History

Established in 2007.

Master repair technician and founder Eli Kaufman brings over 12 years of experience and insight to all aspects of the company. Eli has formally studied saxophone for 25 years and accordion for 14. He earned certification for Musical Instrument Repair Technician from Renton Technical College in 2000 and worked in several respected shops before opening his own business.

Eli grew up playing the saxophone and studied performance at the renowned jazz program at William Paterson College in New Jersey. He inherited his grandfather’s accordion in 1998 and quickly took to studying it. In 2005 Eli formed the accordion quartet, Hell’s Bellows, and continues to work with the ensemble today. He studied musical instrument repair at Renton Technical College and with his great uncle, accordionist, Bob Lechko, in Minneapolis. He worked under Brad Wherry at Northwest Winds and under Steve Nelson at Mills Music.

I went in today to have a courtesy appointment to have Eli take a look at my saxophone. Watching him handle the instrument and diagnose it, it was clear that he has both passion and attention to detail. The conversation showed him to be knowledgeable and a problem solver with lots of ideas for options and reasons. I found him kind, understanding and quick-​thinking.

Eli was beyond amazing. He took the time to examine my Alto Sax that caused me 4 trips and almost $ 250.00 at Oberloh Woodwind and Brass Works and the Sax was still not functioning as before. I was treated in a very professional manner. Eli looked at the Sax and advise me that the cork needs replacement soon and he un-​did some of the tightening done by the folks at Oberloh. RESULTS? A happy sax player and I practice more and more because it’s been a joy to play the instrument I love. Thank you very much, Eli! See you next time!

Quality is SO important when it comes to maintaining a great instrument. About a year ago, I bought a used Yamaha YCL-​650 clarinet. I used it for a while with my band, but found something lacking in it’s response and felt that the pads needed to be redone. I spoke to Eli at Bell & Reed, and he was very prompt and professional with his response. We set up a meeting at his workshop, and had a detailed conversation about what I wanted and what he saw just from first glance. He is truly an artist, and it shows in the quality of his work. A while after I got my clarinet back from him, a pad became loose. I emailed Eli about it, and he was ready to look at it immediately. He explained that he was conservative with the heat that he had used on the metal above the pad in order to protect the coating, and he quickly fixed the pad in front of me. It’s been solid since, and the clarinet sounds fantastic. I would HIGHLY recommend Eli to any of my friends. If you truly love your instrument, and want someone to take really good care of it, look no further than Eli at Bell & Reed.

I should have written this review a couple years ago. Eli repaired my old alto saxophone for my daughter to use. He was thorough but fast, affordable, and very pleasant to deal with. His workshop is a sight to behold, too! It’s nice to see someone so dedicated to his craft.

I’m a professional accordionist. I depend on my instrument. I know most accordion repair people in the Northwest and the one I trust the most with my instrument is Eli at Bell & Reed. Eli is a craftsman in the truest sense of the word. He was trained in the traditional style of tuning which does not induce metal fatigue in the reeds. Eli is always happy to share information about his repairs which is a sign of integrity in repair. I can’t recommend him highly enough. He’s the best.

Eli is a swell fella and an honest repairer. I brought my ancient Hohner accordion to him and he was able to quickly un-​stick the old reeds inside. He also re-​corked a wooden b-​flat clarinet I have, along with replacing the pads on a few keys that needed replacing. He is reasonable and a very nice man, and would be my first choice for repairs in the future.

The first time I saw Eli, he was playing accordion, some of which was his own compositions, and I was blown away by the precision and impeccable taste. I thought, «this is a guy who puts a lot of care and loving attention into what he’s doing». Exactly what you’d want in a technician. I have not needed repairs on my accordion yet, but then again, Eli was the one who helped me select it several years ago, and taught me a lot about accordions and taking care of the instrument in the process.

You want to meet Eli. If you don’t already have a sax, clarinet or accordion (or other reed instrument), I urge you to buy one and create the opportunity to meet him. I looked up Eli after hearing him play in an ensemble, and I’ve hired him to repair and to teach. I could not be more pleased with his work. Spending time with Eli is invaluable.

When my dad decided to buy me an accordion for Christmas we got Eli’s name from a friend. My dad was thrilled with the whole experience, I am thrilled with my accordion, and I have been in several times to see Eli – first to get some basic tips (he kindly adjusted my straps, punching new holes and trimming things until they were perfect), and later to have him look at a second accordion I got off eBay (it opened right up when he played it, and it turns out it only needed one very minor repair!). He is knowledgable, kind, prompt, and courteous. I’m tempted to take up the clarinet, just so I have an excuse to see him more often!

Eli at Bell & Reed has been repairing and overhauling my alto saxophone, clarinet — and multiple accordions — for over 5 years, and it’s been an exceptional relationship. Eli works carefully, finds problems quickly, and doesn’t miss anything that might compromise an instrument’s overall tone or mechanical play. He is usually available at short notice (which is usually when repairs are urgently needed!), and always does a thorough job. He also shares ideas on how a person can better keep their instrument out of the repair shop! Highly recommended.
