Half Price Books

I was so pleasantly surprised by this place! I was thinking that it couldn’t be that great, but it was! I found a bunch of great classics for the kids at much better prices than anywhere else I’ve been. I do think that some things could be marked down even more, but that was mostly for new or very slightly used items, so I guess they can get more for those items. I loved looking in the vintage /​classic section. So fun! The old books have that awesome old book smell! Most of the workers were pretty helpful too. One was not as friendly as the others, but everyone has a bad day sometimes! Overall, this was a great experience and I will be back often.

How much do I love Half Price Books? So, so much. I have gotten well over a hundred books for my classroom library since discovering HPB last summer. If you shop in the clearance section you can find books as cheap as 50 cents! They have a 10% teacher discount so there is no better place for a teacher to stock up on books. Most of the books are in very good condition. I’ve only ever purchased children’s books so I can’t attest to the quality and/​or price of adult books, records, or DVDs.
They will buy records, books, and whatnot from customers. I sold them some reeeeeally old stuff and I was surprised that they gave me any money at all! Some things they won’t buy but they will dispose of them properly for you if you want. I’ve been to several HPB locations and this one is by far the best. I am a big fan!

I wasn’t very impressed with the selection here. Their clearance did not offer much variety. I know this location is newer, so in time the items might get better.

I stopped in to look for two things: records and blu-​ray movies. Umm, who does the pricing at this place?
Records:
I realize that the demand for records has increased over the last few years, but I saw a lot of beat up records, scuffed spines on albums covers, missing record jacket/​sleeves and scratched records that were way overpriced. For example, there was a Led Zeppelin copy of Physical Graffiti that was scratched, cover falling apart and heavily worn…$ 30!!! I picked up another record that was warped for $ 20?
Blu-​Ray Movies:
I have a very high end home theater system. Too much quality is lost with streaming from Netflix or such, finding a place that sells a decent selection of blu-​ray movies is important. Selection was limited, but I did see a few titles I would have gotten. However, why would I want to pay more for used copies when I get it new for less at Target, Best Buy or anywhere else? I don’t think I noticed a single title that was cheaper elsewhere. If you like DVDs, you’ll be ok and find them for a few bucks.
I did buy a book, but it wasn’t close to half priced. I bought it because I really didn’t want to go to another place to save $ 3. No denying they have a good selection of books when a lot of book retailers are closing across the country.
They should probably change their name to «Nothing is Half Price Books and Overpriced Music and Movies.» Sorry guys.

This is a review of the vinyl selection only…
Like many of the other area HPBs locations I’ve reviewed, this HPB has a fairly nice collection of records in terms of genre diversity – one will find a decent selection of classical and jazz and a nice big selection of pop and rock records, along with a iittle bit of country, some blues, and a bit of soundtrack and world, as well.
Like the Palatine HPB, the clearance bin is a great place to find records, and often, the quality if just as good if not better than the stuff available up top. Of course, the big advantage is the prices are clearance – either 1.00 or more often just .50 cents.
As with all the other HPB locations, the quality of the records can sometimes vary quite a bit, so it’s always best to check condition before buying. Unfortunately, rather than pricing the records more like Bloomingdale or Palatine, this one is often more like Naperville and Niles, where the prices are often higher than the condition of the records actually warrants. This is not always the case at this location, though – it can be hit or miss.

This place never disappoints, I know their organization can be a bit better but with their in & out volumes it’s all good. The staff is always very helpful. Not sure if it’s just me but employees throughout this chain seem to actually enjoy the job.
Prices you can’t compete with on books and wide variety. Now if you’ve never been here or this chain, you must know they have much more than just books! Along with tons of small cool «stocking stuffers» they have a nice selection of movies, DVDs in General like tv shows, music, comic books, audio books, board games and even video game consoles and games. All very competitively priced as well. You really can’t go wrong!

My daughter and I have a love of reading… this store is great… my 14 year old can find books she wants everytume we go… she also like the CD selection and has found many gifts for her friends.

Not really half price, but this place is definitely worth checking out and cheaper than regular bookstores! They have older selections, but they still do hold some current popular book titles. The venue is just as clean and big as any other Barnes and Noble and cheaper. They aren’t a boutique bookshop where there is a limited amount of books and small. I don’t know what there is to complain about!
Old and new, some of the things will leave you nostalgic and some of the things will be a steal.

I was raised by a pack of frugal nerds, so obviously I am in love with pretty much every single book store out there, especially the used book variety. Half Priced Books has an enormous selection of used and new books that encompasses pretty much every genre that the typical human can think of. They also have a selection of stationary, music, movies, and toys to delight the senses.
Today, I was searching for children’s versions of classic literature (I’ve been OBSESSED with these books since I heard about them only a few days ago)…normally they’re about $ 10-​$ 15 a pop & since I pretty much want all of them (read: NEED), I was hoping to score a good deal. Everything in the store is sorted by genre and then usually organized alphabetical by author. This made quick work of finding that they don’t have any of these books in stock. What’s great about HPB, however, is that they’re always getting new stuff… which means I’ll have to come back. Oh darn.
PRO TIP: If you’re planning on loading up on books, sign up for their email club to score a 10% off coupon. If you walk away from the store empty-​handed (like I did), the coupon’s good for 30 days.

This place is sooo great! The employees are very friendly and helpful (they helped me to my car with all my purchases) and I found a great bargain! I’ll definitely return over and over.

Love this place in general. When I found out one opened up close to home I was pretty excited.

Was looking for children’s DVD’s and CDs but didn’t want to pay full price. I was able to pick up a children’s book, 2 CDs, 1 DVD, and 3 sets of flash cards for $ 26. To me, this was a steal!
Very clean store. Well organized. Easy to find sections one is looking for. Their music section was pretty small compared to their other locations but I imagine it will only expand as the business continues to flourish.
I loved that they had a free coffee station with a seating area, shopping carts, and several employees as soon as the store was scheduled to open.

So excited to see this place! I’d heard it was opening here, but hadn’t given it much thought until I noticed it as I was passing by today. Had to make a quick stop.
I think Discovery Clothing used to be here, next to Hobby Lobby, and what a better and more worthy use of space this is! Being brand new, it is clean and well organized. The children’s section is especially well stocked, with a small table to use while browsing books.
I don’t ordinarily buy books, as I am a library lover, but I did finally break down and buy a copy of Divergent, since the library waiting lists are miles long for this title.
The employees we encountered were all friendly, especially the cashier who double wrapped a book for me that I mentioned was a surprise for my son.

ANOTHER Great Half Price Books location opens up officially to the Public ²⁄₂₀ at 1075 E. Golf Road, Located near National Pkwy. in the Woodfield Commons West Shopping Center, just a little West of the Toys Are Us on the South Side.

Bigger, brighter, plus an enormous area to drop off somebody’s kids while you are shopping. Rumor has it they will also be having some live entertainment.
