Safeway

This Safeway is alright. It’s been here for as long as I can remember and it’s just fine. They have a gas station which is nice and a Starbucks.
The people at the deli are usually friendly.
There is no self check out option which can be annoying during the busy times. Sometimes the checkers are great and sometimes they are very very slow.
It’s a bit tricky to turn in and out of this parking lot unless you know ahead of time how to access the store.
I go here a few times a week as it’s along my regular route. No real complaints as I’m a regular customer! They’re a-​ok!

This Safeway is in the perfect location and has plenty of parking. The real problem – and this is a problem – is that there is no self-​checkout here, which is inexcusable. Huge lines, like two of them, for 20 customers standing there, waiting with only a few items. I only stopped by here recently to avoid going off the mainline and spending even more time in traffic.
Southbound on 15^th Ave. NW, you cannot turn into this store without going down a ridiculous quarter mile by 80^th street and hanging a U-​turn there, presumably because of all the left-​turners before who would get hit (actually) by northbound traffic in the first lane as the other cars trying to get into Safeway would turn left. Now they have 1,000 foot stretch from 85^th Street to 80^th where you can’t turn left, and this is just stupid.
Other than that, the store is well stocked, but understaffed. I cannot comprehend two checkers on a Friday evening for 50 or so customers – customers who will soon realize it’s better to go to Fred Meyer down the street on 1^st Ave. NW, that, if anything, is OVER-​staffed. They have like, 15 aisles, and at least 10 self-​checkout counters.
C’mon, Safeway, get with it. Install those self-​checkout counters. There is plenty of room on the north end for that by the deli.
So, I don’t come here but once every — five years, because of that huge shortcoming. People don’t like to wait after a hard day at work standing in line like it was 1982 or something.

For the few staff that are actually in the store at any given time they are so poorly trained that there are huge health and safety issues.
Case in point. Went yesterday and decided to get a few slices of cheese from the deli. The woman proceeded to use the meat slicer, then placed the slices down on the tray with bit and pieces of other meat and cheese sitting on. When she placed it into the bag and handed it to me there were pieces of debris on the cheese. YUCK! She then moved on to the next customer. (Did I mention how understaffed they are?) So, I went to the customer service desk where I waited for 6 minutes until someone could help me. She was the desk manager. She listened to me, called the store manager to confirm that the process was not correct. Then she called the deli and had them re-​slice the cheese for me. This time, she did use a separate slicer but did not use a tissue or wrap of any sort to place it on. Hence, I accepted the cheese and promptly left it on the counter before leaving the store with nothing.
I have been in some really nice Safeway stores over the past few years. Too bad none of them are in Seattle.

The service at this place is terrible. Tonight they had one register open and 13 people waiting in line. its 10:30pm and the last thing I want to be doing on a saturday night is waiting in line at a safeway for almost 20 minutes. The thing is, this always happens. If it were the first time, I might have been more forgiving… but this is ridiculous

Sister lives in Silverton, Or. and she told us about the deli sandwiches they get at the Safeway there — sounded great. We went to this Safeway for a roast beef deli sandwich on whole wheat. There was hardly any meat, the bread was the cheapest «wheat» bread you can buy (the kind that comes in the long, skinny loaves for $ 1) and the bread was dry. Definitely the worst deli sandwich we’ve ever tried.

Worst Safeway ever! Customer service is non existent. If you have to ask 3 times if I want a bag and I say yes every time. That means I need a bag. For some reason the checker at Safeway was too preoccupied having a conversation with another checker about how customers look to notice I needed a bag. Pull your head out management! and get this place together. I will NEVER step foot in that place again. Gross!

It has now taken twice as long to check out than it did to find my groceries. If they can’t staff properly I will go elsewhere.

Beats the other safeway a mile down the road.

Some of the cashiers are nice, some of them will be rude right to your face. It’s right up the road from me so I shop here often.
The selection is alright, could be better.

Worst pharmacy ever. The lead pharmacist was incredibly rude and the staff were equally inadequate and have zero business working in customer service. Dealing with them was so bad that we switched pharmacies and completely stopped going to this Safeway. Never dealing with these people ever again

I have been going to this pharmacy for years and until now would have given it at least 4 star. This new manager is just not good fronting customers at all.
My husband went in to get a prescription for our son an easy inhaler. Our doctor must have prescribed for a mistake this ridiculous valved holding chamber with the inhaler which is probably good for babies. My husband noticed right away that this was something that we didn’t need and would not use at all. He told the manager that he didn’t need that thing and his response was oh yes he did because our son is so young — our son is 10 years old! And some other BS about the benefit using this chamber. My husband told him ok well I’ll take it, I can just return it later… silence… that’s the point the MANAGER didn’t tell him that there was no way he could return that thing. I tried to return it few hours later and the manager lied to my face about their interaction and told my it was our choice to pick up this prescription. He tried to brush me off, pretending to answer the phone and etc. This is a cheap plastic thing that cost over $ 50, almost more than the inhaler! I feel soo ripped off, because this thing is going into the trash. I told this guy that we would not be using this Safeway pharmacy anymore.
I have to say that I have never had any problems with the other staff and I’m sure they would have mentioned to my husband about their non refund policy, especially when he’s talking about returning it. They usually tell you more than you need to know when picking up prescription… this guy is not like the other staff in the pharmacy which are always polite, willing to help and LISTEN.

I’ve been coming here for years out of convenience, but I don’t know why I ever do anymore. I should just drive the extra few blocks to the Fred Meyer, where they always have enough checkers for large checkouts and I can self check my smaller ones.
So often when I come to the Safeway, they just don’t have enough staff on hand in the lines are ridiculous and the checkers frequently standoffish.
Prices are okay if you have a club card, but really there’s no reason to come here when the Holman QFC and the Fred Meyer on 85^th are both better options.

This store is terrible. Point-​blank. If not for the convenient location, I’m certain that it would have gone out of business long ago.
The produce is consistently awful, mushy, and past its pull date. I just bought a mango from here that looked fine on the outside, but when I cut it open it was sour and quite literally DEAD on the inside! I’ve never tasted a more yucky mango in my life! Grocery Outlet down the street has better produce.
Some of the staff are very nice, but many of the staff are incompetent, as though they didn’t have sufficient training. There are never, ever enough checkers. I’ve had to stand in line for over 10, even 20 minutes here. Restrooms are often visibly dirty and out of soap, paper towels, toilet paper, and toilet seat covers. Yes, the restrooms are consistently out of almost everything you would expect a restroom to have.
This place needs Jesus. It needs an inspection from the health department. It needs well-​trained staff and managers. I deeply pity the staff here who are fully aware of what a joke this store is but are unable to change it. Please, Safeway on 15^th & 85^th… it’s not too late. You can fire whoever has let this complete mess continue on for so long and send over the manager from the Greenwood & 87^th store. Now that is a fine Safeway!

Always understaffed at the checkstand. Lines are always 6 – 7 deep per checkstand, and that’s if any other checkstands are open. After the 2^nd time it happened, I just left my stuff in the cart and went home.
The worst part though is on more than one occasion I’ve gone in to the store to use the restroom after filling my car at the Safeway gas station and the men’s restroom — I swear it has never been cleaned. It’s more disgusting than any gas station bathroom I’ve been in. The manager should be ashamed.
I feel bad for those that work here, and worse for those where this is the only option to shop.

I’m not even going to mention why this is not a four or five-​star grocery store. Safeway = three stars. Ballard, Crown Hill, Capitol Hill, wherever … I’ve been to them all and they’re all understaffed, have below-​par meat and produce, and are as glum and windowless as off-​strip casinos.
Here is what IS different about this Safeway:
PROS
1. Gas prices usually the cheapest in town, barring Arco
2. Scandinavian flags give it that «we tried» feeling
3. You can usually park right outside the door
CONS
1. Going south on 15^th, you better take a left BEFORE the Safeway cause there’s no left turn to get into it after that
2. The customer service desk is not staffed by anyone ever
3. Within a 1-​minute drive of a far superior QFC and Fred Meyer. Heck even Grocery Outlet two blocks down is occasionally a better destination.

Staff is friendly and checkers do a good job but there’s never enough of them. Expect a wait.

I actually go out of my way to get to this Safeway because its the lesser of two evils. I like the fact that this one is larger than the one further south.
The deli section remains to be unimpressive. It is clear that Safeway does not value its deli section because the selection is lousy and there is never more than one person working the counter on the weekends.
Why does Safeway like it so dark in their stores? Maybe Whole Foods will lend them some of their lightbulbs. Lighten up the place already!
Darno (sp?) in the meat department is AWESOME. He has gone out of his way to accommodate special requests. Definitely an asset to the store.
But, please keep Erica (the checkout girl) off the intercom. She uses it way too much and its borderline obnoxious.
I love having a Starbucks in the store.

I’ve lived in this area and shopped regularly (at least once or twice a week) at the Safeway for over a year, so I think I’m a fair judge.
The pros: Cheap, good sales on certain products, especially on their $ 5 Fridays. usually pretty friendly service at the front.
Cons: horrible produce. The produce section almost looks and feels like an afterthought that was added last to the store, and there’s not much selection there. I’ve paid nearly $ 6 for organic cabbage that was already wilted and black in some areas. I’ve seen molded strawberries and tomatoes. overall, it’s not very fresh.
The WORST part is the deli. Really boring, empty looking meat display, really really poor selection, and worse customer service. There have been times that I am the only customer standing there and I still wait over a solid 5 — 6 minutes for someone to notice me. there’s no bell there, or something else to alert the employees in the back that someone up front needs help, so I usually have to flag them down or yell to the back of the deli. when they do come up, they always give me the feeling that they are in a huge hurry to get rid of me, even if they’re not very busy. it’s obvious that the back of the deli is more important to them than the way they treat their customers. I’ve also had them toss me a bag of meat that wasn’t even closed.
And if you’re more of an organic eater, don’t bother shopping here. there is no organic section, and what little organic food they have is severely overpriced (more than usual for organics) and hard to find.
I go here for the cheap sales and gas perks, but if I want fresher meat and produce and a great organic selection, I go to the Greenwood Fred Meyer a few blocks away.

Expect delays — there are NEVER enough registers open. Other than that it’s your average Safeway with your typical supermarket selection. No better or worse except you can’t ever get in and out in a hurry. EVER!
