History
Established in 1955.
Monterey Peninsula Volunteer Services, Inc. (MPVS) evolved from the American Women’s Volunteer Services, a nationwide organization directing its assistance to wartime (WorldWarII) projects. After the war they looked for other ways to be of help. By 1952 most of the AWVS Thrift Shop proceeds were directed toward projects on the Monterey Peninsula, the earliest donations were given to the Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) and the Family Service. When the AWVS withdrew from the state, MPVS began a thrift shop with the same goal of giving grants to local non-profits. After renting various locations, in 1995 MPVS was able to build its own shop at 655 Broadway due to a legacy from the estate of Helen Burton.
Today, MPVS is still a group of hard working women who give of their time and energy to help people on the Greater Monterey Peninsula. Since 1955 over 3 million dollars has been given to local non-profit groups.
