History

Established in 1951.

Gary, started out in this world the same year Greenwood Optical first opened it’s doors in the Greenwood neighborhood. In the 1980’s, Gary took over and has continued to keep up the standards that have kept our customers coming back for years! As time passed he has handed over the torch to the trusted and loved doctor Marisa Monterola. Say hello and meet our new staff!

Dr. Monterola grew up in San Francisco, CA. She received her bachelor’s degree in Cell and Molecular Biology from San Francisco University, and went on to pursue her degree in Doctor of optometry from Pacific University College of Optometry. Dr. Monterola performed her externship at McClellan Air Force Base in Sacramento, CA. She has been practicing in the northwest for over twenty years and has been an independent doctor of Optometry at Greenwood Optical for the last tweleve years.

Dr. Monterola enjoys a loyal clientele due to her caring attitude and attention to details. Her comprehensive vision exam includes screening for glaucoma, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, hypertensive retinopathy, and macular degeneration.

I chose them because they are close to where I live. The exam was pretty standard, not terribly thorough but felt good enough. I chose to get the contact lens exam because I usually wear contacts, and paid the extra charge. Ok, also pretty standard. I now buy my contacts through them and have done so for a year now.
Unfortunately, the older woman who is usually at the front desk has the worst cigarette breath and general smell. Its hard to even get through a transaction. Today I decided I wanted to get prescription sunglasses made. But I wanted to shop around because the styles they have are pricey and the aforementioned cigarette smell makes me nauseas. I asked for my full prescription so I could do so and they told me that it would be a $ 20 charge to get my pupillary distance measured!!! $ 20 WHOLE DOLLARS. I’ve had this measured before, but I’ve since lost the prescription. Regardless! I’ve already paid for an exam, give me my full prescription.
Ugh. The Dr. is very nice, too bad the grumpy people at the front stink. Literally!

First off they aren’t open on weekends don’t even suggest it. Be prepared to accommodate their schedule not yours. When you do get in there be prepared because eye exam lady doesn’t really explain anything just drops the prescription and runs so don’t bother to ask any questions. Eyeglasses folks don’t really explain anything just slide in $ 132.00 fancy coating on the lenses without asking whether you want it or not. Old guy stated «I assume you want the coating» once, then dropped it like its hot right onto the bill. Takes forever to get the glasses because they don’t actually carry frames, they’ll tell you oh no problem 3 days which actually turned into 7 in which time they forgot that they told you 3 «we would have never told you 3». When you pick them up old lady who was your best friend when selling you the glasses drops the atomic cold shoulder on you from the top rope. Place was down right trippy

So my review is about getting an eye exam not about purchasing or getting glasses here.
THIS PLACE SMELLS LIKE CIGARETTE SMOKE!
Smelling of smoke and looking like it hasn’t been updated since 1955 is something that I look for if I’m going out to a quirky bar, but not something I really want in a place i’m about to get an eye exam in.
I’m shocked no reviews have mentioned the smoke, its pretty strong. I immediately regretted booking this place for an appointment the minute I walked in.
I also received a charge for a dilation that I opted out of and I did not agree with the prescription I was given. So these factors all together account for the 1 Unilocal rating.

While I was excited that this incredibly close location was going to fix the broken temple of my white frames for $ 15, and how it only took two days to get it done, I’m really disappointed in a couple other ways.
Firstly, the guy talked down on my frames quite a bit and pointed out several flaws in them due to poor manufacturing (I got them first pair free on Coastal). That’s cool to point out the melted part of the inside lens groove, but I would never have noticed and they are my favorites.
Then he said he’d fix the temple, and try to replace the other so they matched— I said I didn’t care if they did or not but okay. I didn’t realize he was going to replace the whole arm!
So now he took the cool, new, fancy black arms off my white frame glasses and put really pretty lame clear brown ones on with used, scratched up logos that say «made in China».
He pretty much ruined my favoring pair by changing the colors. Didn’t give me mine back, so I assume they’re gone forever. Really disappointed.

After reading good reviews here my wife decided to give them a try. They are very nice. Unfortunately two weeks after her exam they still hadn’t called her back with any update about her contact lens order.

So far not impressed. Initially, they seemed great. However, the glasses that I bought from them never worked well for me and it has been a struggle to get them to help me remedy that. I have never had a more frustrating experience getting glasses.

I’ve been going to Greenwood Optical in Seattle for more than ten years.
Since my prescription is unique, I appreciate that Gary grinds his own lenses, offers fair prices for the one-​on-​one service and selection of frames and lenses, and it is a locally owned, family based business.
The staff is friendly, informed about eye wear (they advised me not to buy a particular type of lenses due to my prescription and previously were happy to just make a set of lenses instead of buying a complete set of frames and lenses), and are happy to see me even if I don’t buy something.
The last time I went in to donate some old glasses to the Lion’s Club bin, they tightened one of screws and of course, as others pointed out, it was no charge.
It is definitely one of the best optical shops in Seattle.

I’ve really been trying to hold my tongue because I want to like it here, but the front of house staff simply needs an attitude adjustment. Plain and simple. It is not an inviting environment, and one lady in particular has a very rude exterior and is quite condescending. I honestly haven’t had any positive experiences in the glasses/​eye dept. in the last 10 years in Seattle, so I have no other recommendations. If you do, please let me know!

I recently upgraded my existing pair of glasses to my new prescription here. The customer service was exceptional: friendly, efficient, and very professional. They billed my insurance company directly, saving me the time of having to pay out of pocket and submit a reimbursement. The turnaround time was very quick, just a day or two. All in all, I was very impressed and will return here for all my vision needs in the future.
They also adjust watches on the side. I took a watch that needed to size down a few links there last week and they adjusted it at no charge.

I went in for my first pair of eye glasses knowing absolutly nothing and came out wondering if I should now open my own optical store with all of the information I’d received! Everyone there could’nt have been more helpful. The doctor and staff are exceptionally nice and their seclection of frames is FANTASTIC.

This place is pretty great. The staff is knowledgable along with being super nice. They have a nice range of perscription glasses along with the top designer brands that are not sold elsewhere. The only big negative that i can see from this is that there is no parking and they are hiddena little bit. Other than that, this place is solid and great place to get your perscriptions!

I came into Greenwood Optical to have a screw replaced on a pair of glasses, and they fixed them for me, very quickly, free of charge! The staff was friendly, and the selection looked great. I’ll definitely be back!
