Savoy 16 Theater

I never get to actually GO to movies anymore, so color me impressed when I went to see the new Star Wars flick in the LUXURY THEATER.
When you buy your ticket, you actually select your specific seat and it is saved JUST for you, which I thought was nice, but… why?
Oh I found out why. You walk in to the theater and see all these oversized recliners with TONS of room between rows! When you sit down, there are electronic controls that allow you to recline at various levels and you can ALWAYS see the screen. There is no worry about a tall guy sitting in front of you or somebody behind you kicking your seat.
This was the singularly BEST movie-​going experience I’ve ever had. The luxury theater is a little more expensive than a regular ticket, but not so much that it would turn me off. This is how I intend to see movies in the theater from now on! Yay!

I’ve been going to the Savoy Theater since I was kid. :-) I think I have been to the theater on the other side of town only once or twice lol. Alot has changed at this theater. The biggest change is that they have IMAX. My dad isn’t much of a movie-​goer, but he loves going to the IMAX. The IMAX is located at the far end of the theater and they will take your ticket there. At least that is what happened when we went to see Star Wars. The IMAX is huge — I was surprised by the number of seats in the the theater. Overall, the seats at Savoy 16 are alot more comfy now. They offer military, student, and senior discounts. They also have a rewards club.

Despite the fact that this is my first review of the Savoy 16, my husband and I have been HUGE fans ever since it was built in the mid 2000s! Refurbed in 2012 into the areas first IMAX theater, Savoy 16 has spent lots of money on upgrades to make your movie watching experience top-​notch!
One of these upgrades, we were fortunate enough to enjoy this last weekend while seeing The Martian! We sat in the upgraded «luxury» box seats, SUPER LUSH, air-​conditioned cool, superbly sublime seats that offered a recliner option. These over-​sized offerings provided plenty of SEAT for the old SEAT, if you know what I mean, plus they were amazingly comfortable.
For $ 4 more than a regular seat, do yourself the favor, and at least try them once. I guarantee you an overabundance in the adjective and adverb arena. =D
For more than 15 years, and hundreds of movies, we relied on Goodrich Quality and Savoy 16 as our exclusive movie theatre. Now, when we venture back, it’s still the only place that ever comes to mind!

We saw Jurrassic Park 3D last weekend! It was an amazing experience! We ordered tickets online which made the whole thing a breeze. It was pretty crowded and took awhile to get popcorn but the assigned seats make it convenient since you dont have to get there super early to claim seats. The prices are pretty high but you get huge servings. I’m weirded out by movie theater popcorn butter so I was happy to see the seasoning station which was past the concessions by the restrooms. One annoyance which wasn’t too much the fault of the theatre were the noisy people on front of us drinking beer openly. It was hard to know how to handle that situation.

Glad they had Rifftrax Live, but what kind of a theater charges for butter on your popcorn on top of charging for a refill? Popcorn already costs an arm and a leg, so this is ridiculous!

This is the best theater in Champaign-​Urbana. I love that they offer many movies that are not out of only «Hollywood». I have seen several christian studio releases there. This theater also offers Opera showings, and classic movies. The reworking of the frequent movie goer program is a plus too. A person can’t beat the free movie series for kids in the fall and spring, not to mention the $ 1 summer series.

Great for imax movies and popcorns are good.

The film Selma was a perfect film, but it is hard to depict decades of brutality in an hour and a half film. The film was brilliantly cast. British actor Tom Wilkerson played LBJ perfectly. The lead actors were flawless. Even the actors with minor roles were amazing. Shortly after the film started, you see several little girls decending the steps of Ebinezer Baptist Church, discussing how Coretta King has such good hair. You know a bomb will go off if you know history. The bomb does go off, but I was unprepared, and let out a scream. We are reminded of what an amazing orator Dr. King was, the tonal quality of his voice as a Baptist preacher that brought you to tears, and what a brilliant strategist he was. It was a faith based movement, carried out in churches and makeshift back rooms. It was unpredictable, so King had to think on his feet and change strategies in a moments notice. It was a game of chess where the wrong move could result in many injuies and deaths. The rules and laws didn’t apply. Because of his non violent approach, white clergy and a handful of celebrities added a high profile to the situation. I marched in the Civil Rights Movement with the L.A. branch of SCLC, and it could get very frightening. The fear was palpable. I remember how calm my African American friends remained, while I was shaking. For them it was a common and every day incident. My older sisters attended Claymont High School in Delaware, and were part of the second integration case after Brown vs Topeka, Kansas. I also was part of that integration movement and didn’t realize it at the time. A young Black student showed up in my class one day, sat next to me, then disappeared a few weeks later. It was a horrible period to live through, and the first time the news brought it into our living rooms. What is important is that younger generaions know the history. When I see young people marching over the deaths of Eric Garner, TevonMartin, and others, it touches my heart. Life is not about «them and us“but an understanding that we stand together or fall together as a human family. That should be the basis of our faith, to stand for those who are powerless. Being raised Catholic, it was a message I was constantly being indoctrinated with, and a good message it was. I see many people very comfortable with other ethnicities having an upper middle class status, but that’s not what Dr. King was about. It was about bringing dignity to the lives of the poor, the garbage collectors, the disenfranchized. In that respect, nothing has changed. It’s the people who we lock our car doors when we drive through their neighborhoods, or clutch our purses a little tighter, that we need to most connect with and understand their stories. Went to see American Sniper last night, and we went at the 9:40 show which was «luxury» seating. I had no idea this theater had that. The seats are big oversized chairs with a recliner style to it. Very comfortable and roomy. Getting tickets and concessions was quick. Theater was clean and staff was friendly

Good seating and pretty fast service. I haven’t had issues here though I haven’t been to Carmike to see the difference. It’s relatively clean and the seats are comfortable.
Good sound system as well.

The remodel of the interior really went well.
It is super easy to buy tickets.

Due to the large number of registers I haven’t had to wait long in line for refreshments.
The restrooms are clean.
Seats are comfortable.
Great sound and picture quality.
Free drink refills and .50 popcorn refills.
Haven’t had a bad experience yet.
I’ve seen two movies in 3D IMAX at this location and thought they were amazing.
It is pricey to see movies in that format so make sure it is movie you know you will enjoy. (I consider seeing films in that format a special treat)

Definitely the better theatre in town. Very clean, comfy seats and easy ticketing system for prepay. Just saw hunger games and really enjoyed my experience. Theatre was a bit cold though.

First off, this IS NOT an IMAX theater. IMAX may have pimped out their name, but a real IMAX theater is EIGHT TO TWELVE STORIES high. Go to NYC, Chicago, LA, Toronto, Vancouver, etc… and those are IMAX screens!!! This is probably 4 stories at most… so I call it the half-​MAX theater. But past that, this is the best theater in town… clean, decent popcorn, stadium seating in most auditoriums (actually, might be all now… I think the renovations are done), good sound quality, and new screens… finally, Champaign-​Urbana has stepped into the first decade of the twenty-​first century in terms of movie quality. Hooray!!? I just wished they had better food…

I went to see Dispicable Me 2 (not as good as the first) and it was shown in one of the upgraded theaters and the seats were comfortable with more leg room. The screen was big and the movie was clear. They did a good job with the restoration. While I liked the movie theater before I like it even better now. I am really looking forward to seeing an Imax movie.

If you are a frequent movie-​goer in the Champaign-​Urbana area, this theater is the one to call home. The Beverly may be closer, but I always venture to the Savoy 16 for a better experience and more comfortable seats that allow you to lean back. I don’t typically buy concessions at the theater because of how drastically overpriced everything has become, but thanks to the rewards card I can save up my points for treating myself to a popcorn and drink every now and then.
They are currently putting in the first IMAX theatre in the area, which is scheduled to be finished by the end of May.

Theater is consistently the best in champaign. The staff does a great job with concessions and are very friendly and their frequent movie goer card make concession prices reasonable.
They lose a star because the popcorn is hit or miss. I’d say its fresh about 65% of the time from my experience. While that’s a good number, it still leaves 35% when it’s crappy. Great job overall savoy 16!

Even though they were clearly in the middle of major renovations the staff was friendly (as with most in Campaign), and service was prompt. We picked up some popcorn and water (moderately priced) and headed to the theater. The seats are comfy and recline, not the easiest to cuddle someone in but we made do. Would go back once the work is done and check out their new IMAX.

I love visiting the Savoy 16 theater. This theater may appear less high-​tech than the Beverly in north Champaign, but what it lacks in tech, it makes up for in price, efficiency and overall movie experience.
They employ quick service staff that will have your concessions order filled in a jiff. The tickets are reasonably priced and you cannot get any better than their Frequent Movie Goer (FMG) card program. This free card program allows you to earn points with every ticket purchased. Points can then be exchanged at concessions for some pretty sweet combo deals.
Best of all, the FMG card affords you a «super saver» price on movies that have been out for a couple weeks. If you can wait to see the latest blockbuster, you’ll be paying about five bucks to see the movie. You can’t get better than that.
If that isn’t enough, this theater is conveniently located next to plenty of fast-​food and sit-​down restaurants for a meal beforehand. There is even a grocery store and CVS nearby, so you can pick up your candy prior to getting to the theater.

When this theater first opened, it was awesome!!! Now it’s a dirty, sticky hellhole, the sound is constantly going out, and the staff members are so rude it’s almost entertaining. And the popcorn is always stale. I swear, they could pop it straight into the bag, and it would still taste 3 days old.
The Beverly is even worse, but I couldn’t bring myself to give the Savoy 2 stars in order to illustrate this.

The Sunday afternoon I was in theater #1 at the Savoy 16 to watch the movie «Five Year Engagement» didn’t start out so well. During the last preview, the last 10 – 15 seconds experienced garbled audio which continued to the main feature. I was sitting at the back where the usher was communicating with the guests. They restarted the movie at least three times. Stopped it more. So far the best thong has been the pop and popcorn. I’m guessing they’ll fix it and then we all will get free movie passes for one in the future.
A manager just popped in and says they are sorry. That we call will get refunds. And that the projection booth manager is working on it. And if anyone can get it working it is him.
OK. it’s started again… the audio track that carries the main dialogue is what is not coming through. and that still us the case.
People are now getting up in droves for their refund. There is a big discussion in the hallway with theater personnel about all of this.
Personally, I’ll probably stay through the duration of my concessions.
It is currently 30 minutes past the scheduled start time. The sound is now flipping back and forth between garbled and clear. The farthest into the beginning of the movie is about 2 minutes when the movie gas s flashback remembrance of a costume party a year should.
We just now passed that part in the movie. Probably 60% garbled so far. Still garbled. Now clear. Hope this holds out.
Now that this seems to be working. Well crap. There the audio goes again.
Another group of about 10 people walked out. I can see more getting up. A couple more just left. This theater is divided into thirds. I’m sitting at the back of the rightmost third. No one is in my section. I carry a flashlight and have shined it around the empty theater and know without a doubt that I am the last one.
A manager has just visited me and says I get the choice if emergency pass or refund and voucher for concessions to be free next time. Which, will likely be used when the Avengers show on the other half of this week.
The manager just stopped by apologizing and saying the are still trying to fix it and they are trying to find out whether they will have to cancel shows in this theater for the rest of the night. In finding out, they said they might lose audio for a minute or two. Big deal.
The manager is now bringing the hardware that would be used by folks with a hearing impairment.
So. this is a closed caption device that fits in the cup holder on a long goose neck bendy contraption. The trick to this device is getting the base snugly fit into the cup holder do that you can wrestle the two line display into position in order to read along easily.
It’s kinda awkward to setup having never done it before.
Audio has been working for about the last 3 minutes.
Enough for this experience. Not the most pleasant but they worked to make it right now and for the future.
Normally this is a good experience at Savoy 16. Other than the annoyance of garbled audio, it still was a good ecperience.
Considering all… three stars.
