Metropolitan Market

I don’t shop at Met Mkt nearly as often as I used to. Why? I’m now retired and can’t afford their huge prices!!! I bought a head of cauliflower there recently, $ 8 !!! Say what? A small bag of green grapes, $ 6.50. I nearly choked in the check out line. But aside from what everybody knows about this store (way overpriced) I’ve noticed they have gotten sloppy with expiration dates. Lots of items on the shelves that are fast approaching their use by date. And while I understand that buying any fruit from any store is a crap shoot it seems to have gotten worse at MM. I bought a bunch of peaches during their Peach O’Rama event last summer and they were all rotten next to the pit. It’s too bad as they do carry some nice items that are hard to find elsewhere but from now on I’ll buy from Amazon.

Just had a delicious dinner that was also healthy and had lots of color and variety. This location is my favorite with lots of great produce, a poke bar and great bread. A bit pricey but worth it.

On any other day, I would give this market 5 stars. Great selections, samples, and deals. Prepared food is fine, but selecting and cooking your own choices is optimal. But I was miffed recently, as safety is a priority over commerce in my opinion. I was browsing in the seafood/​meat area when a large, thankfully empty box, fell on my head from overhead in what I guess is the office area. Another shopper asked if I was OK, yes I was (good I had a hat on), but the fellow above who dropped the box on me didn’t say a word until I warned him what happened. If the corner of the box hit me, maybe another ending, and I’m relatively fit. The topper was I told another employee about what happened, and my safety concern, but they seemed to busy with other things. Just beware shoppers. I realize most everyone is busy over this holiday season, but safety comes first.

Very clean and nice! I really like this grocery store. They have events from time to time like today was «Met Melt» where they are introducing a new item to the deli. You are able to sample all and vote for one of the 4 new grilled cheeses. They were all delicious, but I don’t expect anything less from Metro Market. They provide high quality groceries and have very pleasant staff.
The only qualm here is that they are busy and the parking lot gets crowded. I think it makes it feel hectic just to get in there. Otherwise, I think that going here is totally worth it!

I would like to update my review as the company has reached out to me to acknowledge the frustration of my last review. I do feel that one incident should not effect their entire store as they do have some sincerely knowledgeable people that work at this store and I have not seen the man that made the comment since it happened, as it happened back in May, (at least I don’t think I have). I will continue to shop at metro when I find myself needing good wine or seafood as they have righted the situation. I was more upset by not hearing an acknowledgement from the company and am glad they listen to their customers as seen from the customer service rep that emailed me.

So disappointed! My friend had been raving about the peaches so I tightened my belt and decided to splurge a little bit. From the get go, things felt off. No one smiled including the customers. I did get a smile out of the coffee guy when I responded to him and asked him how he was doing.
I got my peaches and some other things. Even though I’d prepared myself for higher prices I was still shocked. The final insult was during checkout when the clerk failed to even say «hi» and then asked me in a snotty voice if my peaches were organic. I didn’t know so she had to actually open the bag and look and that seemed to be a big deal. At 11:45 on a Friday morning. We’re not talking crazy busy here.
Just an overall disappointing experience. On the occasions I splurge on Nordstrom prices, I expect Nordstrom level service. It’s a beautiful store and I’m glad some people had great experiences there but I will probably take my money somewhere else.

Picked up an egg salad sandwich this morning only to find that whoever wrapped it
wore so much perfume that the whole sandwich smelled like it! Disgusting! Threw it out immediately. DON’T LET EMPLOYEES WHO HANDLE FOOD WEAR PERFUME! I am allergic to perfume, and you are lucky that I did not land in the hospital, as has happened before.

They have a poke bar here! They don’t have a great selection but they do have the classic spicy ahi poke. Compared to Hawaii’s poke I would give it two and a half stars but poke compared to other Seattle markets, I would give it four stars. Wish they had some salmon poke!

So much good and so much bad.
The good: The right side of the store (prepared food, deli, produce, cheese, seafood, poke bar, bakery, coffee, gelato, floral), so very tasty.
The okay: The left side of the store (standard grocery shelves, beverages, freezer section) is only okay. They’ll have some version of what you’re looking for, but it’s a smaller store and their ability to carry variety is meh. If you’re looking for anything inexpensive or a national brand, be prepared to search the bottom shelves.
The bad: The prices, oh the prices. This place makes Whole Foods look like Grocery Outlet. The product available is nice, well stocked, neat, tasty, but not inexpensive.
The customers: It’s a mix of hipsters who don’t want to drive all the way to PCC or Whole Foods for some weird brand of something they discovered before anyone else, well-​off retired people who live in Laurelhurst or View Ridge who have either forgotten that other grocery stores exist thanks to Alzheimers or don’t wish to mix with the poor people at Safeway, and the middle-​class locals who need a weird item or one thing and don’t want to fight with the traffic at Safeway.
The staff: Sooooooooooo sloooooowwwwwww. They have the slowest checkers I’ve ever seen. They poke along ringing up orders. I, deep down, believe this is to trick customers into thinking they bought more to justify the huge totals. My son believes they are typically grocery store employees and so likely baked, but older so the weed affects them more. The express lane is, well, express in the way that I-​405 is a ‘freeway’ on Thursday at 5:30 pm. They’re so very nice. Extremely polite. Always willing to answer a question or help you find an item, but just sooooooooo slowwwwwwwwwwwwwww.

High end grocery store with great selection but your wallet will feel it!
I only occasionally drop by met market if I need a specialty item or am too lazy to cook dinner and pick up something pre-​made. Their roasted chicken, mashed potatoes, meatballs and chicken pot pie are favorites in our home.
They also have a wonderful bakery and a really cute knick knack section if you’re in a crunch for a card and gift.

Yay for it’s freshness… and POKE!!! Anyone who loves fish def has to try it. It’s best to go early in the day as they run out fast but of course they do make more… I just don’t know when haha. And while you’re there, you have have have to pick up a giant cookie. Oh gosh, it’s amazeballs. Warm it up with a nice cup of milk, hot chocolate, or coffeeeeee :)

Our neighborhood market has so much to offer. Such good food, locally sourced and sustainable meats. It is expensive, though, so I do my regular shopping elsewhere. We love to walk here and eat a picnic in the park nearby on special days.

The cookie is so warm and gooey I can’t even begin to describe how good it was! So much chocolate the fresh hot food and salad bars were delicious as well! Great whole foods store!

«The Cookie» is out of control. When we came by Sunday morning, they had a fresh warm batch of these chocolate walnut cookies that are overloaded with chocolate and walnuts and oh-​so-​good. Their drip coffee is only ok, not very hot out of the carafe. Their entire selection seems smaller than the Queen Anne store (my favourite Met Market) but if I lived nearby I would definitely come here all the time.

Worst customer service I’ve ever experienced in a Metropolitan Market. When I got to the register the cashier was having a conversation with the bagger & I was NEVER greeted. She never said a word or even a «HELLO» and acted as if i was interrupting her (both ladies cashier & bagger) Will NEVER come back!!!
I’d rather shop at PCC down the street.

This place was really close to my apartment when I lived in Seattle and I preferred going here over QFC and battling U-​Village parking. However, I stopped going here when I realized how much more I was paying for groceries here as opposed to somewhere else like the Fred Meyer in Lake City or the Trader Joe’s on Roosevelt where I always spent $ 20 less.
They do have high quality foods and sometimes I would still go here if I just needed something that I forgot or I was being lazy or if one of their ads had a good deal on something I needed, but I definitely don’t recommend it for weekly shopping if you’re on a budget.
The people there are usually very nice and know what they’re talking about. They have a huge cheese selection, as well as some stuff that you can’t really find at other places.

I go here for the excellent selection of fruit and vegetables, for the locally produced goods and conversation with the very informed cheesemongers. The roomy store layout is logical and easy to navigate. I enjoy walking in past the flowers, stopping by to see what free samples are being offered in the hot deli area, the cheese zone and back in the fruit area– they like their free samples here!
It is not uncommon for me to pick up an already prepped side dish, like their delish lobster mac & cheese in a classic white ramequin. I stock pile the ramequins, then I buy myself something nice, guilt free, with the store credit for their return.

What can be said about the expanse of so many various foods at the edge of your fingertips and at all times of the day? Honestly, I don’t really come here to grocery shop because by the time I leave, I’ve eaten half the things in my bag.
1) Chocolate chip cookies – literally straight out of the oven, not sure if it always comes with walnuts but that’s the one I had. Plus they strategically place their dining area above the vent. Clever. It distracted me from my current meal at the time, which is below!
2) Prime rib sandwich – also extremely tender and delicious, with horseradish and a side of au jus. It was a pretty filling sandwich of commendable size.
3) Poke bar – this was definitely my highlight because it reminds me of home. There were basically only two kinds the day I went – spicy tuna and California roll poke. I wouldn’t say it was quality and hinted along the lines of using Noh’s Poke Mix, but it was nice to have access to such a rare find regardless.

*Luxury grocery. KInda like shopping at Nordstrom for food.
*I love their Poke bar but get there in the morning, by 5pm its not as good.
*There are deals here but you really have to look for them.
