Ice skating at the Winterfest Ice Rink has become a family tradition for us. We’ve been going as long as I can remember at least once a season, sometimes more. Located in Fischer Pavilion at Seattle Center, it’s free to watch and costs per adult and per child, which covers the cost of the skate rental. Skate as long as you want, grab a bite to eat from the concession stand, and watch others have a great time. The ice is not what you would find at an ice rink. It is very beat up from the amount of people that skate on it each day. They don’t have a real zamboni to deal with the ice but have what I call a manboni — a man who pushes a large tank of water that drips out and is smoothed on the other end. These short intermissions allow you to catch your breath after chasing your kids around to ensure their safety. For younger tots, there are walkers which honestly, can be more dangerous than not but it’s your call. Also, some people can be speeding around on the ice along with people hugging the walls. It’s a fun time because everyone is welcome and everyone seems like they’re having a good time. Snag yourself a table or seat for your stuff or carry it with you. Finding a good spot to take photos can be a challenge with so many moving targets. I don’t recommend the concession stand but in a pinch, it will do. They have coffee, hot chocolate, tea, popcorn, pretzels, hot dogs and the like. The star of the show are the Ceres nuts they carry. I typically eat at the Armory or elsewhere when I come to this event. However, be aware that the Armory is closed for certain holidays, like New Year’s Day and plan accordingly.

Holiday fun for the kids. The rink is small but the skate rental is quick and easy. Bring cash, no credit card sales.
