Mac’s Diner

Came in for breakfast. The waitress was nice and polite. I had the country steak breakfast and a coffee and chocolate chip malt. The portions of the steak and hashbrowns were generous. The hashbrowns were a nice balance between crispy and soft and the steak has a crispy batter and good seasoning. The malt was creamy and delicious. I ordered a kid size and it was also a generous portion, so kids would love that. The glass it came in was cute. Overall, food and service was great.

A good place to dine on the way back to CA from Crater Lake. Woke up in the morning to start our journey home. What’s a road trip without local food, so quickly Unilocaled for the best place in town and went there. A beautiful old world setup awaited us. Loved all the classics that adorned the outside and the walls inside, even the restroom i say! We got a table next to the window overlooking a creek. It was so pleasant to see the creek and the greenery. There was a breakfast buffet but decided to go a la carte. Service is a bit slow but food was good especially the gravy. We all had sandwiches and omelette entrees. I wouldn’t say it was excellent but it sure was tasty and probably the best around. I don’t mind visiting the next time too when I go to Crater Lake

Walked in and seated ourselves at a «window» table with stunning views of the rolling Rogue River. So 5 stars for the view.
Moving on, waters were brought out promptly with no greeting or dialogue from the waitress. She seemed unhappy to be there.
After the order was placed our food was brought out in a timely manner.
Now the food… Eggs were runny and almost raw. Corn beef and hash was made with frozen potatoes and tasted like salt. French toast lacked any taste and the pancakes were average.
The bacon was great and tasted like real thick smoked bacon but that was the only plus.
I will not go back for breakfast. I will keep an open mind and try there dinner in future.
My recommendation for the restaurant is give your staff a lesson in customer service and add another seasoning to your food other then salt.

Heading south after visiting Crater Lake, the hubby and I stopped at this super cute and quaint diner. It’s decked out with rock and roll memorabilia and sits next to the Rogue River. Hubby ordered the San Francisco Burger and I had the Bif Burger with cheese. Their Magic Dust is pretty good — we mixed it in our ketchup and ate it with fries! Service was pretty quick and the servers were friendly. Was nice eating dinner with a river view. Would definitely come back!

I arrived around 730 on a Friday night and ordered the Prime Rib. The server told me it was the last one. I ordered medium rare, but it came out more medium well. The truly bad part of the meal was the service. The server took my order, served me my food and never came back. I even had to go up to pay without my check. She saw me at the register and when I told her of her «great service» she lied and said she wasn’t my server and she came to my table twice. Such lies. I have not been back since they moved to this location because of poor service at previous location. Think I have given this place all the chances it deserves.

Has the original Bel Dis dressing! Amazing! Also delicious gluten free buns! Cute place! Good burgers! Great view! Friendly staff! Would recommend for a casual fun meal!

UPDATE: In fairness to potential customers, I had to update my review of Mac’s and downgrade to a 3 star — solely based on the server staff. Kristi is the early waitress on Sunday mornings and that’s when I typically go there. She is great and enhances my experience enough to warrant the original 4 star rating. Kristi always has a smile, is constantly checking your coffee and water and enjoys interacting with customers. However, virtually every time I go there and get someone other than Kristi (with one exception), the service is minimal and the staff has virtually no personality. My most recent experience is a great example. I went to Mac’s around 7:45 am on a weekday and I don’t recall the waitress saying a word to me the entire time I was there. She forgot my side of bacon (there were two other tables with customers at the time so it certainly wasn’t busy) and I couldn’t drag a smile out of her. As I was leaving, one of their regulars came in and was greeted by a big smile and warm conversation by the same waitress who barely spoke to me. The food is good (breakfast — I don’t know about lunch or dinner) but eating out is about more than the food. My suggestion to management is to learn from Kristi and let her train your staff how to make customers (regulars and occasional) feel wanted and appreciated. You will be amazed what it will do for your business.
ORIGINAL REVIEW: Mac’s is everything a diner should be (and more). Great breakfast, friendly service and incredible scenery right on the Rogue River. This is my go-​to breakfast spot and well worth the drive to Shady Cove. Prices are very reasonable, service is great and the food is excellent. (How many breakfast places allow you to sub tater tots for hash browns?) I go at least once a week and I have never been disappointed. Highly recommended.

I came here with my boyfriend and a few members of our family on Sunday, November 15^th, 2015. We were greeted at the door by a really friendly lady! Then seated. Our waitress came over to greet us and she was neither friendly or rude, just seemed unhappy to be there.
We ordered the biscuits and gravy and the brioche French toast. Both were absolutely amazing! So good. Five stars for the food. One problem, I found 2 short black curly hairs on my biscuits and gravy. I ignored the first one, and then the second one was too much for me to keep eating. I hate complaining, I hate sending food back. But that’s gross, right? I had eaten 1 of 4 biscuits and half the hash browns.
My boyfriend politely let our waitress know, «hey we actually found 2 hairs in the gravy. I’m really sorry, I hate sending food back» her response was, «OK, did you leave the hairs on the plate?». No, I didn’t. It was like she didn’t believe me. She was really unapologetic and rude. She took the plate.
When the bill came, she had comped half of the meal. Which is better than nothing but I found that appalling. You serve me food with hair in it, you’re rude about it when we politely let you know, and then you still make us pay for ½ a meal when we didn’t even eat half of it?
I spent 7 years waiting tables. Never had a manager comp ½ a meal for food served with hair in it. Of course that would be taken off the bill. This was our favorite restaurant in the sweet town of Shady Cove. Won’t be coming here for a long time if ever again, Phil’s Frosty is wonderful!

There are very few places to eat in this sleepy little town. But whether you’re in New York City or in Shadycove Mac’s diner is an excellent experience in dining. The salads are delicious and the main courses are large and overwhelming. Don’t leave without getting a chocolate malt. It will take you back to the days of yesteryear!

The stars are strictly only for the ridiculous kitchy décor. When you first walk in the front part of the restaurant smells like an ashtray. The service is suuuuper slow. It’s almost like they don’t want you to come back? Also special ordering something is probably not a good idea. I asked for a burger without the mayo and they had to remake my burger because they forgot. I understand, but the quality of my burger made it seem like to me the cook was irritated he had to remake it. It was just thrown together. The food was ok, just typical diner food. The décor is cute and if they actually tried with the food and service I would want to go back.

Atmosphere is nice and staff is friendly. Unfortunately the food is over priced and bland. Burgers are overcooked and the Angus beef is a frozen patty. However, you do get unlimited fries and the milk shakes are great.

This has really great food for a local small town diner. Since I live in the area, I’ve came down for lunch and dinner. The staff are friendly and the views of the river are beautiful. I’d recommend watching out eating on the back deck if you get a sugary drink. The honey bees seemed to bother some people if they stopped in and sipped off a glass.

Pam is a great server however everyone seems friendly. Great views of the Rogue River. Food is fantastic. Will come back.

Having settled into our Royal Coachman Motel, we asked where to go for dinner. The receptionist recommended Mac’s Diner right next door, because, she said, the food was decent and the view gorgeous. She was right.
We were lucky enough to obtain a real, diner-​like, aquablue colored, old Americana type bench seats by the window with a view of the Rogue River gently flowing by. I ordered the Fish and Chips as did my Dutch girlfriend, and her daughter ordered the corndog which arrived in a paper Elvis Special 1950s car. My girlfriend splurged and got the Pale Ale; I, in turn, spoiled myself with a malt chocolate shake. Both were good. The french fries were nice and crunchy, the fish could have consisted of a little thicker patties and the fish breading was okay. The cole slaw was fresh but ‘boring’ and I cannot tell you why exactly. I think I missed pepper.
And then to try to explain the ambiance… We actually, believe it or not, saw otters playing on the other side of the river, several, all during dinner! It made it super fun. The décor with all the Elvis accents and fifties feel was unbelievably interesting as my pictures show, and other reviews explain.

Set the seen, I usually eat with 1 – 3 picky girls who like their food a certain way and won’t deviate from their typical way of eating… Its very rare that we make it through a meal at a restaurant where everything has gone according to plan and everyone is happy at the end of the meal… Today was one of those rare occasions… Don’t get me wrong, there were a few minor hick-​ups with the service, but the meal itself was 98% complain free (2% goes to a little too much salt on our youngest girls chicken strips, and after tasting them she was right, just a little bit too salty)… My meal was a typical diner breakfast, cinnamon swirl french toast (that tasted far better than it looked in the picture I posted) with bacon and scrambled eggs… The bacon was semi-​thick and cooked well, and the eggs weren’t rubbery like you some times get at diners… The staff was very nice, and the hick-​ups we’ll chalk it up to a busy Saturday morning rush… Prices were decent and we left full! The place is tucked back a little ways from the street, so don’t miss it! Once inside it overlooks the river… The décor was clean, a little whacky, but full of that 50’s memorabilia and good vibrations… This place is a great spot to hit before hitting the lakes!

My family and I have gone to Mac’s Diner since I was a child. They semi recently took over the old location of Bel Dis (Higher end restaurant) and added all of their 50 – 60’s flare. A superior spot for any good restaurant to succeed. Nestled off of the main road sitting back in the trees on the Mighty Rogue River, this is a great place to get an average priced, average meal and see some cool old décor.
I find it slightly awkward that the entry way and bar are still dressed with the Bel Dis décor but once you enter the dining room, you know you’re in the right place. options to sit inside, and a few small tables out on the deck to look at the river.
Food and service are decent, but nothing overly impressive. Some of my family members eat there every week and they absolutely love it. I eat there once in a while. The burgers are very good, sandwiches (other than the prime rib sub that I got, which was extremely dry) are good. They have a big enough menu so that there is something for anyone. I wish their fish and chips didn’t seem like frozen fish sticks, but the flavor is decent. The onion rings are great!
This is a good place for kids and medium sized parties, depending on space. I would definitely call ahead and speak to someone before showing up with 10+ people. They have been known to get very busy, especially during summer when Shady Cove turns into a touristy rafting, fishing, hot-​rod destination.
All in all… they managed to get an extremely nice location, but it could do without the very fancy left overs from Bel Dis… as much as I hate to see it go. A lot of good memories at this location, now Sharing that with my child. She says they have some excellent milkshakes!

My family and I thought this restaurant was a great find! We enjoyed our breakfast, while overlooking the beautiful river! Will come back!

Great diner with excellent service with beautiful views of the rogue river. The onion rings are so good! Great burgers and Talapia dinner. Everything is fresh and made from scratch. Decent prices, easy parking and Pleasant atmosphere Can’t wait to go back for breakfast.

Very neat place in little Shady Cove Oregon. The view along the river is nice. The restaurant is very unique when you walk up to it looks like a large house. you walk to the front door into a living area and through that. Then it goes out to the dining area which is done up in old fifties style. The food was really good I had a chili omelet and the chili was homemade and delicious. The only complaint I have is it seems like a family run restaurant and they had their two teenage children working who did not seem happy to be there. The atmosphere would have been much nicer without the bratty children. I would say if you’re in the area it’s definitely a great place to stop in.

This small restaurant designed to celebrate the diners and culture of the mid 20^th Century, is already looking a little 20^th Century with the ripped seams of the counter chairs and other wear and tear.
The food, though, is good. I had the hamburger with cheese, ortega chills with tomato, onion, pickle slices and lettuce on the side. It was above average. The cream potato soup full of small chunks of potato, carrot and celery bits for color and tiny pieces of ham for flavor was good.
