The plants and I, well, we don’t get along. I’m the place they go to die, and that’s about it. I pinned this thing on Pinterest a few weeks ago about having a grey thumb and my dwelling being like a hospice for plants going to their final resting place, which is a fairly accurate portrayal of what happens at my apartment whenever there’s greenery involved, but my partner is pretty into growing stuff in our makeshift potted garden, and I think it’s pretty cool, although I worry that even my proximity might kill the precious planties… that or the cats insistence on chewing them. We came here to peruse strictly the veggies and herbs since flowers aren’t really our thing. We found the selection here to be pretty prime with not only flora and fauna but accessories for all your gardening needs, including the cutest little cat statues and a whole section of different garden gnomes along with more children’s gardening supplies then I even knew existed. We found the plants here to be more expensive than your local grocer or Meijer or wherever, but they were heartier, more mature and less likely to die the first time your cat chews them — so it’s a trade off. For myself, I’d have to go with Random Acres so the survival rate is just that much higher.

Well I don’t know about you, but Mother’s Day is the perfect time to buy potted plants and hanging baskets for the mothers in your life. This year, that is exactly what we did. My hubby and I were trying to decide on what were going to get for the moms this year and he came up with the idea to get everyone potted plants. We could certainly go to Costco or Home Depot and get these but why not support our neighborhood florist this year? We pulled up to the florist on a Saturday morning to find the place packed. I noticed the staff helping customers load up their cars with their gorgeous purchases. We selected a variety of hanging baskets and might I say they were absolutely gorgeous. Full and in bloom. Beautiful baskets. Unfortunately, they were $ 35 a piece. They are not the most economical place to purchase flowers but they are certainly nice. They do offer a discount of $ 2.50 per basket when purchasing more than 2 baskets and they offer a discount of $ 5 per basket when purchasing more than 5 baskets at a time. If you have the money to spend, they really do have an excellent selection and the recipients of your purchases will be more than pleased!

We were out in Schaumburg the other day and saw this place along the road. While I had no particular needs for the garden, I had to stop in and see it. As a gardening enthusiast, I was stunned by the beautiful hanging baskets they had at this place. I’ve seen Pesche’s and Lurvey’s on many occasions, but this place topped them in the hanging basket selection. Every one of them — perfect, just the right balance of colors and fullness. Not cheap though, most going for around $ 30 apiece. Beautiful, multicolored mini petunias, plus hanging hooks, posts and trellises. We were close to buying a wrought iron, 4-hook plant hanging display, and I suspect I may have gotten one if I had taken my van. At about $ 200, it would have been quite an impulse buy for a garden item. Random Acres has little in terms of statues and other yard ornaments, but they do have a decent selection of vegetables and herbs too. I also had my eye on a creeping thyme plant, but I was not sure where I would put it. I ended up buying nothing, but I left the place impressed. The staff was friendly, the place was well organized, and I might still be back for the 4-hook plant hanger in the future. Check out some of the hanging basket photos!
