University Lutheran Church

This is my home church so the review will obviously reflect that fact. I was noticing though that there wasn’t a review on Unilocal and there really needed to be. I’ll do my best to explain what University Lutheran is all about so that you can decide whether or not you might fit into our faith community. We are a progressive Christian church. And while that means different things to different people, it means to me that we are looking to create community that reflects God’s desires for us. We look to address inequalities in society. We advocate for those who cannot advocate for themselves. We look to care for God’s creation. We are opening and affirming accepting of all God’s children. We are a multi-​generational church with established members who have been here for years, those attending the UW for graduate school, and families with children.
Our worship service reflects our Lutheran traditions. We are liturgical which means that our service follows the same format week to week. But that doesn’t mean that our worship service doesn’t change. Of course, as Lutherans we appreciate traditional music with the service led by organ and choir. But we also have services that use music from Latin American and music from churches in Africa. During the year, we will hold more contemporary services led by drum kit, piano, guitar and bass guitar. The one thing that will be consistent though is the call for us as Christians to live out in the world the faith that we have.
And we look to serve those in our community who need a bit of help. We host the Elizabeth Gregory Home day center for homeless women in our church. We are a place of shelter for eight homeless women each night with SHARE/​WHEEL. We work with other churches in the University District to help out at risk youth.
