Elite Event @ Intiman Theatre

I Know that several people noticed that I got up about 20 minutes after the show started and didn’t return to my seat; never-​fear folks, I took a quick breather and made my way to a seat in the back where I felt not so consumed by the heat in the building. Perhaps it was the vodka punch, but more it seemed the teeeennnny tinnnyyy seats in the theatre. They were comfy, but lordy, they’re tiny seats, and So grippingly close together. Whew.
That said; the show pre-​game was great, lots of friendly folks, met a few new, saw some old that I always love, and enjoyed some yummy eats. I saved a Landrin chocolate treat for my boss and he loved it. I tried several and they were all tasty!
The show itself, as others have said, was perhaps a bit too dramatic, but it wasn’t really over-​the-​top as far as theatre goes. I’ve seen a lot of live theatre and the drama-​level of the actors seemed pretty average to me. They did a great job of using the stage to accommodate all different kinds of scenes. The «room» was many locations in the story, and the actors moved fluidly from one location to the next. I was impressed, and also felt for the lone female actress having to portray all the female characters, but she did a fabulous job.
A great thought-​provoking story adapted from a true literary classic. Those who stuck around seemed to enjoy the post-​show discussion and while I passed on my white russian, I heard from many that they were great.
Love the Intiman staff, and the intimacy of the theatre, even if I was seemingly claustrophobic for the evening. Another great event by the lovely Katie.

This was my first Elite and event and what a great time it was! I loved that it was a smaller group of Unilocaler’s and that there was plenty of food and drink to go around for everyone!
I had no idea what to expect since this was my first time at Intiman. The theater is obviously a lot smaller than ones I have been in in the past and I don’t think there’s a bad seat in the house. The play was amazing and I loved how dramatic the actors were!
The discussion afterward over (some very strong) white Russians was great to hear how other folks interpreted certain parts of the plays. There were lots of good questions asked too and the facilitator kept it moving. We’ll definitely be back here in the future! Awesome event Katie!

If you enjoy suspence and drama, this play fills the bill. Galen Joseph Osier is spellbinding as Raskolnikov. On many occasions the theatre was gripped by the raw emotion Osier demonstrated. Moore was equally outstanding as Det. Porfiry. Ms Lass was at the top of her form playing multiple roles.
I wasn’t this drained after a play since seeing Doubt in New York. Great job Intiman.

What a cool theater! Having the distinct pleasure of being invited to Crime and Punishment, I attended the prefunction gathering in a small room on the second floor with drinks and hors d’oeuvres. A very nice way to socialize and mingle with friends.
Entering the theater and finding my seat, I found the seating to be a little tight and several minutes into the play I was fanning myself cool. The layout is fantastic for its purpose. no bad seat in the place. I would gamble to say the lobby is almost as big as the theater. Overall, I’m supremely impressed Seattle has a place like Intiman Theatre.

I love how our dear M’lady works out an array of different events to keep us entertained. High-​end dinning, magic berries and now this delightful evening at the Theater… wonderful!
The Intiman is an almost spartan place, but I did like that. Decoration is unostentatious and low key, and I did enjoy very much the display of visual aids pertaining to the show. Good photos, nice printed posters, elegant displays. I do agree with my fellow Unilocalers about the temperature in the stage area: dress up lightly because it’s hot in there.
The set design and lightning was simple but to me, very effective. The change on stage for the last minutes of the play was fantastic (no spoiler here, go see the play!)
It was interesting to watch Crime & Punishment in English, as I’ve seen it in Spanish several times. In my humble opinion, I did enjoy the adaptation. Very much, actually. It’s hard to pack such a dense story, covering its most important aspects, in 90 minutes. I think the Intiman production is successful in that matter.
The acting was a bit melodramatic and tormenting at times. There’s a «but» though. Like I would say about most Latino stories, being dangerously close to the soap-​opera quality, we were watching Russian classic literature at its best. Raskolnikov had to deal with profound moral anguish, a bit of a «Napoleon» complex and two murders! To put the cherry on top, at the time Dostoevsky wrote Crime & Punishment, he was in terrible debt and trying to fight Russian nihilism… isn’t that dramatic enough?
My favorite character in this particular performance was Porfiry. And I enjoyed the post-​performance talk. There were some really interesting questions, and the fact that the theater staff was well prepared to answer them was great. It was even better to be there sipping the delicious White Russian. Strong drink. One was definitely enough.
From Kathleen sweetly greeting us at the theater entrance to the pre-​show get together hosted by Katie, my good luck on having the very last Landrin Chocolate, the play and the closing talk, everything was very enjoyable.
I will be back to the Intiman. ¡Muchas gracias!

I will have to agree with James. I didn’t love the acting in the play. However, I do loving going to the theater and spending time with my peeps… so it was a winner winner chicken dinner evening.

Once again Katie put together an incredible event. This was my first visit to the Intiman Theater, and I’ll definitely be back. Such a cool, intimate space and a first-​class production. I highly recommend catching a show here if you haven’t before.

Fantastic venue and place to bring Seattle new (or perhaps different) perspectives on some classics. The seating is intimate but comfortable – there is not a bad seat in the house. The staff are friendly and helpful, and the bar is open after the shows (woo hoo!) to continue post play discussions. They even hosted a discussion after Crime and Punishment to allow people to air their views on crimes and society… with White Russians of course! In all, another wonderful place with reasonable ticket prices to get your cultural mojo on!

I really, really want to give better praise for the Unilocal Elite Event at Intiman Theatre but I had to walk out of «Crime and Punishment». I always love seeing me some Ms Katie S, and chatting with friends and new faces alike is always a highlight of any elite event.
However… Within minutes of the actors taking the stage all I could think was «Sweet Baby Jesus where’s the exit.» I’m sure other Unilocalers will feel differently but My God, the director needs to dial down the melodramatic movements of the actors. And the fluctuation of the accents! Christ. Seriously, add steak platters with side salads and you have dinner theater.

Well, Katie and Kathleen sure know how to put on an awesome event!
This was my first time out wearin’ that little Elite tag and it was sure a good one.
The pre-​show soirée was great fun with good munchies and good people. And we had fun looking at the photos all around the room that showed so much Intiman history.
The play reminded me that I really need to get out and see live theatre more often. The acting was fabulous, and it was so cool to see a lengthy novel be condensed into a 90 minute play and somehow work.
The post-​play festivities reminded me that I really need to get out and drink White Russians more often. Seriously, it had been years, and, boy, was it tasty. But, even more seriously, the post-​play discussion was very interesting and informative. I always like hearing about the «bones» of the creative process and this talk did not disappoint.
The entire Intiman staff were so accommodating and made us feel so welcome. It was a great evening. Thanks again, ladies. I’m looking forward to the next…

I was really pleased to have a chance to see Crime & Punishment [White Russians and the little pins that say «Axe me about Crime & Punishment» don’t hurt, either]. You have to admire the marathon performance by Galen Joseph Osier, who is on stage for a hunted, harried, sweat-​soaked 90 minutes.
But the real highlight of an Elite event, for me, is not so much what we do (see a play, see a band, eat weird foods, eat expensive weird foods, etc.), but who we are. My favorite part of the evening is always meeting new Unilocalers and seeing the people I’ve already come to know, and my favorite Elite events will always be the ones with the most mingling time. Your average Unilocaler is just more interesting to me than Raskolnikov, Sonya and Porfiry!

My second Unilocal event and another enjoyable evening. And so well organized. Thanks to all involved. I haven’t read Crime and Punishment so the play was absolutely new info to me. Kudos to the sponsor company that provided those chocolates (I lost my wrapper) but the one I had was terribly good. Cheers for a nice night.

This was my first experience here at Intiman Theatre. We went to see «Crime and Punishment». We showed up late due to not being able to find parking, then finally found a lot for $ 7. Not the best, but really not that bad by today’s standards.
They have limited stage space it seems but man they can make it work in so many ways. Looked as though the stage is made bigger for other plays. In this play, they used lighting, sound, and accents to push you to a different location each act. There were only 3 actors the whole time and I wished they had used a couple more due to the variance of characters but I thought they pulled it off great. The stage had 3 doors on it that they kept going in and out to signify different buildings or locations. I couldn’t figure it out at first but once I got it the play was very enjoyable.
It seemed to be overly hot in there and the seats were a bit cramped, big guys beware. You get a great view from any seat though.
In agreement with James E., I thought the actors could tone down the «melodramatic movements» a bit but I really enjoyed their interpretation of «Crime and Punishment». I always feel these plays are works of art and I love to see the artists/​actors expression of the play.
They do discussions at the end of the night about the play and you can purchase White Russians. Thought this would be really cool if I was into that sort of thing.

What a lovely event: we were able to mix, mingle and get cultured.
This was my first experience at the Intiman, and I will be looking for more opportunities to come back. From the opening words welcoming us to the 90 intense minutes of «Crime» to the wonderful post-​play discussion, white russion in hand, it was all a first-​rate evening.

Let me preface this by saying, this was my first elite event (even though I’ve been elite for almost a year now. man. I need to pick up my game :-p). I didn’t really know what to expect. but I had a really great time!
The actual show itself was (in my very picky opinion) ³⁄₅ for me, it definitely was worth a viewing and I am glad I had the opportunity to do so. On the drive home, my +1 and I had a long debate over why I’m so damn biased (we figured it out: it’s because I speak Russian and know way too much about Russian culture in general). He said it was amazing, so maybe listen to him instead.
The before party was lovely. Giving me booze is pretty much guaranteeing my enjoyment, but it was fun to meet some of you in person and just put faces with names.
Thank you, Seattle Unilocalers for being gentle to me on my first event, and thank you Intiman Theatre for putting on a great night. :)

I really did have a great time.
I kept thinking «what did I do to deserve all this?»
Here’s something about me that a lot of people don’t really know:
I love a vegetable platter. I mean your basics– broccoli, baby carrots, those little tomatoes that look like red grapes, etc, with blue cheese or ranch or hummus dip. I love it. I can’t get enough of it. It was all there, with like 4 different types of crackers. Julie B. and I tried to have a conversation but I got a little nervous about talking with my mouth full because I kept scarfing the stuff down.
Not to mention the punch.
Not to mention THE PLAY, which was SO SO SO depressing and effective and fantastic. I hate the whole «psycho thriller» billing that they’re trying to give it– it really is powerful enough on its own– but I guess tickets need to be sold and all that.
Not to mention the free White Russian, which was really, really strong and fantastic.
Not to mention the second free White Russian, given to me by a dude named Sadler that I’d never seen before.
Not to mention the after-​play discussions that the Intiman Theatre is having now. It actually helped shed some light on what we’d all just seen/​experienced.

Let me say, for the record, that I know how to tell apart the ordinary people from the extraordinary ones. The extraordinary ones have these red nametags that say «Elite» on them.
This may mean that I’m destined for a life of crime. Or it may not.
The point is, this event was an absolute blast, and who has time to even consider a life of crime when you’re partying it up with other extraordinary people? The company was great, the drinks were great (I *loved* the white russian after the show), and the show was excellent. A terrific evening all around!

Ok, ok, ok. I didn’t make this event, but I do know Kathleen (she rocks), have been to Intiman (even backstage, yeah, my performance kicked booty), and I do plan on seeing Crime & Punishment next time I’m on the West Side.
Once again, I’m stuck on the East Side with my nose over the Cascades looking at you cool Unilocalers having a fabulous time at another stellar Unilocal Event.
Once again – sounds like a GREAT event Kathleen! Hope you had a drink and toasted yourself!

It was hard to limit myself to only trying a couple of the Landrin chocolates. They were so tasty!
Nice munchies and tasty punch that got considerably stronger just before the show…
Oh and Unilocalers rock! Great opportunity to see some again and meet some new ones :)
Crime & Punishment:
It got started with something along the lines of «Please have your phones off during the show, but after it ends… turn them on and Unilocal about it!»
Theater… I always feel so strange and out of touch when things start. I DID get into it, though, and it had very intense moments. I really enjoyed the performance and am glad I took the opportunity to experience it. It was also interesting seeing three people play all the roles… and it’ll probably take another day or two to fully process.
White Russian Discussion:
Our ride came early, so I was only there for a moment of that. I like the idea of a post-​play discussion, though, and my boyfriend said the drinks were tasty… so tasty that he helped me out by finishing mine when I was taking too long. ;) (I guess I feel a little funny every time I think about being a white Russian drinking a White Russian?)
