David Thomas Yee, MD

I’m not an expert on ophthalmologists but here is how it went.
My first appointment was Feb 2009 (Presidents Day). I called to make an appointment not realizing it was a holiday. Dr Yee happened to be in the office due to an emergency, asked me how far I was. I told him I was only a mile away. He said if I can come right away he would see me and that is how I had my first appointment on the same day. I was really impressed with that. I really needed to get in and I had time that day. I found him to be extremely thorough and felt confident if I had a problem he would find it. Fortunately I had my new prescription for glasses in hand knowing I had no problems an hour later.
The office is pretty convenient for me. I found parking pretty easily next to the Wells Fargo bank, not sure if he has a lot in the back or not. The office is pretty new and immaculately clean. Much larger than expected.
Around June of 2009 I had called and let the receptionist know that my insurance company had not yet received a claim for the February exam yet. She thanked me profusely for alerting her to this issue. I assumed I would get a bill for my portion if any some time after that. I later saw they submitted a claim and were appropriately paid and forgot all about it. Sometimes providers accept the amount from the insurance company as payment in full and I assumed that was the case here.
For some unknown stupidity on my part I went to an optometrist for my check up last year, and really noticed the difference between an optometrist and an ophthalmologist at that point. Hence made my appointment to go back and see Dr Yee this year.
When I arrived, I was immediately informed that I had a balance of over $ 50 from 2009. I was at first mortified as I typically pay my bills but then realized that I had never been sent a bill. For me it was a source of irritation as I could have easily had any balance taken from my flexible spending account if I was billed in a timely manner but that was no longer an option. So then I was presented with «you owe ~$ 50 for this visit in 2009 + ~$ 40 for today’s visit». My finances were actually better in 2009 so really very frustrated and upset. They seemed to be confused as to why I was so upset about this, they offered no apologies at all for their oversight. My impression is that they are very wealthy people and have no idea that an unexpected $ 50 is a major issue with the average American like me.
So on the stuff that counts, competent to provide good care I would give him an A.

Customer service, average due to huge deduction for offering no apology for the billing fiasco which turned out to be a major inconvenience (and expense) to me.
