Shane & co have done two projects for us now: fixing a deck that started leaking into our downstairs, and replacing our siding. In both cases his crew uncovered and also fixed shortcuts the builders had taken on our house – no flashing under the join in the deck, and NO ENVELOPE under the siding, which meant they had to install one of *those*, which meant pulling out and reinstalling all our windows right at the end of construction season. They did a great job on a project that turned out to be considerably bigger than the scope of what they normally do and added value to our house by fixing some stuff that was definitely not up to code. One of these days we’ll get around to replacing our fence and we’re definitely calling them!

I needed to add a gate to my fence and a railing to a staircase in my backyard on a tight deadline and Shane delivered. Based on the positive reviews, I called Shane and despite him having an extremely busy schedule, he was able to fit my project in and get it done within a couple of days at a very reasonable price. He was extremely nice and helpful and I will be using him in the future for any projects that I need done.

Yep, Shane and crew are the real deal. Easy to deal with, good communication, quality work. Competitive pricing as well. I had DSS put in 120 feet of fencing with gates. On time, fence looks great. What’s not to love?

Shane did a beautiful job removing my old rotted deck boards and replacing them with cedar and fixing some other rotten spots. His crew was immaculate and every day cleaned everything up so as to not even know they were there. I will definately use him again and recommend him. he is a real nice guy to deal with.

Shane & his crew completed my fence quickly (done in 3 days) and it looks great! His prices are on par with other contractors, but the quality far exceeds what you typically find.

I was really pleased after using Shane and DSS Construction to do a potentially very expensive dry rot repair at my house. Shane showed up on time, got the job done quickly and used a creative solution for the repair so that the work fit into my budget. I’ll certainly use Shane again on my next project.

I can positively definitely say that Shane is an awesome person with a big heart, even if my landlord is proving to be a bit of a weiner head with only a big wallet.
I’ve been living for a whole month with a couple things not to code… things that were supposed to (and that I have his handwriting saying it was going to) be done before I moved in. I warned the landlord that having ¼″ and bigger cracks (mind you, we’re talking ¼−1/3″ by 2 – 3 feet tall) would become problematic soon enough as bugs were gonna invade… I spent the last week on steroids because a stupid bug, a spider from all I can tell (and from the dozens of them I have killed every day in this hot cold hot cold rain rain thing going on), crawled across my face, got smacked into my cheek by me, and somehow sorta just … well…
It turned the entire left side… and my chin… my temple… neck… ear… and part of my chest… alllll red, rashed, bumpy, itchy, and just plain painful. My eye all swollen, the works. A week after bringing this up, the contractor I was told was gonna be calling me PRONTO… STILL NO CALL?
Yeah, so after my CAT started tossing around a couple bugs, I was up to my eyes (literally) in arachnophobia I’ve never had in my life, not since I learned not to camp near certain kinds of leafy moist plants with lots of shade… so not knowing a thing about who to call since I’m not a homeowner anymore and basically was only making the call to exercise my legal right to live somewhere up to code, etc… I first called what IS a true handy man service that had a 5 star rating… got spun around in circles by some Service Magic voodoo, found out that handyman is in Pierce County and probably just a prop to get the Seattle Service Magicians more work… I wasn’t thrilled with the idea of them force feeding me contractors, so I Unilocaled, found Shane’s business under a «contractor» search, and left a message to the effect of «I don’t even know if I’m calling the right people, but this is what’s up…» and proceeded to mention the crumblings apart of windows and door frames of 80 years back. I also had a gas leak (nightmare when you’ve been poisoned in recent times by such a thing), so all day long… it’s been plumbers, gas people, and Shane. Shane… damnit, why is my landlord a dick?
Well, cause he’s a landlord? I dunno, but I wanted to hire Shane so much – he’s clearly able to do a lot of stuff with a little bit of money. To ME, $ 500 isn’t a fortune, not to fix a host of windows that won’t close, won’t open OR close, or don’t actually form any kind of barrier even WHEN closed… and to fix a ceiling problem, a serious door security issue, you get the gist. $ 500 is the minimum job he takes on, and frankly, MY LANDLORD OWES ME WAY MORE THAN THAT for me being the kindest southern belle for a MONTH of reminding him every few days that these things needed to get done. Yeah, having my face pull a Mel Gibson color shift from left to right side was that final trigger. Don’t tell me it’s okay to pay for what has to be weatherproof by law then expect any less than hell when it’s not and I lose a week of fun and function, too, scratching my face all night, trying to not scratch all day… sleepless…
Can someone do me a huge favor out there in the home owner or GOOD landlord world? Hire this guy. He’s obviously competent, has all his ducks in a row, and is clever. He knows materials and of … 7 total guys here, he was the ONLY one that was clean (and the Puget Gas guy I kinda «get» the grime of, but the others were just gross)… he was clean, kind, smart, and nice – he actually only really came out because he felt sorry for me, so if you can empathize at all with my freaked out face and my concern for my cat eating something poisonous, for me wanting desperately to go to Sasquatch instead of sitting here killing bugs or showing the minimum wage contractor how to put caulk where caulk goes, etc… then buy something like a house that distinctly lacks a fence, a deck, a something… and make sure Shane puts one up for you. You just gotta. For me. For the kids. Do it for the kitty cat that calls me slave, cause Shane is the ONLY one she didn’t actually panic – she stayed under the cover cause the doors were opening and stuff, but she didn’t squeeze between boxes and paintings and shiver for hours like the others made her do. She just hung out on the bed while he invaded her cat space.
He has good cat karma. HIRE HIM ALREADY.
I’m going to go write a letter of similar information to the homeowners I know and ask them what better time than the recession of our lives to, yknow, like, build onto your current home? (It actually IS what people are doing on the east coast – build up instead of buying up)… Seattle could stand to do the same thing, and they have JUST THE GUYS TO DO IT! CAT KARMA… you don’t get that by being a weiner head or even slightly incompetent in anything but maybe glittery makeup (z cat’s peeve).

When I came around the corner of my house there was a man standing in my flower bed. With big Man Feet. A teeny tiny bed with my teeny tiny little delicate cute sweet sunflower seedlings.
DSS construction is building a fence at the house next door.
I pointed out as calmly as I could that he was standing in a flower bed and on my sunflower seedlings.
He seemed so contrite, apologizing politely and even smoothing over the spot. I didn’t have the heart to be annoyed. They were, after all, tiny seedlings, only visible to a Mama’s eye. I got over it. End of story, right?
Well when I came home today there was a pot of flowers, yellow argyranthemum, on my porch, with a note attached that read: «sorry I stepped in your flower bed. These were the closest I could find to sunflowers.»
Are you KIDDING?
I thought people like that were extinct from the Earth since the 50’s!
Incidentally, the neighbor’s fence is looking great so far…
And my seedlings are recovering nicely as well.
Now I just have to find a place for my new plant…
