used to look forward to trips to andersen’s as a kid. still has kitschy old school family restaurant vibe but way less personal. soup is too salty. lackluster service.

This is NOT Pea Soup!!! I called and they told me it was the same, just a different name. Nothing is the same. Took one look at the menu and knew right away. I feel fooled. Ordered coffee and took off.

Not Split Pea Anderson’s anymore, which is totally disappointing. Walked in all I saw was the bar, not my style when I want dinner. But was seated at a table. It was 5:30 and apparently the main dinning room wasn’t open yet. Ordered the chicken artichoke dinner, was asked if I wanted soup or salad. I asked if the split pea was as good a the original split pea Anderson’s, to which she answered it’s their own version. I got the tortilla soup, wrong choice. Oil heartburn in a bowl is a better title, which arrived at the same time as my main dish. Luckily, the chicken was amazing! So was the bread, couldn’t tell ya what kind it was, maybe a sweet sourdough… Now that’s an oxymoron! Service was great, left a nice tip. Just beware of the tortilla soup(saw more than just mine go back).

This review is for the Spike & Rail in Selma. Came here for an early lunch with a friend. It was about 11 am on a Sunday. It should have tipped us off that most decent restaurants are crowded from after-church diners, and this place was nearly empty. Just two other tables occupied. We were hoping for something quick so we ordered two split pea soups in bread bowls. I have no idea how soup could take 20 – 25 minutes to set up but that’s how long we waited. Maybe they were splitting the peas by hand like the guys on the can. I was pretty close to walking out when a waiter told us just a few minutes more, and they arrived when he said. Pea soup was meh. A little onion & carrot, smelled like ham but no actual ham was found. Nothing bad, just not at all special or interesting. On the upside the bread was fresh and soft. After the food came nobody came by to check on us or refill glasses, and I had to go up to the counter to get someone to get our check(which took another 5 minutes) and pay(another couple minutes for someone to come to the register. Avoid, avoid, avoid.

Called Spike n Rail Steakhouse, a former Pea Soup Andersen’s location. The pea soup served here is good, a little more chunky than Pea Soup’s. If you have never had PSA soup, try it out, however this place has its own version of pea soup which was quite good and much like homemade. Skip the spicy beef soup though, I was given a sample. nothing to brag about.

Food was good, service was friendly and fast, and I really enjoyed the Danish culture setting. Would definitely recommend their Danish sausage sandwich and the honey candy sold by the counter

My husband and I came from hanford to eat here today. We were seated at the bar and a blonde bartender or server walked by us a few times and never acknowledged us!!! She could have just said will be right with you or something. Nope. Not one smile or word then a smaller woman with dark hair also passes us saying nothing!!! We sat at the bar for 20 min with not drink or anyone helping us!!! Sad because we really enjoy the food but will not be going back!!! We walked out and went to Sals. Also missed out on a big tip!!!

I had to ask to be seated, hostess that finally seated me tossed the menu onto the table and said, «there» then turned around and walked off. I had to wait all most 5 min for the waitress to appear and take my drink and appetizer order. It took another 5 min for me to get my drink. When I got my appetizer it was warm, like it had been sitting under a heat lamp.(mozzarella sticks). Not the best I have ever had. I had to call the waitress to tell her I was ready to order. My turkey sandwich on croissant consisted. of a stale dry croissant, Oscar Meyer turkey slices, tomato and avacado and lettuce. There was an additional charge for the luke warm sweet potato fries. Waitress did keep my diet soda glass full. I planned to order a dessert but the waitress brought me my bill and told me she would be my cashier. Needless to say I was really disappointed. I doubt I will make the 30 mile drive to come here again. Spike and Rails definitely does not live up to the standards of Pea Soup Anderson, in both service and quality of food.

This place is a classic road trip stop off for my family. Whenever traveling throughout California we would always seem to migrate to a Pea Soup Andersons and even frequented the hotel facility as well. Although I have only visited this location a few times I was impressed that it has stood up to the high standards of the chain. The pea soup is still a classic, with some french bread and all the various add on’s that are bad for the belly, but good for the soul. Although I have seen a gradual downturn in the the pea soup experience, I attribute it more to the further sophistication of my palate vs. any degradation of their cooking abilities. I considered 3 stars, but due to the fact that they have a long history of consistent quality I will go with 4 stars. Yumm

It’s actually called Spike n Rail Steakhouse now, which is funny because the street is still called Pea Soup Andersen’s and the billboard says, «Still serving great pea soup!» We were looking for a nice restaurant to eat around here for my significant other’s birthday, without having to drive all the way to Fresno. My best friend said she used to love eating here and they had the best pea soup, and my partner wanted a nice big steak. Being that it was a Saturday, and we had a large group, we called ahead to make reservations at 8. When we arrived, we realized the restaurant was in a hotel. Not what we were expecting, but OK. We walked into the restuarant and… nothing. It was 8:00 on a Saturday night and the place was deserted. There was no one in there, and this was supposed to be a good place! We were seated at a long table, and realized just how close we were to the bar every time the blender was fired up – it sounded like a jetliner taking off right over us! The place seemed very old and not too updated, and the menus were the same way. The bar drinks were fine. Being that it was a steakhouse I was pleased to see that there was at least one veggie thing I could order, a portobello mushroom sandwich. It was OK, very soggy, and I didn’t finish it. My friends determined the pea soup was disappointing, not like it used to be, and tasted canned. The best thing on the menu were the sweet potato fries, and they were the only thing we really enjoyed, but unfortunately they were served cold. They would have been good if they were hot. Anyway, overall the experience was disappointing and we won’t be going back. Next time we’re looking for a nice place, we’ll just make the drive to Fresno! The 20 minute drive is worth it.

Everything here tasted like it was old. The bread was dry and my steak was thin. Cost cutting measures when a restaurant isn’t making it. I’m sure it was betters when it was pea soup anderson. I am not impressed, I’ve been wanting to come here for a long time but sad that it was a let down.

This is my first ever Unilocal review so I wanted it to be genuine. What could be a better genuine review than something that I have grown to love and can’t miss each time I am in my car between LA and SF? Its Andersen’s Pea Soup. Its just so good and a reasonable price for something that is also so good for you. On my way up to see my Mom I bought several cans of soup and we have had it for lunch each day for 3 days in a row. Never not perfect! I am now partial to the bacon laced pea soup. I also bought one of those party cheese crocks for my sister as a goofy house gift. It was also yummy and just perfect for what it is — a fun party snack that seems to be a crowd pleaser. **** Now several months later I add: Just had a bowl of the canned soup for lunch after saving it for months. It was soooo yummy. :)

Nothing brightens the drive more than reaching the half way point and taking a split pea soup break at this place. It’s become a staple whenever we travel this route now. The interior cracks me up everytime, kinda brew pup with the lady’s wearing dirndl(?) Yup, it’s more Oktoberfest than the Oktoberfest. Considering that the drive this stretch of highway is probably the dullest drive I’ve ever done in my life, this place is a gem in the middle of nowhere. Good food and not too expensive.

Ok, everybody, THIS particular restaurant is in SELMA, about 20 miles SOUTH of Fresno. Many of you are thinking about the one in Santa Nella, on I5. The Selma stop is on Hwy 99. I don’t even know if it’s still Anderson’s but rather some other business now.

Dude, there were signs for this place 150 miles away on the way up from SoCal. How could we not stop and check it out? I didn’t know a pea soup serving could be made so elaborate with all the fixin’s… yeah. Who knew everything that went with a baked potato goes just as perfectly with pea soup? Before the restaurant entrance there is a mini mart of locally made goods like cheeses and wines but also some cheesy knickknacks… there was a discount bin/rack of(gasp!) audio cassette tapes of all our favorite hair bands and easy listening compilations. Don’t bother with the bar even if they give you that free cocktail coupon with dinner… there was only one elderly person at the bar who we at first suspected to be the bartender, but after waiting almost 5 minutes with no service, concluded he had just fallen asleep with his eyes half open.
