcases. What do you know?, no elevators in the hotel! The lady at the front desk looked at us and asked begrudgingly… do you want me to you some help? Uhh… yeah! I decided to climb up the narrow stairs with the kids and a suitcase to start getting them situated and ready for bed. After getting the key in the jiggly lock the fun really started. The only thing the room had going for it was that it was big and the AC was really pumping. The bathroom was weirdly shaped and poorly lit with an old, tired, tiny sink and toilet. The shower, no tub was tiny and dark. A tiny metal shelf for toiletries. No coffeemaker, no alarm clock, tiny 21 inch tv, paper thin walls, no wifi, even though they say in certain parts they have it… I couldn’t find it! If this hotel was priced between $ 100-​$ 150 I would’ve probably expected what I got and be happy with it. Btw… about 15 mins later I go down to the lobby to see how my wife is doing and she is still standing with the bags and no help. I decide to bring up the remaining 3 bags on my own! I’m guessing that you’ll only be paying for the location. If that’s your thing, then be prepared to pay $ 400+ a night. Btw, when parking fills up at night, you’ll end up parking on the grass by a side, dark road. Everything is old and tired at the Pridwin and its in need of a renovation ASAP!

The only thing this place has going for it is the location, the rental bikes, the air conditioning, and the shower. The hospitality is non existent. I found out they had a pool the day I left. It’s hard to believe they are not embarrassed for charging $ 500 a night for a room with a TV that’s smaller than a computer monitor, beds that actually have springs in them, and serving soup kitchen quality food.

It is a perfect place to relax! Wonderful views form the deck, especially the sunsets! The breakfast buffet is delicious! The Wednesday night BBQ is quite the spread! We loved the mussels and clams! You won’t go hungry! Save room for the brownies, they are delicious! There was great band that got everyone up dancing! There is a lot to do right at your finger tips! We relaxed by the poolside, went sailing on a sunfish and paddled on the paddle board. There are also tennis courts! There is also a beach where you can sunbath on comfy lounge chairs. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. We also had fun exploring the island by bicycles rented right at the Pridwin. Our room and bathroom was immaculate. The air conditioner worked well. As you can tell, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Pridwin. We will definitely be back!

Lets just say this place is absolutely amazing. SO peaceful, and the view is to die for. Id recommend going on a Wednesday for the BBQ! guests are served first at their awesome buffet style dinner. (It does get super busy with other guests from the island who attend) There’s good music, good food, GREAT cocktails… oh and unlimited beer until 8:30? THAT had me sold. It really just was a beautiful experience. one that shouldn’t be missed.

My family vacations every summer on Shelter Island. We have always had dinner at the Pridwin as part of our vacation experience and have been extremely happy with the service and the food. This year, however, was horrendous on both accounts. We were a party of 13 and were seated on the deck. Our reservation was for 7:30 and we arrived at 7:25. It was 8:15 before we received menus and our drink order was taken. The drinks came to the table sporadically with a long time in between. Our food order wasn’t taken until after 9:00. Suffice to say that our dinner wasn’t completed until well after 10:00 and we had young children with us. The waitress was sweet but slow and flighty. It felt like it was her first night, and we were there in mid July. The food was ok, not great and some people were served cold food. This was always one of our favorites, but we will pass next year. For the money we spend in dinner and bottles of wine for 13 people, it was a huge disappointment.

Nice hotel. Has old world charm directly on the beach. Alittle pricey, but all hotels on Shelter island are. Their breakfast area is really nice, you can sit out on their deck, have a nice meal and enjoy views of the beach and bay. It is really quiet too! Staff is nice, most with British accents. Two drawbacks are the small rooms, I mean really small. The second is that it is on a hill and it is a steep walk from the parking area to the hotel. They do have steps, but there are a lot.

The Pridwin Hotel is not a Holiday Inn Express, it is not a Courtyard Marriott, it is a step back into the past. Don’t go to this hotel if you want a cookie cutter experience and fast check-​in check-​out lanes. This is a hotel for people that want to enjoy Shelter Island and the people that live and work there, it is a place to bring your family so you can get a taste of what was and what could be. It is the people that work at this hotel that make it remarkable. I had the chance to stay three nights at this treasure and didn’t regret one second. I met Jean Torrealba, the F&B Director, who made sure that everything we ate and drank was served to perfection. This is a young man who knows how to run a successful team. He even said happy staff happy guest/​life. I had the luck to meet the Laubis sisters, who both work at the lobby bar, throughout the day, and left on Sunday feeling sad that I wouldn’t have the pleasure of one more dreamy day being served the wonderful cocktail delights that always came fast with a smile.
So I repeat, don’t go to the Pridwin if you are looking for another boring stay at a cubicle hotel, do go to the Pridwin if you want something new and old, if you want to make friends and have great service. Go to the Pridwin if you want to feel like a kid again, and to be excited to be at a hotel. But most importantly if you do go, say hi to Sara and Rachel at the bar and order some oysters because Jean Pierre will make sure they are perfect.

The Pridwin Hotel is absolutely lovely, and the staff is very helpful. The room was nice and fresh, and the location is unbeatable.

Spent the night at the Pridwin for my anniversary… we stayed in one of the water view cottages and it definitely needs a good updating… the whole hotel does for that matter. We also went in the beginning of September but after Labor Day so the restaurant and the bar were closed for the season… the whole town was basically closed down already. Next time we decide to go to Shelter Island we are going to stay at the Sunset Beach hotel right down the road… it looked a little more updated and the views were better than the Pridwin. Also, the breakfast that was included with your stay was pretty sad… not sure if it’s better during their on season but off season was way off!!! Even though the place wasn’t up to par my husband and I still enjoyed our night… thank goodness for the two bottles of wine!!!

I’ve been staying at the Pridwin for 3 summers and it is the ABSOLUTE best. The views from the hotel and restaurant are exceptional, the food is excellent, and the service is great.
My recommendations: Hang out in the lobby on rainy days and get to know other hotel guests, take a bike out and explore the island (shell beach is amazing), and definitely go swimming off the dock in front of the hotel!
The Hamptons are not my cup of tea (too trendy) but if you’re looking for a place to relax, swim, and enjoy nature — the Pridwin on Shelter Island is the place to go.

Had lunch in a rainy 4^th of July. Lovely view of the water. The hotel is like stepping back to simpler times. Staff seemed inexperienced and had difficulty with our order of 2 coffees and 2 lobster rolls.

I had lunch at the restaurant recently with a family group of five adults (and one small child) and really enjoyed it. The price was reasonable, the food was excellent and the staff was great. The only bad thing was my coffee was luke warm to cold, but otherwise it was all very good.

We have been visiting the Pridwin Hotel for many years, and absolutely love it.
The place feels like home, and has a very unpretentious retro atmosphere. The staff is very friendly from the waiters to bartenders, and remembers us from past years. The food is excellent, as well as the drinks, including delicious bloody mary’s in the am. The location is absolutely beautiful, with some of the most gorgeous sunsets and sunrise’s that we have ever seen. Me and my fiancé are actually getting married here in early Oct, and cannot wait!

So so experience. They gave us a half priced deal bc it was the start of the season, but there were several drawbacks that made it a less than ideal stay.
First, bar and restaurant were closed, which wasn’t really made clear when we made the reservation.
Two, staff was helpful but not really friendly. Gave us bad recommendations and places to eat.
Three, place itself was a little grungy: weird furnishing in the lobby, industrial carpet in the bedrooms, dingy curtains, etc. Not really the «cute» inn we were going for.
We were debating between this place and the Ram’s Head. In retrospect, I think the Ram’s Head would have been nicer and it is about the same price.

Stayed two nights. $ 500 with taxes
Our room had great views, and unlike our daughter and her husband’s room, ours was very roomy and comfortable. Negative: the sink had toothpaste residue from a previous occupant.
For older guests, this place is a challenge for the knees, there is no elevator serving the three or four floors, depending on where you enter. Hauling luggage up a flight of stairs or two is challenging for some folks.
The (DEFECTIVE) Emergency Exit from the second floor:
I did not feel safe in this hotel due to the defective emergency exit stairs.
Let me state that the second floor emergency exit is not usable at this time (as of 9÷30÷2012 when we checked out), due to a missing step tread, and a rotted stringer.
The emergency exit is marked in the hallway. Opening the door you proceed past a sign on another door which says «Not An Exit,» which is confusing at first glance. Up a short flight of stairs is an exterior door leading to an exterior landing and stairs down the rear of the building.
BEWARE: THE FIRST STEP IS MISSING as you step off the landing.
The stringer to which it WAS attached is full of dry rot. The balance of these steps are precarious as well, due to the dry rot.
If evacuation were required, no one can use these exit stairs safely. Serious injuries would result, especially if at night, as there are no lights illuminating these deficient stairs. Some of the other steps show signs of dry rot too.
One can only hope they rebuild these with pressure treated lumber or replace with steel before next season, if not immediately. This is a real saftey issue.
Room Service:
On our 2^nd day we had the do not disturb sign turned to service room, but no room service. I made my own beds later in the day. Towels sort of dried out.
Other things to do:
Several single speed bikes were available for free. Nice…
Want to use a Kayak? $ 12/​hr for a single $ 14/​hr for a double. Not nice.
Want to play Tennis? Sign on court– «Pay before you Play» Not nice.
Continental Breakfast is marginal with cold box cereal, greasy donuts, coffee. A plus is the fresh fruit. This needs updating, with better choices. Hampton Inn offers better, Pridwin should step up to the plate.
Food for the wedding was exceptional, so they have the ability! Striped bass and sauce was great, as was the beef tenderloin, and lobster pasta. Everyone commented on how good the food was. Service was prompt as well.
Overall impression:
Interesting older hotel, with a fifties — sixties feel with a slightly musty, beachy smell on the main floor.
The bottom line: Nothing, aside from checking in, made us feel special at the Pridwin. I kept feeling like a wallet. I kept mine closed. We won’t be returning.

This is a review for the restaurant.
Came here last night with a group of 6 for dinner. Dined on the deck, which has an amazing view.
Service: The service here was FANTASTIC! The waiters were very attentive, the bar manager came over and gave us a delicious treat (shots), the manager came over several times and checked on the food, our service and overall happiness :) Water was always full, drinks were delicious.
Food: We had the 3 course meal for dinner ($ 30).

This place is great and just a bit down the road from sunset beach, wayyyyyyy better food and the service is incredible.

I give this place 3.5 stars. Very cute place with nice staff. But the rooms are tiny, even for NYC standards. Ironing our clothes (for the wedding we were there for) was not as easy as it could’ve been due to lack of space (also because their iron is pretty cheapo but I guess they’re afraid people will steal it otherwise?). There was also no table so when we bought sandwiches for a quick lunch before the ceremony, we had to use the ironing board as the table (we left it clean! i swear!).
Their «continental breakfast» was also pretty lackluster. Just english muffins and yogurt and mini-​boxes of cereal for food.
Plus side is that the beds were comfy, the atmosphere is homey, and the views of the water are fantastic. So so beautiful. I’d come back here, but for $ 230 per night (w/​taxes), I wish their breakfast was better!
