Specialties

We specialize in both children’s books and espresso café. Additionally, we carry an assortment of books for young adult to adult readers. Our café is typically stocked with scones, cookies, cold beverages, and all the necessary ingredients for a good espresso.

History

Established in 2008.

On November 30th 2007, the now «Great Hall at Greenlake» building was purchased from the VFW in its intention to support a children’s bookstore and café as well as serve as community meeting space. Historically, the aged brick establishment was built in 1921 as a Congregational Church. The main floor which now houses the Mockingbird Books and Acstage CPA companies was once used as a nursery and space for sunday school classes. Today the space still serves the surrounding Greenlake neighborhood.

Mockingbird Books is an amazing bookstore, especially for children. The staff is super attentive and always helpful with recommendations. My son is just beginning to learn to read, and the two recommendations we have received thus far have left my son wanting more! We are so grateful that the team here at Mockingbird Books is helping our son develop a love for books!!! Thank you!

My son loves this place because of the train set. It’s great to have an indoor place to stop by for a few minutes. There’s never a bad day to pick-​up another book or puzzle for him. He tears through both. I just wish he wasn’t so annoying about asking for books.

I stopped in here about 2 weeks ago, and I’m glad I did. There is a great selection of books, and the staff member on duty, Emily, was extremely helpful in picking out an age-​appropriate book for my niece with beautiful artwork. She offered me several suggestions of her favorites, and then allowed me time to sit down and page through them before making my choice. She then even gift-​wrapped it for free. They also have a rewards program if you are a regular customer. Definitely support this family –owned and run bookstore.

Super friendly and knowledgable staff. I needed some new books for my daughter that were less princess focused and I walked out with 3 books that are now favorites of my daughter. Check out the Gruffalo, good stuff!
I went back a few weeks later to get some Christmas gifts, they are well stocked but I needed a couple that were not in yet. They were ordered for me and I got them as fast I would have through Amazon.

This is THE place to go if you want to talk with staff who knows books. The diverse selection they have has been integral in building my home library (for my toddlers) as well my classroom library (for my 1st graders).
The selection seems to always be added to, I always go in looking for a particular book and walk out with a stack. This is where I go to shop for books locally.

Sweet neighborhood bookstore that caters to children and young adults. They had a surprisingly good selection of young adult books, with the latest popular titles. They have storytime daily at 11am (except Sundays) and would be a perfect spot for parents to grab coffee (haven’t tried it yet) while letting their children listen and explore the shelves together. There’s a small shelf of books catering to adults, with mostly best sellers. Sweet spot and convenient location, but they didn’t really care we were even in the store.

What a wonderful bookstore! My boyfriend and I (both in our mid-​twenties) were taking a walk around the neighborhood when we came across this store. We both grew up going to bookstores like this one as children with our families, and stepping into the Mockingbird only brought back the very best of memories. You don’t see many independent bookstores anymore, so it was quite a treat for us to stumble across Mockingbird Books. If we had children (and in five or so years we probably will), this is a place where we would take our children on a weekly basis. We had the opportunity to chat with the owner of the store, who was absolutely delightful and very knowledgable about books, and clearly loves what she does. The store has an excellent selection of books, including many great classics that I read as a child. We (my boyfriend and I) couldn’t resist and bought a few books to take home with us.
We both highly recommend this place, and we look forward to our return visits! It will also be our go-​to place for buying presents for our friend’s kids.

Love this book store! They are always so helpful and if purchasing a gift they will wrap for free. If they don’t have a book you are looking for they will order it for you. I’ve done this several times and have been amazed at how quickly they get it in (within several days). I love to support local business and this is one that I really love!

We come here a lot, and my last review neglected to talk about the other cool things Mockingbird offers, which include free gift wrapping with the purchase of a book OR toy and varied book club and author events, which run the gamut from teen lit to local author and anything in between.
I always buy birthday gifts for children from Mockingbird.

I feel so lucky to live right around the corner from this bookstore!
I wandered in one day, looking for a birthday gift for a one year old. After browsing for a few minutes, without anyone looming over me, a nice woman asked me if I needed any help. I explained what I was looking for, and the woman was full of suggestions but didn’t push anything on me!
We got to talking about my job as a teacher and the types of books my students love to read. We discussed one of my favorite children’s authors, (Mo Williams) and she informed me about all his recent books. While I was looking through a few titles, she went into the back room. When she came back, she brought an autographed copy of one of his books, which was her personal copy. THEN SHE GAVE ME THE BOOK FOR MY CLASSROOM!!! Seriously… she GAVE me the book because she thought the kids would love to see his autograph! I couldn’t believe it. Such a selfless gesture to help children connect with great authors and books.
By the time I left the shop, I had my gift, a few books for my classroom, her personal autographed book, and a few free posters to put up in my room.
It’s places like this and people like her, that make me so happy I don’t shop at Barnes and Noble!

I think this store is a gem in our neighborhood. They host story time everyday for free, i take my son there every now and then and he just loves the place. They have a lot of kids books and they are knowledgeable in what they are selling. They tell you if this book is age appropriate for your child.
I just love this store.
Every parent should go there, its a really fun and cozy place.

This store is an absolute gem! The fam stopped in last night after dinner. The owner (maybe one of two?) is awesome– she listened to my brother describe a book he loved as a kid, but didn’t remember the name of, and based on his description of the illustrations knew exactly who he was talking about– and with a short internet search, found it. I’m a spaz and can’t remember the name of the book, but she did the exact same thing with some of my inquiries. Very passionate about kids books, and told us where we could go to order some harder to find items (University Bookstore). I wish I could come here for story time…

We really like this book store. My daughter likes the story time and then likes to play at the train table and chalk table they have available. The staff is always so friendly and helpful. It is also walking distance to Green Lake Park playground. **Make sure if you do park in the pay parking spots right out in front of the bookstore you place your pay sticker in your window and heed the parking time constraints. Every time we have visited the bookstore the «Parking police» has been checking parking stubs. There are places to park around the corner for free.

This is a wonderful bookstore! We hit up the 11am daily (except Sunday) children’s story hour at least once a week. What a fun FREE thing to with little ones. The reader is usually one of the owners, and they start out with books geared towards the youngest children, and move up to stuff for the older ones. Sometimes there’s singing, and puppets, even.
There’s a great play area, including a piano that the owner sometimes plays for the children after stories. And you can get your latte from the little Finch café.
If you need a baby shower or children’s birthday gift, nothing is better than some books. Come have the book lovers at Mockingbird help you pick out just the right thing.

Came to this bookstore today for story time at 11. They have story time at 11 daily except Sundays. So it’s great if you’re looking for something to do with your child. I took my 16 month old and she wasn’t into sitting down to listen to a story just yet. She wandered the store looking at all the books and they also have a train table and another table with puzzles. Their café seemed dead. They had a cold case with drinks and their baked goods case was empty. No one was eating or drinking there. Lots of selection for kids books!

This little bookstore fits right in for young, quaint, and cute aspiring readers.
It reminds me of my old hometown library as a kid. The old school style brick, piano by the window, story time brought all that cozy goodness back.
As I was on the hunt for some classic childhood novels I was lead through selections and brought many suggestions by friendly staff.
They really seem to edit their choices well. In other words: no manga comic novels, teen chick-​lit, or other softer forms of crappy written literature.
You can find a pretty good selection up to young adult here as well. Well worth the choice if your looking to give some unique children’s literature.

This is a wonderful childrens book store with all the perks: a staff who can make appropriate suggestions for your child, a play area to occupy your little ones while you browse, a small café, and story time every day at 11AM. Oh, and did I mention the books? I found all of my christmas presents in no time at all and had them wrapped before I left. They also have an incentive program — I left with a voucher I can use at my next visit. It’s ocated near Rositas at the north end of greenlake, I’ll be back!
