Double-Hung Window Restoration

Martin contacted me after I left a message for him regarding window repair. I had been told by another repair company that they would assist, however, I told Martin that I would like him as back-​up. I indeed phoned Martin after the other company failed to contact me. I described my dilemma and Martin arrived the next day. Though his forte is wood windows, he quickly and skillfully fixed my vinyl windows. Martin is kind, polite and professional, I recommend him to anyone who wants a true craftsman.

I contacted Martin through email to check prices and get some advice. Like all the other reviews he has a long wait list. I am currently attempting to restore the original windows in a 103 year old home. I wanted to hire Martin to come to Tacoma and hands on show me how to fix one window, so that I could do the rest on my own. (This is because I’m crazy.) Unfortunately he is booked out for 9 + months, but even better he has been walking me through step by step on how to do this on my own and answering the questions I have through email. His website has videos and how too’s and he himself has been amazing with advice. I am excited to be hands on with woodwork and the repair of my home Martin’s knowledge and reassurance has been epic for me. He has passion for doing what he does and that is hard to find.
I love sending him my photos and asking advice. He has not charged me for his time and has been a God send. I can’t wait to send him the photo of my finished windows.

I don’t think I have ever met anyone so meticulous in my life! Martin is one of the few people in Seattle who can restore double hung windows to their original full working order. I had six such windows, most of which had upper sashes that were painted shut and all ropes and weights long gone. After 3 full days of work he restored them all to full working order, and I now get fresh air in rooms that have been stale for decades.
Martin is in high demand — it take weeks or even months just to get him out for an estimate and another seven months from that point to have the work done, but there are so few people who do this work and he has perfected the art of doing so. He gives you a worst case scenario estimate (he charges by the hour but the estimate caps the total cost for the work), and in my case he came in about $ 800 below estimate. On average, it ends up costing about $ 500 per window, but it really is well worth it as these old windows are so much better than the new stuff.
He follows all safety precautions so there is no risk of lead paint chips floating around your house, which is great for someone like me with a small child. He leaves the place cleaner than he found it too!
The one thing he does not do is touch-​up paint work on the windows, which they will need once he is done. I recommend Alfsvaag Painting (which was one of the painters he recommended to me), as their bid was far more reasonable than anyone else I spoke with.

Martin runs an A+ business. His work is meticulous, he is honest and fair, and he is very clean and careful. With a toddler in the house, I very much appreciated his knowledge of how to handle lead paint. He does just one thing, he knows it well, and he does it well. I can’t say he was cheap, but considering the quality of his work and the way he runs his business, I would not hesitate for a second to use him again.
He has a very long waiting list. I recommend calling him 6 – 9 months before you want to have him work on your windows.

I can’t say enough good things about these folks. Martin and his crew do an amazing job. They show up when they say they will, they do what they say they will, and they do it extremely well and with tremendous attention to detail. They keep things as clean as possible while they work (their workshop is in their truck), and thoroughly clean up after themselves before they leave. They are friendly, conscientious, and experts in their field. This is an operation with real integrity. We’ve hired lots of people to work on our house over the years, but these guys are the best. Absolutely worth the wait.

Ay carumba. I have NEVER seen such meticulous work. Windows that are 100 years old being restored to their original working function. Process is slow but worth it — maybe 2 – 3 windows per day. Three man crew will leave your house spotless after a days work for very little interuption considering they take your windows out. Much appreciation for those who appreciate preserving the integrity of a century old home (or older). Very nice, well priced and worth the 6 month I had to wait to get them to our house. Well deserving of 10 stars.
