What a fantastic, beautiful secret Higgin’s Beach has with the Breakers. My boyfriend and I found this little gem while doing some digging online for a fun mini-vacation over Labor Day weekend. There were literally hundreds of other B&B’s that swore they all seemed to have a similar ocean view, private bathrooms, or wifi but for twice or three times as much! What drew me to this B&B was the friendliness of the owners as I emailed w/a few questions, and the fact that they were very flexible with me in booking and the deposit. We were booked in Room 7, third floor at the end of the hall. We had a mind blowing partial ocean view, but that didn’t matter so much as all you had to do was open your windows and you would see, hear and smell the ocean at your doorstep. The room was quaint– nothing overwhelming(double size bed, two nightstands, a bureau and small closet). The fan kept things nice and cool. The bathroom was again nothing to scream about(utilitarian shower with decent pressure, etc), but it was private and in a B&B that can be a hot commodity. I cannot say enough about the ocean views, and the proximity to the front door. When you come downstairs into the main area, you have access to two large sitting rooms with plenty of books, maritime perks(tide charts, etc), TV’s, and chairs/couches throughout. There is also a small bathroom on the bottom floor. Once you exit the main sitting area, you enter a large wrap around enclosed porch with the breakfast area to the left(I saw about 8 or 10 tables that seat 4 or so). There are then about 6 rocking chairs lined up on the other side of the porch, again looking directly at the ocean with outlets available. Quite a few people lounged there with their laptops and the windows open for that lovely salt breeze. Breakfast was pretty impressive. The selection is pretty basic– but you can tell someone in that kitchen cared a lot about what they were doing! I felt like I was at a friend’s table. The beach was gorgeous. Perhaps a bit sea-weedy, but once you get past that the water was cool and crisp with swimmers braving the cool temps. Surfers hours are limited to before 11am, and after 5pm so that left most of the day to sun bathers and swimmers. I found no issues with rocks, and didn’t see much in the way of fish either. Your only company are other families relaxing, and seagulls! I would absolutely recommend this establishment to anyone looking for a great vacation with stunning views, fantastic breakfast, and easy access to the town and other eateries.

Last week marked my 31st year spending a perfect(no matter what the weather) summer week at The Breakers and Higgins Beach. I first brought my husband of 27 years when we were dating. My 24-year-old daughter spent her first week at The Breakers when she was one month old, and she promises that someday she’ll bring her family. It’s that kind of place. It’s not fancy, but it’s so comfortable. The ocean is crashing 100 feet away(at high tide) and is always a presence in scent, sight and sound. We think that there’s no better view in Maine than from the Adirondack chairs on The Breakers’ front lawn. Technically this is a bed & breakfast but Rodney, our friend & Innkeeper(who we’ve known since he was in his 20’s and his dad was the innkeeper) provides breakfast that could last you until dinner! Choices of juice & fruits, followed by cereals including old-fashioned oatmeal, then eggs any way you want, bacon(and he knows how I like it!), ham, pancakes and different home-made muffins every day. Did I mention that Rod makes his own preserves & jellies and bakes bread daily? But then there is lunch, with sandwiches available for purchase on that homemade bread, and Rod’s lobster roll rivals the one at Two Lights ANYDAY as far as I’m concerned. Every room has a view of the ocean. Knotty pine paneling on walls, you fill out your own registration card, towels may not be plush or big but they dry you just fine and there are fans in the rooms and extra pillows, and a TV in the room if you can tear yourself away from walking barefoot on the beach or your glass of wine on the front lawn(bring your own bottle and keep it in the community fridge in the basement). There are lots of dinner options from gourmet to lobster docks from Portland to Cape Elizabeth. Though we normally go to The Breakers in the summer for a week, we’ve also added days here and there over the years in June, September & October. And two years ago, we started going for a mid-winter January or February few days which are magical, quiet & cold — icy beach walks, easy restaurant reservations, great shopping & museum exhibits. In case I haven’t been clear, this is one of the best places in the world. Go to The Breakers and let this place become magical for you, your sweetheart or your family.

I can’t believe there are no reviews for this place. Its an old inn that sits on Higgins beach(which is a great beach). Location and view are amazing. Its basically a B&B with private bathrooms. Rooms themselves are a bit dated, but pretty cheap rate. Tiny TV. No AC, but they had fans in the room. For the most part not a problem, great sea breeze kept it cool enough. Great breakfast included, very friendly staff. I would go back. The view, just gorgeous. I put up some pics of the view from the front yard/deck as proof.
