History

Established in 1989.

This store was created to address the needs of seekers, thinkers, nature lovers, and beauties. Started by Julia Dobos then sold to Rachael Townsend, then 10 years ago sold to Linda Savage (Rachael’s Mother). We have been through 4 years of construction all around us. It has been very difficult but with the help of our loyal customer base we have remained open when many other businesses around us have closed. Capitol Hill needs an alternative store like ours. I bought THE VAJRA in 2000 from my daughter. She wanted to home scool her kids and I wanted to take a break from Nordstrom (Fine Jewelry). So 10 years later here I stay! I brought Tarot Card Reading to The Vajra and it has grown from one night a week to a daily schedule. I am also a Certified HypnoTherapist and specialze in Past Life Regression Therapy. These special sessions help unlock a persons past and understand patterns in their present life. Understanding brings relief and many have had the benefits that this new knowledge brings.

I have 2 long time employees, Nikki Ross and Sara Johnson. These wonderful girls bring special life to the store. They are know throughout the community and are as fun to talk to as to look at, Beauties, definitely.

I have university degrees in Education and FINE ART, so I teach everyday. Maybe it’s about past lives, tarot, incense, or how to make an alter. I am always in to Practical Art and that can be seen at THE VAJRA.

I just had my tarot cards read here for the first time a few weeks ago! I scheduled an appointment for a Wednesday afternoon reading with Melissa… SO GLAD I did!
Melissa was great at explaining how tarot cards work and while I was a bit skeptical going in, I knew within minutes that Melissa is «the real deal». She was able to bring up occurrences in my life and spoke about ways that I see the world and the ways I think internally that she couldn’t have possibly known!
And, she gave me a «prediction» for my love life that she said would happen very soon and so far it looks like what she told me is manifesting. I was very confused by what she told me (meaning I didn’t see how it could happen so soon) but I just went with it, and here I am and each day I keep realizing how closely what’s happening is aligning with what Melissa said!
It was a phenomenal experience that I would highly recommend to anyone. I was on the brink of tears the whole time (in a good way). Go see Melissa! And check out the amazing crystals and incense selections while you’re there too :-)

There were crystals, buddah styled goods, knicknacks and generally all of their merch are at a great price. The staff was friendly and it’s in a great location to the other shops and places to eat. Although the shop is small, I found a few items I really liked.

Best selection of oils, incense and crystals on the hill. Employees are always super helpful as well. This is definitely an excellent treat yo self destination. Some day I hope to take one of their work shops!

Super small shop tucked away on Broadway. Despite its size, the selection is pretty substantial. They have a great selection of incense, crystals, and miscellaneous Buddhist and Indian figures. They also have a decent selection of tarot decks, the majority of which are not as tacky as is reflective of the overall selection of tarot available today. The woman that I presume is the owner is very nice and knowledgeable, ready to help you with any questions. My one and only gripe with this shop is that I find the merchandise overwhelming overpriced. I paid around $ 18 for three packs of incense, 2 of which had 10 or 12 full-​size sticks and 1 that had 50 sticks about a third of the size. I thought that was a bit exorbitant as before I moved to Seattle, I was always able to buy 10 sticks for a dollar. If you know of any places like that, let me know, okay? I took a cursory glance at their Buddha figures as I like accumulating them, and found them to be extremely expensive. I picked up a medium sized one, experienced sticker shock, and then picked up a small, ~2 inch one that was priced at $ 14. Yikes. Their crystals seemed like the only reasonably priced thing in the store to me, but I don’t buy them so I’m not 100% certain. Other than their crazy prices, I like this store a lot and if you can afford to drop the $$, it’s worth checking out.

This shop has no competition!
The Vajra may look real puny but its full of «small indulgences!» Their incense selection will have you blissed out, as well as their jewelry selection, tarot card decks, books, and crystals. The shopkeepers are full of wisdom and absolutely gracious. They also have a small back room for readings. Annnnd on Mondays evening they do workshops in a nearby location. Great place and a must-​shop if you are in the area!

Very small shop, with a HUGE selection of incense. The incense smell is quite strong, so it may be difficult for those who are sensitive to strong scents.
They also carry jewelry, incense burners, and crystals.

One of my yoga teachers sent me here for their collection of incense. The Raj Laxmi incense is like burning a little stick of heaven!!! I went in for my nose and was delighted to find a handful of very cool gifts and also some lovely cards. The complimentary postcards are also a nice touch. I will be back as soon as I burn through my sticks of incense.

Excellent little shop with great staff! They carry (and are knowledgeable about) a huge range of stones, crystals, tarot, incense, etc…
It is a VERY small store. My 29″ wide wheelchair barely fits… but it DOES fit! Anyone in a chair will be assisted in a very first class manner!

I have only bought incense from them, but they are hands down my favorite place to get it. I love the selection and the staff is friendly, informative but not pushy. Not a big believer in tarot, but their products are excellent.

For someone who is very skeptical about superstition, supernatural belief, mysticism, et cetera… I really appreciated that my buddies recommended I come here for a tarot card reading. They had stopped in on a whim earlier in the week, and had their readings done by Rain. As soon as they were done, they rushed home and ranted for almost an hour how helpful, insightful, and beneficial their experience had been. Now, usually I’d be the first to cry «horse shit!» to something like this, but I had never spoken to a fortune teller before, and have a yen to try almost anything at least once.
I went to see Rain.
I was there early, but she saw me right away. Tucked away behind a curtain in the corner of the little shop, she sat me down and was very welcoming. I didn’t feel like I was being hoodwinked or patronized. Rain was actually legit, awesome to be around, and genuine. I wasn’t really lost or searching for some huge answer to life… But what concerns and things I had been pondering for a while, she directly addressed, and was incredibly spot on (uncanny, because I didn’t share enough information for her to know, but her insight and knowledge of these things was immediately profound). She has a gift. I don’t say that a lot. I’ve never said that about someone, probably. But, she is certainly able to look at a person’s life and choices objectively and give great advice.
After having gone here, I have to concur with my buddies – the experience was not only helpful, but truly inspiring. I have already recommended her to many of my friends. Especially the ones that need help with some kind of guidance, but pretty much anyone could benefit from this scenario, in my opinion.
Also, the woman working the shop, Nikki was very pleasant to work with on the phone and in person. I bet they have everything you need, in terms of incense and the like!

I came here for a reading. It was my first time. The fortune teller used kool Gypsy cards. She was very confident and answered any questions I had. I had a great reading and I’m looking forward to having the good «stuff» manifest ;) There were lots of interesting things to buy: incense, candles, bells, cards, etc. The cashier was very nice and helpful. I really liked this place :)

I love The Vajra! On my first visit to this little store I was searching for some special crystals; I met Nikki & she helped me choose several amazing crystals: a chunk of kyanite, a naturally occurring kyanite/​citrine/​quartz combo & a naturally occurring kyanite/​quartz combo. These have proven to be so powerful and life changing– thank you Nikki for your talent and intuition!
On my second visit, I met Sarah! She was so wonderful, answered all of questions and allowed me the time & space to, again, intuitively pick out several items (pendulum, cards & elephant candle holder) that have all impacted my life in huge ways.
I reconnected with lovely Nikki & met Melissa, a tarot reader, on my third visit.
Wonderful place, wonderful people. I feel right at home in this store, there is no pressure to buy, just a sweet willingness to connect.

I love this store! I wish I could make the scent this store emits be what my bathroom and apartment smells like. It’s small, but has a really great selection of incense and jewelry, and has a staff that really knows their products. I asked about a certain incense, and the lady gave me a schpiel about how 10% of the incense profits go back to the factory where the women make the jewelry, so that they can make a wage they can actually live on. Plus, she knew all about where the other incence came from and where else you could get it in the greater Seattle area without always having to make the drive to Capitol Hill.
It’s pretty in line with other prices (for incense, at least) I’ve been to.

I love this place although I don’t get here often. They have a ton on great smelling stuff like essential oils and incense. My favorite is the Sataya and this is the only place I can find the variety that I love so much. I also but my patchouli oil there. I’m not much for the tarot cards or other mystical stuff but if it’s your thing I guess this would be the place to go.

I went with my friend Dan so he could get some incense… and well, I ended up leaving with a couple of the Vajra brand to sample for myself. I picked up a Forest Mist and Tibetan Sandalwood… Very nice and clean! I’ll go back again, they have some really nice meditation/​room fountains too! Be sure to look up and down when in there, there are some really nice finds!

This is exactly the type of business I like to support — my neighborhood, small scale, offering something unique.
I went into the place to buy incense — they make it themselves. I walked out with three different kinds and a really cool holder. They have other kinds of spirituality related things here too, if you’re into that. I’m not, but for my money, it’s the best incense I’ve found, and since I walk by all the time, it’s now my favorite place to buy it.

It’s always nice to see inside a small store and see a smiling face. She wasn’t talkative that drives you right out, either. The scent of the incense just draws your curiosity followed by your body right in. There are so many electic items here. You can get your tarot cards read. There are buddhist relics, incense, candles, and beautiful blank inside flower cards. My friend ended up getting a few cards, and the prices are worth the unique finds.

I give it 5 stars because i went there on a mission for one thing and they had it! The Plum Essential Oil… Amazing! It smells so good i could eat myself.
This place was recommended to me by a friend because she was wearing the oil and I had to have it.
The girl working there (Nikki) was super sweet, and told me how cute my daughter is… major brownie points :) Well she is cute.
Anyways, it is small and great and if you need some yumminess in your life …
