In 1969 two Harborview doctors, Dr. Leonard Cobb and Dr. Michael Copass asked the question,“Can we affect the survivability of patients by bringing medical therapies to people on the streets via trained non-physician laymen?” And in the quest for the answer, the world’s first paramedics came to be. Partnering with the Seattle Fire Department because of their already established coverage of the city, and the firemen’s willingness to help those in need — Medic One’s first paramedic class went in service in the city of Seattle in March of 1970.
