Billy’s Subs & Pizzas

Billy’s is our go-​to place when we get down to the beach late in the evening and don’t feel like eating out (nearly every trip). It’s around the corner from our beach house so they deliver and in very good time. The glowing neon soft serve ice cream cone on their roof is the welcoming last landmark to tell us we’re just about «home» after the long drive. It’s a small, quiet little roadside shack about a mile up 54 off of Coastal Highway. There’s a nice little wooden deck out front if you don’t mind sitting next to Route 54.
I can’t *rave* about them the way I’d like to. I’m into little ma & pa sub joints like this but there’s some taste inconsistency here. Most of the time it’s solid, standard issue sub/​pizza shop fare. Most of the subs I’d rate three stars. The cheeseburger, steak and Italian subs are on the weak to average side. They’re *real* sub shop subs– it’s not like they’re *Subway* but nothing spectacular. I’m sorry, but no self-​respecting sub shop should be using «Steak-​umms.» The pizzas can go either way. We’ve had *meh* to quite unique– such as their BBQ chicken pizza. The white pizza is usually quite good. The sides– fries, mozzarella sticks, onion rings, etc. are also fairly standard. The bottom line is, we’re just *satisfied* with our orders, and not even every time.
This is my first review that’s actually a little heartbreaking to write. Billy’s is like an old friend who’s always there for us. The service is good, the food is decent and the owner very often even delivers himself. I’d love the ability to give them three and a half stars but I can’t in good conscience reach for that fourth. We order from them and will continue to but it’s because they’re close, reliable and on the cheaper side. I wouldn’t go out of my way for the food. I’d still recommend them to most people with these caveats. In all likelihood, you’ll be satisfied and it won’t cost you an arm and leg.
Billy– kick that grub up one more little notch– I’d love to come back and give you another star or two!
