The Moderne

Potentially nice apartments but beware! The hard wood floors are nice to have in your apartment, but if there’s an apartment above you, you will hear every step and every little thing that drops on the floor because the wood makes everything so loud. I moved in and had a nonfunctioning appliance and its been almost a month and they are still «awaiting parts» to get it repaired. Every time I ask about it they say they will call the company and «follow up» but then not once have I gotten an update from them. Every time they pass the buck and say they’re going to get right on it but then never call you and tell you what they found out. They called me a week after I moved in and said they made an error on calculating my move in amount and I owed them an extra $ 100 dollars. Packages are delivered to the main office and management just sent out an email saying they are getting too many packages and they may start not accepting any more (the apartment complex isn’t even full yet). For $ 1800/​month in rent I would expect better.

When I first moved in to this place in July 2015 (I moved here from Michigan), I thought I had found the best possible place to live. I chose to live here for many reasons. 1, it was brand new. I therefore assumed I would not be having to deal with maintenance issues. 2, it was advertised as a controlled access/​secure facility. I therefore felt like I was going to be living in a safe place. While the facility looks beautiful, and the units themselves are gorgeous, living here has been anything but a good experience. While I am the first person to live in my apartment, I have not had a working dishwasher in the 5.5 months I have lived here. I have asked for it to be fixed 4 times to no avail. None of my dishes ever get clean in the dishwasher. I was told a week ago that the warranty company would be at my place that day; I have yet to see them. My wash machine has already broken down and trapped a brand-​new expensive set of sheets in a basin full of water. It broke down only 10 minutes after the office closed, but they still refused to help me that night, and made me wait until the next morning. Because of sitting in detergent filled water for the whole night, my new sheets now have streak stains on them.
The «security» of this place? Yeah, right. There is only a parking arm that barricades the entrance to the underground parking garage, rather than a gate. That arm was up more than down due to not working more often than not throughout my first 4 months here. Well, about 6 weeks ago, I actually got trapped in the garage at 5 a.m. on Sunday morning on my way to work because the arm would not go up! The complex failed to put the after hours voice mail message on, so I could not reach emergency maintenance for help and had to call the Scottsdale police. Ever since, the security arm has been sitting on the ground. 6 weeks, and it has not been fixed. During this time, my Trek bike, which was locked up in the parking garage, was stolen. I have since found out that several other people have had their bike stolen from this place. The complex has not bothered to put up any signs or send residents an email to alert the community that bike theft is a consistent problem here at the Moderne. To make matters worse, our main gate to the community, which is to always be closed when the leasing office is closed, has been open ²⁴⁄₇ for the past week.
I went to the leasing office a month ago to voice my concerns. I was told by the complex manager to send her an email detailing my concerns and to state what my requests are. She stated she would then forward my concerns to corporate. I did as she asked that day, and have heard absolutely nothing back from her, even though she promised she would be following up both with corporate and with me. The manager told me to my face that the crossing arm is «not much of a deterrent, as people can walk around it to get down into the garage.» Really? Why not then build a gate instead? Why not always keep the main gate to the complex closed and let people use the call box to be buzzed in?
I also came home from work one day with lots of groceries, only to see the elevator was broken. I have a bad back and knees, so carrying multiple loads of groceries up 4 flights of stairs was not pleasant! It took at least a couple days for the elevator to be back in service.
This place unfortunately does not seem to care at all about the residents, which is unfortunate because this place is still only about 70% full after being open for a year or more. If things do not change around here, or if effort is not made to make sure residents are getting what they pay for, I will definitely be leaving as soon as my lease is up. The staff turn over here is huge; it seems there are new people working the leasing office every other week. This place is definitely focused on filling units to get people’s money, but once that lease is signed, they do not care about you. I have a feeling a lot of people are going to to be leaving once their lease is up. It is too bad, because this could be a very nice place if they would bother to maintain it and show some care and concern for the people who pay too much to live here. I do think this place is overpriced for what we get and our location, which is pretty secluded/​farther away from the main part of Old Town. $ 1300+ for 669 sq feet is a lot, and if I am going to pay that, I expect for the place to be maintained and for concern to be shown that peoples’ stuff is getting stolen.
PS– there is someone who is always smoking pot here. The first floor of the building attached to the leasing office always reeks of pot, and my friends on the 4^th floor can smell it in their apartment, as it leaks through the vents.
My advice– avoid the Moderne and all JLB partners properties.
I will take this review down if the property rectifies this situation with me. As long as this post remains, it means they have not fixed these issues.

They fixed everything that was wrong with the parking garage, and are now even towing vehicles that are not street legal. The Moderne seems to be on top on the complaints they are getting– they’ve fixed many of my concerns.

I was one of the original tenants who moved in this past January and while I would have happily given the property a big thumbs up back then, now… Not so much.
If heaven forbid, you are north of say, 40 on the age scale, good luck finding a spot by the pool on the weekends. You won’t. This place is over run with obnoxious 20-​somethings on the weekends who invite friends over and basically take over the pool areas. It’s like a frat house. I’m all for a party, but when I, who am paying $ 1500+ per month for a place here can’t use the facilities because people who don’t even live here are helping themselves, it gets a little frustrating.
Also, the original staff who were first in place (and fantastic to work with) just this past January are now all gone. Front office turnover seems very high here and the current staff is less than friendly in my opinion.
The units themselves are topnotch and absolutely beautiful… I love my space. It’s just a shame I no longer feel welcome throughout the rest of the facilities. If you’re under 30, this is your place. The rest of us be damned. I wont be re-​upping.

I have been a resident at the Modern since the end of april 2015 .i can honestly say from the day i walked in to check them out till now the staff and management has been outstanding. Christy, Anna, Nancy, and Nicolette always have a cherry smile and all the time in the world to talk with me on any given day. Elliot is such a professional and on the ball when it comes to fixing something in my apartment .5 stars to the maintence department and 5 stars to the staff greeting everyone in front ! THE Modern is a beautiful and relaxing place anyone could call home .Top notch, wonderful property, great location, close to everything yet quiet .I give it a 10 all the way around,

I moved in a few weeks ago… and so far I love it here. I looked at this place originally because it had a dog park (large and well taken care of) and is extremely pet friendly, but in reality it is so much more than that. The pool is awesome and the people are all super friendly. Although I was originally promised a different type of unit by someone who was no longer working in the leasing office by the time I moved in, unforeseen circumstances didn’t allow it, and Kristi did everything she could to make sure we found a unit I thought would work for me. Although the place has some «young people with money», there are also older people here that seem to really like it. I also think there are plenty of these «young» people, myself included, that DON’T stay up late partying, and although some people may be a little loud on weekends (naturally), I personally have asked my neighbors nicely to quiet down, and they did. It is still an apartment and it is certainly a young person’s type of place, but that isn’t something that is kept secret from the get go. Also, I’m not sure what having a white parking garage has to do with not crashing into walls, but I will admit some people do fly through. I think that has more to do with the «old, successful, rolling in a Bentley» type drivers who think they run the road…(just kidding). If you just take your time and pay attention, as a proper driver should, the parking garage is not a problem. Bottom line, I think anywhere you go, people will be human, and no place is perfect, but these guys are doing their best. Christian is a total sweetheart, and the rest of the staff have been very helpful. You just have to communicate with them. This is all coming from someone who had to break a lease at another «luxury» community because it truly WAS a horrible experience, so I am no stranger to these frustrations! You can’t please everyone, but it’s worth it to look at this place.

This isn’t far the Most luxurious lease option in old town if your not ready to buy. If you have the money, and not ready to buy yet, this apartment complex is the newest and most updated. Stainless steel appliances, w/​d in units, granite counters, garage or underground parking, etc. I know I sound like a real estate agent but this is where I want to live and I like nice things!
Price ranges from $ 1,450 — $ 3,800 depending on # of rooms, which floor, view, and anything else you can think of that property management will squeeze money from. With that said, this is still the absolute nicest and newest place to be in old town Scottsdale. Again, if your willing to spend this kind of money, either you are looking for a house to buy or you are just temporarily in Scottsdale. You can buy a $ 450,000 home for these rental prices. So keep that in mind. If you want the same opulence and luxury this place has to offer in a home you will be looking at price ranges near $ 650,000.
People and tenants here seemed nice yet uppity. Kind of like being at the Ritz or Four Seasons without the old people and families that are on vacation. Young well off 20 and 30 something’s.
If this is your style go take a look. Well worth it if you can justify the price.”

I can honestly say that when I happened upon this property I felt like I had hit the jackpot. It has everything I wanted and more… The community is so new that the apartment I am moving into has never been lived in, and it boasts granite counter tops, a spacious floor plan, and even its own dog park for my pom. It really was the perfect fit for me, and although I wasn’t thrilled about moving in general, now I’m genuinely looking forward to it.
Casey and the staff are truly top notch as well. I highly recommend living here if you are accustomed to a nice lifestyle, and expect the best on all levels.

I have been a resident of The Moderne for about 6 weeks and it is fantastic. The entire complex is first class and brand new. The apartments feel like upscale condos and the location can’t be beat.
Additionally the staff has been super cool and helpful with every thing from leasing to move-​in. If you are looking for a high-​end apartment in a prime location in Old Town Scottsdale this is the spot!
