This review is based on service only as unfortunately we were unable to taste the food because they didn’t bother to open the restaurant during advertised hours. So after making some diet changes which includes cutting dairy, wheat, corn and meat we decide to start exploring alternative food and deserts. We were excited to find a vegan bakery on Groupon and purchased the deal. We live in Woodinville and decide to drive to Capitol Hill with our daughter for her 16th birthday. Their website CLEARLY says open 10 – 6EVERYDAY. We park and walk to the bakery around 4 and guess what? It was closed no explanation. That was a lot of driving — not to mention paying to cross on the 520 bridge both ways — all for nothing. Kind of a crumby way to do business IMHO.

how is this place not famous already? Vegan soft serve and ice cream sandwiches from the owner of Plum! I tried samples of many goods and they were all great! The citrus scone and lavender cupcake were both good too, and ALLVEGAN! But really, the soft serve and sandwiches are things you just can’t get anywhere else in Seattle! I can’t wait til the summer when it makes more sense to be getting ice cream!

Sugar Plum is a vegan bakery/sweets shop owned by the same owner as Plum Bistro. It’s located on 15th and a little difficult to notice because there are just no obvious signs for the store at all(but it’s at the exact same spot where Plum Vegan Café used to be). Sugar Plum is relatively small, and with pretty limited selection of bakery, just a counter or two of bakery goods(a few pieces each of brownies, muffins, tarts, etc), soft-served ice cream station and ice cream cooler. There is no place to sit, so you have to take your items to go. They also have just a few vegan sandwiches for those looking for something slightly heavier to eat. I am not a vegan, but rather a food enthusiast(who isn’t?) who likes trying new things. I opted for their fresh fruit custard tart and a banana chocolate chip muffin($ 7 total, excluding tips). Although the lil pieces of fruits on it looked slightly wilted, the tart was moist and tasted really good! I actually had no idea that it was vegan at all… they tasted light and not overly sweet. The muffin was a tad too dry and tasted just like a muffin I can have elsewhere. I wouldn’t mind going back for the tart again though: D~ A few things that I wish they have: 1) more selection. I stumbled a bit figuring out what I wanted to try, as they only have a few items of each and maybe less than 10 items to choose. 2) I wish they bake their goods on site so I can feel they are sort of fresh(they actually baked them elsewhere and just bring some items to showcase at the café and save some for the Bistro) and 3) maybe use more thoughtful/economical packaging? I only got 2 things, but they put a muffin and a tart, each separately in its own plastic tub container(the type you get when you get your small eggdrop soup to go at a chinese restaurant). On top of it, they put those 2 tub containers in a nice paper bag for me to take home. Call me OCD, it’s a nice gesture, but I think their current packaging for something as simple as bakery is unnecessary and overdone here. A simple muffin in a paper envelope/bag or a tart in a small paper box would save themselves money on packaging and would have been fine for their customers.

Life can be hard when you love dessert as much as I do, but dairy just isn’t your friend. Enter Sugar Plum, a new all-vegan dessert spot on 15th in Capitol Hill! Good for vegans, gluten intolerant folks, and dessert lovers alike. For ice cream they have vegan soft serve and a whole bunch of scoopable Coconut Bliss, with more options to come. I tried the chocolate soft-serve in a cone and was not at all disappointed. Then there are a ton of baked goods like brownies, cookies, and cupcakes. My friend got the s’mores brownie, which was not only vegan but also gluten free. She described it as cakey and said it would probably be even better warmed up. I also sampled the carrot cake cookie I got for my partner, and it was fresh and light. I definitely could have eaten the whole thing myself so it’s good I gave it away. It didn’t hurt that Makini Howell(the chef behind all of the Plum deliciousness) was there and I got to meet her. She is delightful. I love supporting good food, with good ethics, made by delightful people. I can’t wait to go back and try some other treats :)

There’s wholefoods that has 3 types of vegan cake. Although not quite open 100%, I already tried their chocolate cheese cake from Plum. It’s like heaven in a slice. Can’t wait to try the rest of their sweet surprises!
