Unclaimed Baggage Center

It is like shopping at a Goodwill store except that all of this stuff was the stuff people did not want to throw away. We have bought a number of very nice luggage pieces and a cell phone. They have a bunch of totally new stuff that comes from lost cargo shipments. We took the kids (all grown ups) at Christmas and they had a great time.

Meh. I drove two hours to visit this store which is very much like a Goodwill, but with too-​high prices. I can’t say that I found anything special. The store was smaller than I expected. I would maybe visit again if I were in the area, but I really can’t get past the fact that the items are used, yet priced higher than the same new items are at Amazon and outlet stores. Also annoying is that all of the items are clearly not actually from unclaimed luggage.

I have heard about this place and passed the town many times and finally went there with my daughter. We were there on Monday about 2 PM and left around 5… much longer than I would have stayed LOL. They have lots of off street parking, a small snack shop and restrooms of course. There are actually two buildings near each other and the smaller one has all toddler and infant stuff from hats and coats to toys and diapers. Some of the clothes are actually new with tags still on them. The main store has everything from high end jewelry and clothes to household goods, sporting goods, electronics, and books. Pretty much anything that can get lost when you check it on a plane.
My daughter in her mid-​twenties loves the place and thinks the deals are awesome. Now as with many millennials, the name on the clothes is more important than the price; and the name brands appear to be a good price.. That said the place has lots of name brand clothes I think. For example she found a winter «North Face» coat for $ 60 used but looked new… I thought it was too much so she showed me the same coat was $ 160 on line. I struggle with those prices because it is «use»… Oh well. That said they have lots of clothes and I saw shirts and pants for 5 — 15 dollars. However the store knows the value of the merchandise and I while you will find fair prices, one half off or more, I don’t think you will find a «steal» but will find a good deal, if that makes sense.
The store is divided by types, men, women, jewelry etc. Found some nice turquoise jewelry in that department. I asked the sales person about a $ 3,000 dollar diamond tennis bracelet. How would I know it is real and why would I pay $ 3K for something here? She explained that all diamond and expensive jewelry (in the glass case) gets a formal appraisal from a jeweler and the buyer gets a copy. She said they sell the jewelry for 40 — 60% off the appraised value. Why someone would pack in there luggage a 6,000 dollar piece of jewelry is beyond me.
It is like and upscale indoor flea market or goodwill store. So many clothes you have to really pick through them. They have carts and fitting rooms to try on clothes and shoes. I think it is definitely worth a visit and I give it a 3+.

Neat store… there are deals to be found… check out the books… prices of luggage very good… don’t go expecting yard sale or goodwill prices. Lots of coats, etc. All the staff was very friendly… read reviews that said staff was rude… they were untrue… everyone was great, quick checkout, etc.

We visited the Unclaimed Baggage Center years ago when it was just getting up and going. It has changed a great deal. At that time it was piles of stuff you sorted through. It has definitely grown and definitely changed.
I was amazed at the expensive articles folks check in their luggage. Some of the jewelry was priced in the thousands and some of the old laptops and cameras were tagged for several hundred dollars.
There were lots of suitcases for sale. Some were on clearance and some of the better known brands were priced accordingly. Most weren’t what you’d consider real cheap or super bargains.
I thought a lot of their items were over priced considering the items were used. I do disagree with some other reviewers who compared the Unclaimed Baggage Center to a TJ Maxx. Items sold at TJ Maxx are new and not used.
It was interesting but not so sure I’d make a special trip again to stop.

My wife & I are huge fans of this place. They have tons of stuff and if you spend just a little time going through everything you can find a diamond in the rough. Anytime we pass through town we hit this place up. From clothes, luggage, electronics, jewelry, you would be surprised at what all people leave behind. So be sure you make a trip to Scottsboro and check this place out. Very cool.

This place is really far out of the way, so I was expecting it to be more of a deal, but as many others have said, it’s basically a T.J. Maxx.
It’s huge, and has lots of stuff, but all the things that I looked at were on par pricewise with a discount store or things being on sale, except that this stuff is used. They had things like stacks of iPad 2s for $ 125-​$ 225, which I can buy on Craigslist all day, or BDU pants for $ 20 which can be bought at an Army Surplus store for $ 15.
Save yourself the trip and just go to a Goodwill.

This place is amazing! I literally come here and leave amazed every time! Check out the electronics for blue tooth headsets or hit up the etc portion building for some of the last chance items!

It is big and clean which is why I gave it 2 stars. Other wise it is not really any different than any other second hand store/​Goodwill. Obviously not everything comes from «unclaimed baggage» as there are many new with tags repeats.
Some prices are high and some are not.

So um why are people so upset?
I really enjoyed my visits here. I always leave with a great find. Sure you’ve got to dig a little sometimes, but $ 400 Coach prescription frames for $ 35? I’ll take those thank you very much. Michael Kors Sundress, $ 180 for $ 15? Yes, please and thank you. BCBG Max Azaria Dress, $ 215 for $ 30? Yes, once again.
Maybe there are good weeks and not so great weeks there, but I’ve never left unhappy.
My only complaint is that they need to redo the carpets in there… makes the place feel dingy… and in the bargain basement, please keep it a little neater. I know people go crazy in there, but please have someone checking it out every hour or so to make sure it’s semi-​decent.

The low average review rating for the Unclaimed Baggage Center is just plain baffling to me!
Considering that Alabama isn’t the most exciting tourist destinations in the United States, I will say that UBC is one of its shining stars. Even if you don’t purchase anything, it is still an adventure going through all the misfit items someone left behind. I spent at least an hour reading about all the ‘museum’ quality items they had displayed on the walls. My favorite was the Tibetan dung (horn), as I personally carried two back to the US from Bhutan… and I have absolutely no idea how you leave behind a horn that’s taller than most adults.
My boyfriend and I decided to take a day trip from Nashville to Alabama (2 hours drive time) just to go to UBC. We didn’t really have a ‘shopping list’, but I thought I would end up with some electronics.
The day we visited was supposedly one of the busiest days of the year as it was their annual ski sale. It was busy, but not to the point that I felt claustrophobic. Other reviewers complained about the crowds. Kind of to be expected? Honestly the place is so large in scale, it helps spread people out. I mean… it’s a store in Alabama… not a Best Buy in Chicago the day after Thanksgiving.
The amount of stuff in the store is a little overwhelming. You have to be willing to dig. What did my hours of digging get me? A brand new derby hat for the Kentucky Derby. The hat is around $ 150 retail and I bought it for $ 40. It’s in perfect shape. I also bought a lightly used long Cole Haan coat with the thermore (aka super warm). Paid $ 60, retail $ 350. I get a compliment on this coat every time I wear it out. I also bought a crazy poncho that looks like it maybe from Peru for $ 15. It’s for Halloween 2015. :)
So that brings me to a very interesting tid bit about UBC… The International clothing section will rock your dress-​up party socks off! Belly dancer outfit? Check! Kimono? Check! And it’s not the chintzy replica stuff… it’s the real, real deal.
So as you can tell, I ended up with zero electronics as I originally thought I would walk out with. Honestly, there were some good deals, but for me I need the piece of mind that I can return something if there is an issue. Also, for something like an expensive camera I want to know how it was handled by the previous owner.
Other things that made UBC a great day trip was the fact there’s a small food/​beverage counter inside. It was good to have a re-​fuel option and have an area to sit down in. The bathrooms were spacious and very clean. The staff was friendly.
My boyfriend and I have decided to make semi-​annual trips down based on a ⁵⁰⁄₅₀ split of novelty and bargain hunting interest.
P. S. My boyfriend purchased 6 fleece jackets that day. Is there rehab for this sort of obsession? But he would like me to mention he also bought some books… like that makes it any better. ;)

You can buy almost everything I looked for a similar price At Walmart or online. The exception is the misc electronics table. They have no idea what a lot of the tuff is so you can find a gem if you do long enough.

I give ‘em a three and a half, overall. I think the average rating is low because people’s expectations were too high. The place has been overhyped.
Don’t expect to find undiscovered treasures at at steal. However, if you’re happy to shop for second-​hand items at perhaps 25% of the retail price of new ones, you can likely find some useful things here.
There is a second building, and it has a basement also.
This store has gotten bigger and better over the years, so I am rounding the star rating up.
As is the case anywhere, if you want a bigger ticket item that appears overpriced, ask a manager if you can get a discount. It doesn’t hurt to ask, and you might get another 25% off.

This place is ok. If the stuff was new I would compare it to TJ Maxx but unfortunately this stuff is used. Which is worse. The prices for clothes, shoes, headphones, and other electronics are a rip off. You can get the same stuff at Burlington for the same price. And Burlington has the stuff brand new (well never even worn or used).
They have used beauty products there which kinda freaked me out.
The only good thing is that they have $ 10 portable DVD players and cameras. The DVD players come with an AC charger while the cameras do not. Some of these are really expensive products. No returns on this so might as well buy two to make sure one works. Also there is a 3 item limit for these.
Finally, they did have some decent price sweat shirts. Now these were cool because you could find sweat shirts from any place in the country. So I bought one to act like I was cool and went to Vegas.

Ah, a bit of a letdown, for sure. We ended up only purchasing a pair of sunglasses for each other, $ 5 a piece. Couldn’t find any GPS’s, and really didn’t see any great bargains on items. A lot of the merchandise was stuff I’d never be caught dead wearing, to be honest. Interesting store, but not worth driving all the way down from Tennessee to.

I went here with a couple of my girlfriends for a quick weekend trip thinking we’d take in the novelty of the place in a few hours and be done with it. Seven hours later, we were practically counting down the minutes until they closed trying to see what else we could find.
The thing about this store is that it’s not dirt cheap, but it’s definitely cheap. I got two 550 fill (good quality) down jackets for $ 25 apiece. These jackets were gently worn. One retailed for $ 175, the other $ 120. I found a Cole Haan men’s wool overcoat that retails for $ 350 for $ 50. Incredible deals on high quality items. I got a pair of Clarks maryjanes and a pair of Columbia hiking boots, both showing almost no wear for $ 12 apiece. Again, each of these items are super high quality and retailed for around $ 80. I got a LeSportSac messenger bag for $ 10.
My friend found PRESCRIPTION sunglasses for $ 30.
I think the electronics are WAY overpriced, but you can find some really great deals in apparel.
If you are road tripping more than a couple of hours to get here, it’s not worth it. We drove in from Atlanta and had a great time and got some really great items.

So… I’ve heard all the raving and I did some research on the name. Apparently there’s a lot of media stories on this place. While visiting my boyfriend’s family for X-​mas, I figured I’ll pay this place a visit. Before visiting, I looked it up on Unilocal of course. After reading so many negative reviews, we decided not to go. Somehow when we got a little closer, we figured why the hell not.
We walked around, mostly clothes here… NOT that interested in wearing used clothes. Although their electronic section has some amazing deals! I found a Nikon J1 with 2 lens for only $ 300. It’s a total steal, i asked them to put it on hold for me and I went straight to the glasses displays. While I was walking up to the display area a pair of Jimmy Choo sun glasses caught my eye. It didn’t really fit my face frame so I looked around some more. I found 2 pairs of Carrera sun glasses for $ 40 each! One for me and another for my boyfriend. I also found another pair of Marc Jacob shades for the same price. I paid a little over $ 100 for all 3 and they had no signs of ever being used.
I proceed to walk toward the display area and this beautiful Yves Saint Laurent — Lutitia clutch caught my eye. I quickly asked the clerk if i could see it, at the same time I went on YSL’s site to check their prices. The price on the website was $ 995 and it was going for $ 400. I wanted it so bad and see it as a steal because it’s actually NEW, never been used with original tag STILL ATTACHED! I requested to talk to the manager and after 15 mins she decided to give me an extra 25% off on an already amazing price. My boyfriend decided to get it for me as an extra Xmas present. We ended up getting it for $ 299. The only crazy thing is Alabama tax is 9% and we’re so used to paying 5%, other than that I find the price for a timeless classic YSL clutch to be a great deal.
Yes, most things are expensive here for used items BUT if you are a fashionista and know all your high end brand names then you know what is a good deal. I ended up leaving with a beautiful clutch and 3 pairs of designer glasses with a smile on my face and totally forgot about the Nikon J1 that i had put on hold.
