Inn At Virginia Mason

This place is lovely. As soon as I walked into the lobby I felt a sense of warmth and welcome.
I was a little worried from some of the other reviews and I suppose you never know about a place until you enter your room but I was pleasantly surprised. My room was very clean (the bathroom spotless) and the concierge was so friendly and helpful. So now that I’ve stayed here myself, the recent one star reviews surprise me. Not sure if it’s just some rooms that are old and not updated? Mine was great.
I love that there’s a restaurant here, the wi-​fi is acceptable (though spotty on the 8^th floor where my room was… I just spent some time in the lobby). And though I didn’t eat at the restaurant, I could hear how wonderful the server was to the customers while I was sitting in the lobby. Kudos to this place for its great attitude.
I also checked out the rooftop patio. It could use a little ambience lighting at night! I’m sure not many people go up there, but it is scary dark at night… even some plain white christmas lights strung up would go a long way! Make it cute, guys! Why not?
Anyway, I would stay here again in a heartbeat. Thank you guys.

I gave it this many stars because it was better then I anticipated. The hotel was built in 1928. The interior is of a time gone by. The room was quaint, old, but clean. Think of an inexpensive European hotel, and you will be pleasantly surprised.

This hotel was beyond a total disappointment. In all my years of traveling, I have never experienced staying in such a dilapidated and filthy room, and the fact that it’s attached to a hospital makes that even worse. The staff was practically nonexistent, so there was no point in even trying to find someone to complain to (when we had gotten a hold of someone on the phone to ask for utensils, they said they’d be right up but never showed).
I found myself so disgusted with the state of the room and it’s filth/​mold that I took several photos to share with the booking website and the hotel as well. However, Unilocal is probably the best way to review anyways.
The room service was from the hospital. The Wi-​fi was terrible and worked less than 10% of our stay. There was no air in the room and the windows opened about 4 or 5 inches (made for a hot five days in Seattle with temps reaching mid 80’s).
Regarding the price, it was a good deal in comparison to other hotels closer to downtown. However, the walk is directly up steep hills (almost unbearable when carrying luggage in the heat) and the absolute FILTH proved that we would have been better off at a Motel 6. For that, I am marking this room as Pricey.

Our trip to Seattle, found us checking into the Inn at Virginia Mason. When we arrived there was no place near to park and check in, so we circled for awhile. After checking in, there was no one to help with the luggage and there are about 5 steps to climb from the street to get into the hotel. Now I understood why there was no place to park and check in. Once I delivered my luggage to the room. I went back down to park the car. They claim they have on site parking. NOT TRUE two of the closest parking lots were full. I ended up parking 4 blocks away at $ 24.00 per day.
The rooms were clean, but the twin beds are small. Staff was courteous, but limited on there help. We canceled our reservations for the balance of the week and rebooked at Holiday Inn Express. Night and day difference, we’re glad we did.

Great bargain choice in an over-​priced city. I saved 50% compared with other hotels duirng a recent stay. The hotel was a short walk through Freeway Park from the convention center. The corner room was spacious and clean. You could even open the windows. It is a historical gem. They have free coffee across the street at their sister property which also has a washer and dryer if you need to do laundry. You can eat at the hospital cafeteria next door. The nearby Corner Café has espresso drinks and food. The hotel is on a steep hill. It is closest to the University Sound Transit station. I would definitely stay here again.

A lot of charm and character as opposed to the sleek, chain hotels that I usually end up in. Nice change. All the furnishings seemed authentic and it was clean and well kept. Free coffee in the morning and a handy roof deck. Apparently there will soon be a restaurant downstairs too. Good location for easy waking to all Seattle’s main attractions.

Worst experience for a $ 200 per night stay. No AC, no fridge, no hair dryer. Only one ice machine at main lobby, bad internet. Bad bad bad, don’t stay here!

Avoid staying here at all costs… we were lied to 3 times and charged for a room we never stayed in. There is NO airconditioning in this HOTel regardless of what travel websites say about climate control or what employees tell you when you are booking. The staff here lied about airconditioning. They did let us check out once the gig was up. I requested early check in as we were staying there because my husband was having surgery. They would not give me that unless I paid for the prior night even tho we did not stay in the room. Once we arrived the following day at noon to discover the sweltering swindle, we requested our money back. A whole nights charge in order to get earlier check in was a rip off at best anyway and since we never used a room, I felt it was fair to request refund. The general manager refused to refund our money. Please let this review keep others from being swindled and rudely lied to. We went to a hotel down the street who graciously offered early check in, a wonderful airconditioned room and sincere care for my husband’s comfort before his surgery. It truly astounds me that a modern day business could have such poor business practices. I have Never written a negative review before but feel compelled to get the word out there so others will not be taken in!,

Sweltering and swindled

«Modern, clean, sleek» (eyes wide but glazed) Say it, «Modern clean sleek» (eyes rolling back in your head) «moderncleansleek» foaming at the mouth «MODERNCLEANSLEEK» (good thing the medical center is next door!)
You know you were an HGTV junkie at one point when you start reciting the mantra: We want something, you know…“modern, clean”(look around the room)… «sleek.» It’s an attractive design style, but there are others.
The Inn at Virginia Mason is not «modem» and «sleek» but it’s «clean» as in «tidy.»
Granted, you aren’t moving in here but I find that people tend to prefer accommodations that are familiar, especially when staying in a city and if you are mouthing those three words all the time, you will look at this place and snub your nose. And that’s fine, tons of «modern, clean, sleek» everywhere, but I love finding a little corner of something that is traditional and has the charisma that only an older building, preserved with some of the era-​features can offer.
Like:
— pedestal sink in bathroom and retro tile in the bath
— little hook latches on cabinet doors
— time-​period furniture complete with an alarm clock that ticks (bells on top) at the bedside
— glass doorknobs
But without sacrificing amenities:
— flat screen tv
— nice offering of bath products, surprisingly
— comfortable bed
And even GAINING amenities:
— OPEN fridge! (not jammed with what the hotel is hocking at at 250% mark up)
— microwave
— bedside swivel! task lighting plus plug-​in to lamp (I recently did some crawling around at a «modern, clean, sleek» property to switch the one lamp with a plug-​in to my bedside so I know about this)
Two disclosures: One, I was upgraded to a queen room (from two twins) (thank you very much) on the 7^th floor and Two, I lived in a building much like this in Chicago’s Gold Coast, once upon a time, and this little brand of «apartment» is still close to my heart. I see its beauty and I associate it with «city» as much as I do a more modern hotel/​apartment. I love the warmth and charm of a place like this as well as the people downstairs who make it feel like the doorman did in Chicago — like home! The gentlemen working here were very kind and hospitable.
Couple other items:
* no resto on site but who eats at hotel resto anyway?
* there are dining tables and a sunny patio and a grandfather clock down in the reception area
* there was, I swear a room service menu though, so call and ask if this is important to you
* I’ll call it a «clean» location also as in a straight shot to many desirable locations, for example, waterfront. (I walked as well as took the Metro, «University» is the stop.)
* the walk IS a hill, and if you come from waterfront — up Seneca, it’s less steep! (Seneca to Boren, back to Spring and that’s the Inn entrance)
* there is parking at two nearby garages
* the elevators are smallish (I’m always a stair person myself) and the stairway here is wind-​y! (Which was a trip because in that old Chicago building I’d mentioned, it was the same!!) You may get dizzy if you’re fast!

The hotel is older but that gives it character. The room was comfortable, the staff was friendly and the room service was fantastic.

I was surprised at some of the older reviews I read. We loved our stay here! But we loved the décor of a boutique hotel. The staff was helpful and friendly. The room was spacious and accommodating. My wife and I slept like babies with full bellies! The room was a bit warm upon arrival but we cracked the window and turned down the thermostat. No biggie! We stayed 4 nights and are sure to return.
There are many nice restaurants and coffee shops in the area (loved Vito’s) and its about a 30 minute walk to the Waterfront area of Seattle (though I don’t recommend it if you are not use to steep hills).

The first night we were there we stayed in room 407. It was 78 degrees, so we turned off the heat. By midnight it was 84 degrees, then 81 with all the windows open. We couldn’t sleep. The front desk staff (nice folks) said that they’d get the heating problem solved by the end of the day. At 6 pm the room was still 81 degrees. We were told that when we returned from dinner all would be well. When we returned at 10 pm we were told that all was well, but the heat was still blasting. We called down to the front desk and they said that they’d get someone on it immediately. We asked for a new room and they gave us one. It’s impossible to believe that this wasn’t a long standing issue for that room. If you stay, do not stay in room 407!!!
The manager did not charge us for the first night and was very apologetic.

Am giving this three stars this time only because we got a different type of room that was larger and a bit nicer. Would have liked to give this two and a half stars but with Unilocal you can’t do that, ergo I gave it three.
This hotel is convenient if you are with someone who is a hospital patient but there is no others reason to stay there although it is close to downtown and within walking distance.
Sadly, there is no restaurant in the hotel at this point. The clerk told me that the hospital used to run it and they decided to close it because it wasn’t making any money. The hotel says in January they plan on opening something. Meanwhile you do have the option of using the room service the hospital offers. It’s not great food but it’s not expensive, you need to have cash when they deliver but they do make change; or you can eat at one of the various places nearby.
The housekeeping was just so so. They have a nice one cup, coffee maker with both coffee and tea pods. However, I used one and then left the cup. Two days later that dirty cup was still sitting there. The towels are thin and small, definitely not first rate.
While this hotel isn’t the best, it beats the Baroness across the street

Yes this hotel looks like the Twilight zone hotel but it is modernized. TV is a flatscreen, new carpets — even in hallways. One elevator is a tad small, but it goes fast enough — never waited long. People who complain the bathroom is small have high standards. The bathroom is normal sized and no smaller than any marriot I’ve been to.
Of note: Gluten free room service options! This was awesome and I only realized this on my last day. Lots of choices.
Cons: No microwave and no fridge. I had to open my bathroom window and close the door to keep my left overs fresh. Kinda obnoxious which is why I knocked off a star. Plenty of space for a minifridge.

Just returned from Seattle, wife booked at this hotel. Cheap less than $ 100 a nite. Read the reviews and got a little apprehensive about several reviews about bed bugs! Nope none was found in our room, although small it was clean and adequate for sleeping. You come to Seattle and you’re gonna stay in your room!!! More betta stay home! Room was run down, AC wasn’t working and the windows although broken still was able to open so that took care of that problem. Bathroom shower leaked into the bathtub so that didn’t bother me. Finishes in the room where worn, paint peeling in some places and carpet was faded and tattered. But it was clean, safe and the staff was very friendly. Location was good, close walking distance to Pikes and the shopping districts. Yup it was hilly but hey it’s Seattle, wife said San Fran was worse. I would stay there again, there and the Inn at Queen Ann, that’s another good value cheap hotel.

The price, location, and cleanliness make this place worth staying. If you have someone at the hospital, it is very convenient, and you can walk into the hospital without going outside. It’s a difficult time when a friend or family member is in the hospital, and the convenience of The Inn is invaluable. There is a little snack bar place and tables off the lobby, pleasant outdoor patio too. I had the curry chicken salad sandwich which was just OK. The hotel elevator is tiny but comes quickly and works well. They have room service for meals, no tipping allowed, and the prices are very reasonable. I had the turkey and gravy, broccoli. It was good enough.
In addition to room service, there is a pretty good cafeteria in the hospital.
As far as the room goes, everything worked fine, plenty of hot water, towels were clean and thick, beds freshly made up and comfortable. Carpeting was new and clean. The large room was clean and servicable but also somewhat gloomy with low wattage light bulbs. Our room windows opened onto the street so we let in light and air that way. The TV sat on a long credenza thing which was too close to the bathroom door, and I injured my leg on it. The rooms have coffee makers.
If you are handicapped, call ahead and find out where the handicapped entrance is, otherwise you will be hauling your suitcase up a flight of 6 – 8 steep stairs.
The staff members were very nice to us; however, one person at the front desk gave us incorrect driving directions which caused us some difficulty. (If you don’t really know the directions, don’t try to make something up.)
Parking was $ 24 every 24 hours in the lot across the street. The Baroness hotel is across the street as well, which is another close-​to-​the-​hospital place people can stay.
I’ve posted a lot of negatives here, but if we need to use the Virginia Mason hospital again, we would also stay at the Inn. The negatives are tolerable.

Avoid this hotel! We took the Metro Transit to University station and called the hotel for directions which were given to us incorrectly. The room was small and cramped with uncomfortable beds and a poorly maintained bathroom with scratchy, dingy towels. One of our access cards quit working before we checked out and the desk clerk was across the street when we went down to have it reactivated so we could enter the room. Finally, the evening before we checked out we lifted the mattress and discovered bed bugs. We left early the following morning. Worst place ever!

You should avoid this hotel! Most of my stay was fine. In fact I require very few amenities when it comes to hotels. My philosophy is that I will only spend a limited amount of time in the room so I don’t need a lot of perks.
With that being said, a sink that drains is not on the «optional» list. I stayed here over a Friday and Saturday night. On Saturday morning I was brushing my teeth and realized that the sink did not drain for quite a while. As I was leaving for the day (approximately 9:00 am), I reported this to the front desk and asked them to check on it. They replied that they would.
Later that evening (around 8:00 pm or so) I went into the bathroom and saw that the water still had not drained. At this point I called the front desk and they had a maintenance person come up. He fiddled with it for about 20 minutes and reported that someone else would have to come up. No one did. In the morning my sink was full of brown dirty water and I could nothing with it.
At check out the manager took $ 90 off my bill. I suggested he reimburse for one entire night. He replied that the General manager would call me and sort this out.
I never did receive a call (it has been 5 days now and counting) and I guess they just don’t care that much.
Anyway, avoid this place!

I stayed at this hotel once to try and save a little cash. Never again. Not only were the rooms cramped and the twin beds incredibly uncomfortable, but the worst part was that I found BED BUGS!!!
After checking out early and asking for a refund (we didn’t even stay the whole night), not only were we charged twice, but the hotel manager tried to insinuate that we brought them with us. I’ve never been treated so poorly before. Stay Away!

For the price, the location, the cleanliness, and the parking this place is totally a value. We were here on a Friday night and easily found the parking lot associated with the hotel ($ 20 per 24 hours with in and out privileges for those staying at the hotel — a great value for the area!).
We needed cheap, and this was cheap, but it was also clean — my primary objective. The room we were in might have been a handicapped room or maybe all of their rooms are handicapped accessible, but there was plenty of room for a wheel chair around the room and in the bathroom.
The only one negative-​ish was that there are really no frills. Our room did not have the hair dryer that I assume will always be at a hotel room.
All of the staff was helpful and the room was quiet. Considering price and convenience, I’d totally stay here again!
