History

Established in 1933.

Since 1933, Seattle Metropolitan Credit Union has operated by the 7 Cooperative Principles to provide financial services to the employees and family members of the City of Seattle. Since then, we have expanded our charter to include anyone who lives or works in the state of Washington.

Seattle Metropolitan Credit Union is a not-for-profit financial cooperative. When individuals become members of a credit union, they become equal shareholders, each with one vote to elect their volunteer Board of Directors and Supervisory Committee. These volunteers oversee a professional management team and overall credit union operations.

Seattle Metropolitan’s existence reflects its members’ combined interests to continue operation for the benefit of the general membership in the local communities we serve. We provide a full spectrum of financial products and services, returning profit to our members in the form of lower loan rates and higher savings rates, low fees, and innovative products.

Meet the Business Owner

Richard R.

Business Owner

Richard Romero, who joined SMCU in early 2012, is just the fourth CEO in SMCU’s 80-year history. He has over 24 years of experience in the financial services industry, half of that time being spent with credit unions.

Richard on joining SMCU:

«I knew (SMCU) was the right place for me. My first impression of SMCU was that of a progressive credit union with deep roots in the community and a strong vision for the future. I saw a close relationship between the 7 Principles and my management style and beliefs. I’m a strong believer in the cooperative model and I wanted to make sure I would land somewhere that shared the same philosophies.»
