The West Seattle location is a full service bike shop carrying Specialized & Giant bicycles run by Westside Bicycles. Cycle University is now only offering indoor classes Oct — May and bicycle fitting, private lessons and coaching by appointment.

The trained staff of coaches at Cycle University have years of top level expertise in all aspects of cycling, and have created classes and concepts to help any level of rider improve. Cycle U provides a wide range of services: personal coaching, bike fitting, fitness testing, skills clinics, private lessons, training camps, boot camps, InCycle™ indoor training, Indoor winter racing, teams and coaching consultations.

History

Established in 2004.

Cycle University was established in 2004 by local pro cyclist Craig Undem to develop the best coaching and teaching methods for cycling. The school has created a large curriculum of proprietary classes and teaching methods.

The trained staff of coaches at Cycle University have years of top level expertise in all aspects of cycling, and have created classes and concepts to help any level of rider improve. Cycle U provides a wide range of services: personal coaching, bike fitting, fitness testing, skills clinics, private lessons, training camps, boot camps, InCycle™ indoor training, Indoor winter racing, teams and coaching consultations.

Today, Cycle University’s team of 9 coaches can help any rider be faster, safer and stronger. Their philosophy of living a well balanced life with cycling and endurance sport as the central way to maximizing physical energy and health is at the core of everything they do.

Business Owner

Craig’s lifelong passions are cycling and endurance sport. Since beginning with a collegiate race in 1983 and eventually racing in the World Championships of Cyclocross, winning a World Cup medal in Mountain Bike Racing, placing 2nd in the US in Elite Criterium Championships, racing Track and Triathlon, he has earned the equivalent of a Doctorate in Cycling on the bike.

Off the bike Craig has been a professional cycling coach and bike fitter since 1996, is currently the Director of all Junior racing in the state of Washington, CEO and founder of Cycle University, former board member of the Marymoor Velodrome and Cyclocross Association and sought after speaker, coach and fitness expert. He is a coach with USACycling and a graduate of the Carmichael Coaching College. Craig coached for Lance Armstrong’s coach for 3 years and assisted him at the Tour de France in 2002 and 2003. Craig also was the Head Coach for the Bristol Myers Tour of Hope in 2003.

I like the people at cycle U and know they are a good shop however I got a flat today and went to get a new road bike inner tube… They charged me $ 16 for a tube… Seriously? Twice the price. WOW!!! I wasn’t like it was a special tube either… Probably will not buy anything there and will check around for a FAIR price. Sorry couldn’t let this one go. It totally bugged me all night.

Great shop! I’ve mainly bought accessories and had tubes patched, chain fixed etc. on my commute, and they have been incredibly helpful and friendly. I’m looking into getting started road racing next year, and this will be where I will get my new bike. Couldn’t recommend highly enough!

Been here A few times to have my bike fixed and they are awesome Very fast and very fair that’s cool. It’s not a huge shop with tons of stuff to choose from but they’ve got good quality stuff and great people.

Worst experience from a bike shop! Won’t go back, waste of time and didn’t get to use my bike for a race. I brought my bike in having researched the problem on the manufacturer’s website and gave them the information. Basically it was put off for a week though they told me it would be ready in 3 days. They repeatedly told me that they would call with an update but never did. I had to call every couple days to check on it. Finally, the bike went to the manufacturer (which is what the website recommended). Even the shipment was put off for 2 days. (again, called to check if it was sent because of no call from them)
Finally got the bike back (again no call when it arrived). I picked it up from the shop and it had a chip in the fork. I’m not sure if the chip happened at the shop or at the manufacturer but it wasn’t there when I dropped it off. The issue I have with this, aside from damaging my bike, is that when I brought it to their attention, they basically told me it was superficial and my problem to deal with because they were too busy. (this involved going to an automotive shop and getting paint to fill in the chip.) Again, I called several times for an update over the course of 2 weeks and was put off.
A mistake like this only takes once to happen to keep me away from a place. Several problems with this shop and they all add up to inexcusable customer service.

I went in this morning to have tires and tubes put on my grandmas 40 year old Schwinn. These guys were super professional, friendly, and did a great job considering the old tube and tire were stuck on the bike rim. I’ll definitely continue to do business with these guys.

Cycle U is my go to shop to gear and repairs. I love their new location on the West Seattle bike trail, which is also my commute path. Their staff is honest about what bikes or gear will work for you and they don’t pressure you to buy anything. My son loves his HotRock and is waiting for upgrading to the 24″ hardrock. Thanks for leaving a bike pump at the storefront which has come in handy a couple times after a flat.

This is a great shop. They have helped me with a couple minor mid-​ride issues when I popped in, no charge, just good will. Besides being knowledgeable (which they are, and several of them race) this is exactly the type of service I expect out of a great neighborhood shop! (And something I have not seen with the other shops in the area…) Well done guys!
They are also active in the community, they sponsor races and a local bike team, get people engaged with volunteering for events, have shop rides and clinics, post (actually informative) information on their social outlets/​webpage. This is the exact type of store that we need to help support as cyclists.
They are a specialized dealer, so a lot I’d their in store product line-​up is specialized brand, but they can order just about anything, and I happen to like a lot of the specialized stuff. It’s quality. I’m sure they can work on any brand, though, so don’t let that stop you. Highly encourage folks to stop by for their biking needs.

One of my favorite shops in Seattle. Super convenient location, right on my commute home – it is very easy to stop in for an extra tube or some nutrition (or to get out of the rain). The staff are always friendly, and go the extra mile to help out. The store keeps a great selection of items, and has some darn nice bikes in stock, and the mechanics are top notch.
The other services are great as well. My wife and I both had bike fits done here by professional fitters, and for her it eased the pain she had been feeling from the saddle. For me, I found an optimal position to deliver consistent power while minimizing my chronic knee pain. I am looking forward to trying some of their trainer classes and coaching in the near future.

The Best. I took my bike into these guys to get the pedal replaced and about 3 mins later I was out. There are some nice people here and one of them fixed my pedal for free. I even offered him some money and he said no go enjoy it! I recommend these guys a lot!

These guys were great. My jogging stroller had a broken wheel. Despite trouble finding one they could use they kept trying and came up with a solution. They even found a way to keep it as a quick release wheel. I will go to them with any bike issues going forward. I was really impressed by their interest in helping me.

Once my go-​to bike shop of choice for repairs, now some repairs are not done properly and problems not corrected properly upon request. The last straw was when I requested a sturdy wheel and they gave me a weaker single-​wall wheel that I had to replace after 2 ½ months and 7 flat tires.
They do have a good selection of accessories & bicycles. So I will be happy to see some very nice people that work there, but I would suggest their repairs mainly for casual riders.

Fast forward to Jan 2014.
You know every once in a while you have a not so amazing experience transform itself into an amazing experience. I had a bit of a hiccup here over a biker tune up which was made right by the manager. I wasnt happy when it went down, and they knew it but rather than just ignore me and take the not best review, the manager took it upon himself to contact me and make it right and also to put in procedures to avoid these sorts of misunderstandings in the future. I applaud that. It really shows that they care.
Many months later we popped in for a pair of gloves for my wife. They didn’t have her size in stock and I didn’t want to buy the next size up not being sure which were the right ones. These guys went out of their way not knowing who I was and any previous issues we had and ordered them and held the others in case they were the right size for her so she could compare without even making me pay for it in advance. Well they came in and I was able to use the credit from the previous time on these for my wife. Win-​win. These guys will always get ALL of our bike work and I am happy that this was made right. You know they say the customer is king and I get it some customers are a PITA but this is one place that I do think really deserves your business AND your loyalty. They have both of mine for sure. I walked into Cycle University a few weeks ago with a self-​destructing rear wheel and a handful of questions on how to repair it. Reinout, the manager, greeted me from the repair workspace, and proceeded to give me the information and resources I needed to get myself back onto two fully functioning wheels. Reinout also invited further questions and helped get me situated with vastly brighter, safer bike lights, and he threw in a pair of pedals for free. I walked out of the shop 30 minutes after closing time with a huge stress taken off my mind and a solution in the works.
Next week I got my new wheel (not cheap, but reasonably priced and well made) on time, and he installed it for me quickly and as a part of the price that we’d already negotiated. Cycle U has given me some of the best bike store service and most helpful answers that I’ve ever received. I’m happy to take my business there for any kind of question or problem.

Reinout the manager should pride himself with exceptional customer service.
When I first came in, Reinout immediately introduced himself and asked me
if I have any questions. I asked him what bike will be the best for me, he showed
me one that I fell in love with. To make it even better he showed me a catalog of the
Specialized 2013 and asked me what color I want so he could build it. I picked the color I wanted and the rest is history.
I tested a few bikes but the one Reinout built was the one I bought.
It took me a week to decide and every time I go there I was never rushed into buying.
During that week, I get more information and knowledge everyday from Reinout. It’s an honor getting tips from a pro cyclist. Especially I’m new to the cycling world it’s very motivating.
All the staff here is pretty cool. I always stop by the shop when I bike and they’re always asking me how’s my bike.

I was on my first ride of the year, and had a minor issue with my brakes and no tools on me. I stopped at Cycle U., and Jeff had just finished teaching a class and the store was not yet open.
He not only adjusted my brake, but trued my rear wheel. I did not have my wallet on me, and he took my word on the honor system that I’d be back to spend more money. there. I definitely will! (I was even offered coffee while I was waiting.)

The people that work here are great — professional, helpful, friendly, and priced right. I ride my bike to work almost every day, but have no idea how to do basic things, such as change a tire, etc. Luckily, they are right on my route to/​from work. Based on the way they have treated me and my bike, I’d highly recommend them.
