BJ’s Affordable Hauling and LawnCare

Very pleased with their prompt arrival and efficient garden clean-​up. They did exactly what they said they would do. It was a pleasure to do business with them.

Called them in the morning. Showed up at noon and started right away. My yard had become a jungle and they cleared it and did a fairly good job really fast at a price that was a little more than I hoped for but fair. The job was fairly heavy handed and not really detail oriented but the quality was acceptable.
One of the principals was extremely foul mouthed. They had a young boy with them and I was very surprised to hear such language in front of a young boy but I let that slide.
When they were finished they called me out to review as they were cleaning up. The same guy was urinating on my house in the back yard. I live in a nice Wallingford neighborhood and he was potentially visible. I told him that this was bad and I did not appreciate it and he argued for some time as though to indicate that this was perfectly normal. He finally apologized but clearly did not see what he did wrong.
They won’t be back to my place.

About a year ago, we hired BJ’s to haul away some junk.
The job was done quickly and efficiently and for the estimated cost (very low).
BJ’s was also very careful to do the job without disturbing areas that they had to reach to do the hauling job.
I liked too my relationship with BJ and other employees.
I notice that BJ’s has been doing yard work for years for the folks across the street from us.

BJ’s Hauling and LawnCare just completed a job on my property. I was so surprised how quickly and efficiently they got the job done, plus their cleanup was great. As a woman homeowner I sometimes find contractors difficult to interface with. Not these guys. The crew was wonderful, responsive to what I hoped to accomplish, and did a superb job. Thank you, so much BJ’s!

This service is not affordable. BJ showed up on short notice during the weekend and charged an inflated price to haul a moderate amount of material. Cost for commercial vehicles to dump yard waste at the south transfer station is $ 20 for the first 380 lbs, don’t be fooled! If you are in a pinch and need something hauled asap, you’ll pay a premium with BJs. If you want affordable removal services, you should look elsewhere.

Our third time using BJ’s, they were helpful, courteous, and right on time! They carried all our stuff from our garage to their truck with good humor and a willingness to do a little extra — like roll up funky rugs and wait around for me to get a couple missing items. They moved everything safely. Leon serenaded me and his co-​workers the whole time. Made the experience amazingly pleasant.

Don’t expect a quality job or customer service. Our neighbor uses BJs to mow a shared lawn. Not only have I seen them «mowing» with weed eaters, but they dump the clippings in our yard-​waste bin (not our neighbor’s bin). Usually it isn’t a big deal because it tends to time with the city’s pickup time, but today it was filled to the brim. I called to let them know and the person who answered the phone agreed to come remedy it. When I tried to explain that this has been happening repeatedly, he immediately started screaming at me. We’ll be recommending that our neighbors select another service. (As an aside, it’s a little funny that a place with «hauling» in the title doesn’t actually haul away waste.)

I was on the last day of my move, and had a few things that needed to go to the dump. Exhausted from moving, I decided last-​minute I would rather pay someone to haul away my dump items. A quick Google search, I found BJ’s. I spoke to the owner, and he let me know he had some guys in my area and they could be to me within a couple of hours. He also let me know that their minimum charge is $ 75.
Less than an hour later, his workers called and were on their way. They were prompt, friendly, and fair w/​the quote — only the $ 75 minimum!
I will definitely be using BJ’s again, and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them!

I used these guys for lawn mowing, and while it started out ok, overall it wasn’t worth the hassle. On the plus side, they were able to come and start service almost immediately (next day). I had to negotiate the price.
After the first cut, I stayed with them for a few months. On several occasions I had to call to ask when they would come, since weeks would go by without service. It was always one excuse or another. Finally this month they told me I would only be billed for a partial month due to the issues, but the full bill arrived. I ended up getting in an argument with the owner, and cancelled service.
If you need a one-​time service these guys are probably fine. But I won’t bother with them for regular care, as it just isn’t worth the hassle.
EDIT: Ok, the shadiness factor just increased considerably when the owner stopped by my house demanding payment. He sent the bill on Sept 4^th, but stopped by to claim the bill was due on the 1^st?

We had a HORRIBLE experience getting some hauling done by BJ’s. We used them because they were able to come almost immediately but it was not worth the tradeoff in the least.
We were told that we would be quoted an amount when the workers arrived and if we accepted the quote, they could do the work right then. The quote seemed VERY high but we assumed that they knew something we didn’t about how long the work would take etc. We paid them the full amount in cash (they charge more for checks?) and only afterward did we realize that they had worked for less than an hour for a very large sum.
Knowing that we weren’t entitled to any of our money back after agreeing to the price, I called the business just to voice my feedback & with the small hope that the owner would be reasonable and committed to customer service, and refund me some portion of the outrageous fee. He was not only rude on the phone but actually quite aggressive.
THE OWNER THEN SHOWED UP UNANNOUNCED AT OUR HOUSE to continue the disagreement about the services provided, which I remained fairly reasonable about, not expecting anything other than my voice to be heard about how unfair we felt the exchange had been. He actually ended up getting in my face about this to the point that I felt intimidated and my partner had to ask him to leave our property.
In the end we overpaid (our fault) and had a terrible business/​emotional experience (clearly theirs). I wouldn’t recommend this place to ANYONE.

Asked them to come out and give me an estimate for a seasonal yard clean up (mow and weed) for my overgrown but very small bungalow lot. Quoted me $ 450 (!) — 8 hrs of work and hauling 6 – 8 loads of clippings. I don’t have a lawn mower and was desperate to get the yard cleaned up in anticipation of a party, but this was crazypants. I said I’d let them know (as in no way). They then gave me a song and dance about how they thought they’d be doing the job right away and now had no work for the morning (I’d called them the night before and only asked for an estimate).
I ended up getting on the phone with the boss and negotiating down several hundred dollars which was a royal pain and left a bad taste in my mouth. The work was fine but it only took them 1−½ hours to complete (no where close to 8) and I felt like I’d been had. If you have time and energy to negotiate I’m sure you could get a good deal, but I prefer that someone comes to me with a fair price to begin with.

These guys charged 2 – 3 times more than anyone out there and then once you cancel, they just keep coming back and sending you invoices. The guy who answers the phone is really nice and the workers are great, but ‘no more’ means ‘no more’. Sheesh!

Based on Unilocal reviews, I called BJ’s for an estimate on a one-​time lawn mowing job. Our lawn is fairly small (our lot is less than 3000sf) and usually takes me ~25 minutes with an electric lawn mower. BJ informed me that his guys would be out between 8:00 and 8:30am the next morning to give me an estimate. I agreed to stay home to speak with them about the estimate and, if agreed upon, authorize them to mow the lawn.
Next morning, I receive a call confirming that the guys will be there between 8:00 and 9:00am. I reply that the initial agreement was between 8:00 and 8:30 (I’d put it in my calendar while on the phone the day prior). He states that it was 8 to 9. I have a 9:30am meeting downtown, but think I should be able to make it if they show by 9.
9:00 – no show. 9:15 – I call and leave a voicemail. (At this point I’ve canceled my 9:30 meeting.) 9:20 – BJ calls, stating that his guys ‘misunderstood’ and went to their 2^nd job first. According to him this was the first time in 12 years this has happened. He offers to do the job for ½ price. I appreciate him trying to make it right and agree to have his employee estimate the job later in the day, then call me.
Around noon, his employee calls. He says that ‘we can do the job for $ 225.00″. At first I thought they either had the wrong house or didn’t understand the job, so I clarified «That’s just to mow the lawn – right?» He stated that, well, this is a first time appointment and the lawn is taller than normal; also that the job would be half off. That was still above what I’d expected to pay at regular price. We went back and forth a bit, but I ended the call stating «I don’t think we’re doing business together – I’ll mow my own lawn.» Which, thanks to a dry (enough) day, I did – in less than 30 minutes, even as long as it was. Shame nobody paid me $ 225 to do it (although I suppose I paid myself).
I appreciate BJ having owned up to the scheduling issue and trying to make things right; that’s why this isn’t a 1 star review. But their estimated price for my job was utterly outrageous. I cannot recommend them based on that experience as I would be worried about what other, larger jobs might cost.

These guys just quoted me $ 400 for nominal leaf-​pick-​up! My yard is pretty small, so I would normally pay my guy Juan (whom I pay $ 25/​hr — but is currently out of town) around $ 50 — $ 60 for the very same job. Eek! Methinks NOT!

I had a bunch of stuff I needed to clear out of my garage. And my lawn needed some clean-​up and care. Perfect match. I called BJ’s and they came out the very next day and did it all for a very reasonable price. They are great!

When these guy’s come out to your residence or place of business – pretend you’re at the flea market and HAGGLE. You’ll ask, «how much is it gonna cost me?» Guy no. 1 says, *Uh…well if you’re paying with check it will cost you x-​amt of dollars… BUT if you’re paying with cash, then it will cost x-​amt.* So the kicker is the *Uh* — there’s leeway there – throw out a dollar figure. Guy no. 1 will call his boss and see if it’s a go. I learned from my mistake (s) and am passing along the wisdom to you for free… that’s a deal! Hope YOU get the better deal with these guys.

These guys are awesome. They hauled away a bunch of debris for a very reasonable price. Fast, on time, and very nice. I plan to check out their lawn care services soon, as well.

These guys live in my neighborhood — I see their trucks all the time — and I called them out of desperation today to move a vintage bottle fridge out of a Uhaul truck into my yard — long story there. Anyway, this thing is monster — incredibly heavy and massive — and these guys bid the job fairly, showed up on time, were totally courteous, and got the job done. They did such an outstanding job that I wanted to spread the word. Plus, a lot of other folks said it couldn’t be done without heavy equipment. They not only managed, they were great.

In the world of garbage/​debris hauling, BJ’s is above the rest.
This world generally likes to fly by the seat of the pants; cash only, can’t get them to show up at a scheduled time, hard to pin down a real bid, just generally flaky all around.
But not BJ’s. They are courteous, on time, on budget, professional.
Damn right refreshing, I’d say. We used them for construction debris/​garbage haul, but I hear they also do basic lawn care.
