«Forget the Space Needle,» the New York Times wrote, «This provides the best views of the city’s skyline.»

Once the 4th tallest building in the world, the historic Smith Tower has offered Seattle’s best views since 1914. Ride the original brass and copper Otis elevators to the 35th floor and enjoy the crown jewel Chinese Room and open-air Observation Deck. Views of downtown, Elliott Bay, all the mountain ranges, and Mt Rainier.

The Chinese Room in resplendent with hand-carved ceiling and furniture, gifts from the Last Empress of China, along with 17th century Chinese art panels, 16th century temple doors, and the famed «Wishing Chair» which portends marriage within one year to any unwed woman sincerely desiring marriage who sits here.

History

Established in 1914.

Of Smith & Corona fame, L C Smith of Syracuse, New York, was the manufacturing tycoon who put Seattle on the map with his — then — 4th tallest building in the world. Smith died before the building was finished, however, his Son oversaw the completion of the building, placing his Father’s initials in countless places throughout the building, so everyone would know it was his Father’s building, and not his.
