A & S Rent-A-Car

I liked the fact that this is a family owned business — however… we rented a 15 passenger van to drive around the Olympic Peninsula that was very sub-​par mechanically. It was a ’98 with 117K+ hard miles on it. I don’t think this van was the one quoted to my sister in law when she booked the reservation — she was told a 2002 12 passenger van was available. The check engine light was already on when we rented it — I was assured that this had been checked out and was not an issue (that should have been my first clue…) Every single tire was a different make and model — a couple showed signs of age/​exposure cracking and the van had a prounounced «thunk» everytime it was shifted into reverse, a vibration/​thumping noise like an out of balance tire or drive line problem. I went to roll a window down and the power window switch fell into its hole… all of the window latches on the operable passenger windows were loose. At the very end of our trip as we were waiting on the fairy — the brakes started grinding — metal on metal contact — there were no brake pads left.
We made the trip — but it was uncomfortable to me feeling like this van could break down and ruin the vacation at any minute. I feel like we paid a fair price at $ 125.00 a day and realistically — we couldn’t find a vehicle big enough for 7 people and luggage anywhere else — but I would definitely check out the vehicle much closer if I was to ever rent from A & S again.
