Earthwise Building Salvage

Five stars for selection, variety and helpful staff. Three stars for prices. Great place if budget is not a consideration. Good place to take yourself on an artist date and be inspired.

Great materials and while some items (doors) were priced aggressively, much of the wood was very reasonable. I purchased a great piece of live edge for less than I could find throughout Seattle. Will be back soon.

As a new homeowner, I have come to love stores like Earthwise. I really like Ballard Reuse but decided to check out Earthwise because I saw on Craigslist that they had barn wood available.
At these stores, you’re basically paying for someone else’s junk but your treasure. I don’t know how and where these stores get their things and how much they pay for them, but I imagine the markup is quite a bit. We got enough barn wood for a 80″ x 36″ headboard and it cost about $ 100. That is expensive for old junkyard wood, in my opinion.
I was looking at glass doorknobs and I was surprised by the price. I thought, «Ballard Reuse would never charge that much». I was right — I went to Ballard Reuse the next day and their glass doorknobs were at least $ 5 (20%) cheaper.
You never know what you’ll find here and although Earthwise is on the pricey side, sometimes you find that perfect item you’ve been looking for for months and will pay anything for it.

I frequent most of the architectural salvage shops in Seattle as it is part of my business and they are primary sources of material for the work I do. While Earthwise has some cool stuff, their prices are by far the highest in Seattle, especially for lumber. The staff is friendly but my visits have tapered off considerably in the last year simply because I can no longer afford to shop there.

This place is like a serial killers dungeon. A spectacle of visual bliss and textural ecstasy. So why the average rating? The price.
The items found here are literally salvaged from dumps and old houses and who knows what brought in the cat curious musty huge warehouse. Everything from old varieties of doors, every type of hinge, doorhandle, or escutcheon (look that one up!), tons of window frames, stained glass and otherwise, random as hell side paneling and floor panels and beams, pots and kitschy outdoor random things. Knick knacks a plenty. Hallways of random cabinets, tables, and wardrobes. seriously this store has a ton of stuff. But these things cost a lotttt. If you’re looking for the super perfect one of a kind door, this place might have what you are looking for. sure, then it’s worth the price. But if you’re browsing for a maybe I’ll start a project then this place might not be the best option.
It’s probably more geared towards homeowners who have legitimate things to fix up. Not really for the hobbyist in my opinion. I think of the prices as a kind of «look at our trendy store in SoDo we’re gonna jack up the prices» sure, employees need to be paid and these guys work hard and are totally super friendly, but you could find these exact items in a handful of other places for much less or more likely even free. The convenience of everything tossed into semi-​neat arrangements in a huge warehouse is what this place has going for it.
Long ramble. A really cool place to check out, but prepare to spend quite a bit if you are prepared to purchase.

I kind of get super high here. There is a euphoric trance that takes over my body from just walking in. Tons of hours have been lost exploring all the crevices and nooks hidden in this trove of salvaged goods.
For presents, I like to build stuff. When my gal pal said, I really need a huge wall of hooks to hang all my jewelry, scarves, hats and purses-​I took it as «Delilah, help»! And so, I found myself leaving recently with a fantastically thick, vintage door, with several hooks, cabinet knobs and small towel racks. Thank you.
I’ve literally thought about working here, just to be able to be in this space for longer periods of time without seeming like a weirdo. And I take my friends, family and random people that I know for short periods of time here-​just to give them the gift that is Earthwise. You should come, find used stuff here and then repurpose it. It’s an absolute treasure chest. Bring a truck or roomie wagon.

I came here today after getting my pool water tested by neighbor Aqua Quip.
I need to build a chicken coop and was looking for ideas and inspiration among the treasures of Earthwise’s recycled stuff.
Maybe some repurposed wood, a door, some windows, and a big ‘ol bathtub of dirt would make for happy backyard chickens.
I didn’t buy anything today, but had fun poking around their current stock.

A great place to spend a ton of time rummaging through beautiful cast-​offs, find cool new ideas, and meet interesting people. What more can I say – check it out for yourself!

Came here for a door, left with tons of other ideas for future projects. One of the coolest stores in the city! So much unique stuff. While the shop doesn’t occupy a ton of space, it’s very easy to get lost in all of it. Props to Earthwise. Y’all are rad!

These guys have a ton of stuff! Like I had posted in my earlier review when they were in their old location, they have a lot of stuff from 30s — late 1800s homes. Which makes me a bit sad to know this stuff is being torn down.
Still not a lot of stuff for your mid century modern shoppers. Although I did find an awesome doorbell from 1966 and some drawer pulls with their round backplanes intact.
Prices seem to be in line for the large stuff due to their uniqueness. For my drawer pulls, those were $ 5 for 10 and my doorbell was $ 25.

I have found this place to be hit or miss. Sometimes they have a good selection and sometimes they don’t. But I found I have to be really careful about their pricing — sometimes they way overcharge for stuff you can buy new at Home Depot or ikea for a lot less than this store. Specific examples I have seen are slate tiles, kitchen sinks and lumber.

Walked over to Earthwise today on my lunch break, hoping to look at cool stuff for houses, since we just bought a mid-​century home that needs some updating. It was great! The staff were very friendly but not intrusive. I felt perfectly comfortable walking around the store, asking a lot of questions, but not buying anything yet! I especially loved the chandelier and glass section, but there were many, many other possibilities, things I haven’t seen anywhere else. Will be back once we make some decisions about what we’re doing with the homestead…

I always see pictures of homes with cool things. You know… the tables that used to be this… picture frames made out of that… decorations made from xyz… and now I know where to find all those things.
The first time I came here, I was giddy and speechless. I wanted to leave with a door, some yard ornaments, a bathtub, some old windows, and about a ton of repurposed wood. However, I didn’t have the space or money for all of that… so I left with an old long drill bit that I stuck in one of my container garden pots.
I can’t say that the staff was super friendly… they answered my question when I hunted someone down… but it was a hunt. And a waiting game.
I’ll be back. Again and again.

I feel stuck at 4 stars today, most of the businesses I want to review seem to say ‘Yay I’m a Fan’ when I think of them.
In a nutshell: This place is awesome but a bit spendy.
That said, you’ll find some stuff here that’s out of this world (sometimes perhaps literally?) and it’s a vintage homeowner’s dream. To find replacement parts, decorating ideas, and they’re great folks to boot.
Still, for me, I’m a thrify gal and the prices aren’t high but they’re not bargain basement either, other than the sales — tile was 65% off I think so about 10% of the price of new.

I’ve been here a few times and found some cool stuff. I have a mid-​century modern house and they don’t have a lot of stuff like that but if you have an art deco or craftsman style house let the good times begin. Need a door or doorknob? How about a period window or toilet?
They have tons of stuff like that. Also tile, fireplace parts, sinks, cabinets, light poles, marble, toilets, railings, light fixtures ect. Also a nice selection of oddball antiques. Parking can be tight and a pain to get out of if you have a large vehicle. Some things are priced a bit on the high side but ask if they can do better and sometimes you can be pleasantly surprised. I would highly recommend but be prepared for more than one trip since there is a lot to take in.

If you have ever looked in like a green building magazine and been like WTF?! all of these houses are made out of the coolest shit!!!
Well all that bad ass shit comes from places like this. You gotta put a little elbow grease into most stuff you bring home but unique badassness is gonna require a level of dedication.
I bought tons of stuff for a restaurant that I opened put tons of elbow grease into all of it and get tons of compliments on almost all of it. Saved a grip too compared to what you would spend contracting out to have cool shit made.
All the employees seemed super cool and eager to help and give their 2 cents. They seemed like they genuinely like working in a crazy salvage yard. That is something that takes a very specific personality, so cheers to the person doing the hiring.

What a great spot choc full of amazing architectural salvage, from old street signs, to windows, doors, hardware Victorian and Deco era misceallany such as sconces, shades, ballisters, cornices, rosettes, old wood flooring, tiles, and garden art.
Super cordial staff, a great walk through time. If you’re the creative sort or just appreicte old archtiecture as much as I, your romance begins the minute you walk thruogh the front gate!

I want a house that needs lots of old antique and sorta antique stuff. I mean the kind of place where you know these guys are going to show up there in 20 years and re-​salvage all the stuff you bought from them the first time cuz it really was just that awesome.
So today I started down that path with just a pair of unassuming light fixtures. I have no idea where that apothecary wall and mirror can go, but I’m pretty sure I need it. Maybe a bar-​back and some old style toilets, too.

Did ya ever wonder what. if anything. happens with all the great old fixtures when a cool old house is slotted for demo? It is sad to see historic places ripped down, but don’t worry, some items are stripped out and saved! Here is where a lot of useful vintage house parts now rest.
They have a good selection of cool lamps, antique fixtures, doors, windows, cabinets, cool glass, dressers– you name it. I always get inspired with lots of fun ideas when I come here.
We went in this time looking for a ‘pocket’ door, the old kind that slides into the wall. We were really having a hard time finding one online.
Not only did we find one here, they have a whole section labeled «pocket doors» and we found just what we wanted– a ‘real wood’ door (not the plastic-​wood-​material-​door-​thing they sell at Lowes nowadays.)
So now we have a door that needs a lil cleaning but was only $ 35 bucks. The wood alone is likely worth that. They work hard saving the vintage items from otherwise demolition death and seem to price it affordable enough so it can be ‘loved’ again.
Pros:
–Organized bins and labeled piles.
–Helpful and knowledgeable staff.
–Free parking.
Cons:
–It’s like a warehouse shop so everything is covered in thick ‘antique dust.’ (but, it is kinda fun to clean off your own glowing treasure for the cost you pay. ;)
