103.9 The EDGE

WOW!!! You are back! Hopefully you burned the 80’s crap and I can now add you back as my #1 station again. I only clicked on you again by accident in my boyfriends truck and at first I was confused-​was this my old fave 103.9 back from the dead-​YES! with the very best music– PLEASE I plead with you stay strong and be who you are– the best music station out there with Alternative-​and I was happy with some other music in there too-​BUT no 80’s crap at ALL!

Well, since it is too depressing to listen to any media outlet right now, I actually have no idea what this station offers except this: Third Thursdays (4209 North Craftsman Court, Old Town Scottsdale, AZ 85 251, between Dos Gringos and Upper Deck,

I was informed of this event by my friend, Armando, and frankly, I can’t believe there isn’t more excitement around it. The show I saw last night (Meiko) was TERRIFIC! It was friggin’ cold, but it was terrific!
I am definitely keeping track of this for future events!

They lost me as a listener when they ditched Chuck & Vincent’s «Morning Ritual» several months ago (and apparently lots of other listeners, too.) That Adam Corolla guy is boring as hell. And they replay «Best Of» on the weekends, so no escaping him any mornings. Their musical repertoire is seriously on auto-pilot…the same predictable Red Hot Chili Pepper and Sublime and Foo Fighters songs over and over again. Boring. (And, no, why would I get Sirius/​XM to hear the same boring alt crap I can hear for free?) Any time there’s a new song, I never hear it ever again. Everything The Edge 103.9 should be playing, Jonathon L already gets to months in advance (*years* in advance, in some cases) on his Lopsided World of L across the dial.

What a piece of sh*t show. Good for advertisers, yes. Horrible for listeners. Too bad they got rid of one of the best morning shows around.

Chuck Powell. Need I say more?
It’s not every day I find a morning radio show I like — The Morning Ritual. It’s not every day I prefer to listen to the radio over my iPod. But, each morning as I commute into work, I turn to The Edge to listen to Chuck Powell and his cohorts. I listen to the News Show Most Likely to be Sued. I listen to Last Character Standing. I listen to That Guy parodies. And I laugh. It’s a great way to start my day.
As for the music, it’s modern rock/​alternative. While they sometimes play the likes of Jack Johnson, Death Cab for Cutie, Postal Service and Mazzy Star, they mostly play the «what’s hot now» from bands like Finger 11, 30 Seconds to Mars and Say Anything.
Every year The Edge has EdgeFest with locally and nationally known bands. They also support certain local concerts, including 2007’s Incubus tour. On top of that, they put on a holiday show called How The Edge Stole Christmas. They also recently partnered with Tempe Marketplace to bring Third Thursdays to The District. This station does alot to promote music here in Phoenix. I can definitely respect that.
What’s more, there’s the lunch hour with Robin Nash who hosts «90 minutes of the 90s» to remind you of your teen angst years, or those years in which you were in college. Nirvana. Pearl Jam. Silverchair. Stabbing Westward. Bush. It’s all good.
There’s even 90s Weekend, in which you hear nothing but 90s music. It’s really great, especially if you’re out and about, running errands or traveling across the Valley. Also, there’s the «5 o’clock request riot» where you can call in or go online to request a song. Sure beats being stuck in grid lock listening to John Tesh! (Nothing against John Tesh, of course.)
I’d give this station 4 stars, since without the morning show and the 90s playlists, I wouldn’t really have much motivation to listen. Sure, I sometimes enjoy hearing The Bravery, Red Hot Chili Peppers or Foo Fighters, but it’s just not my number one choice for music genre.
Of course, if I’m telling the truth, I listen to this station about 25% when I’m in the car. Other times, I’m tuned in to 100.7 Classic Rock (25%), Energy 101.1 (5%) or NPR (5%). Of course, there’s my iPod, which gets 40% of my listening time. I guess that makes me my own favorite DJ!
