Magnolia’s of Savannah

Happened upon the store on a late night walk through the streets around the hotel. We saw in the window the most perfect gift for a friend of ours who was back in Rhode Island taking care of our dog. Made a note to come back to the store the next day. Unfortunately we came back from Tybee Island a little later that we originally intended and were left standing outside now closed store. Luckily the daughter of the owners was inside working on UPC codes for the merchandise. She came to the door to see our longing faces for a holographic, antique portrait and took pity on us. After a wonderful conversation about education, Savannah, oddities and the like we had our picture! Thanks again and we’ll definitely head back there the next time we are in Savannah!

I agree with Carl C. that this was a cute little Savannah shop. They had items that I did not see in any other shops in the historic district. They had items that were a step up from the usual touristy «junk». There was a cute Halloween/​zombie section in the back, books, postcards, kitchen items, ornaments, and other girlie items. There was a wall of toys and trinkets for children. Prices are high, but you expect that in this part of town.

. I read Jeanne C.‘s review AFTER our visit to Savannah. I’m surprised because while I was in Magnolia’s I overheard one of the owners recounting a run-​in with a girl scout leader to another person. He was bemoaning this particular woman, and the girl scouts (maybe all children??) in general. He definitely didn’t seem to have a high tolerance for youngsters. At the time I thought it was strange, and honestly, a little tacky, to talk about a customer so loudly and in the presence of other customers. Now it makes sense after reading Jeanne C.‘s review. Obviously she made quite the impression on the owner as our visit was 3 months after hers!

I am a Girl Scout Leader and my Junior Girl Scout Troop (¹⁰⁄₁₁ year olds) was visiting Savannah and during our over two hour lunch we decided to walk the shops of Savannah. Across from the Juliette Gordon Low house are a couple of cute little shops of which this was one. First we walked in and the owner looked at us, as some were still outside, and basically let us know that the large group of us were not welcome because «he couldn’t handle it» and he became very nervous. A few left at the awkward statement and then he asked the girls not to touch a red metallic curtain hanging in front of the display window, which the girls were nowhere close to it. I have to add that the girls who were in the store, maybe 3, none had touched anything or were being irresponsible. They weren’t running around but simply browsing the store for souveniers (his front window blatantly said «toys» as an advertisement. I told the girls that it was time to go and he said very very rudely, «Yes, Please do.» I looked over and said, «great customer service» to which he replied «I do very well, thank you!». The store was empty on a Saturday afternoon so not sure how well he does. Another adult mom looked at him and said something about him being so unhappy and he flipped her the bird! I have NEVER been so insulted in my life or been treated so rudely or kicked out of a store. The owner was disgruntled, very rude to the adults and the girls, and simply not very customer service oriented. If he doesn’t want Girl Scouts in his store then he should not have opened up directly across the street from the Girl Scout’s Founders home.

If you’re ever shopping or walking around in the central or riverfront section of Savannah (or you’re anywhere near Wright Square) stop in a take a look.
Bob, the owner, was more than helpful and his stock includes items like:

Old Toys
Old Games
Candles
Plush items
Artwork
Pictures
Photos
Cookie Cutters
Post-​Cards … trust me, the list goes on…
You might find an item in his store you remember from your childhood (if you’re a child of the 60’s or 70’s that is…)
Highly recommended
Parking: On street, 30 minutes to 2 hour parking is in the area, with some free parking available within a few blocks. Keep the meter stocked with quarters!
Nearby: Wright Square, other shops, Riverfront, Lady and Sons, Whitaker Street, Drayton Street, Ogelthorpe Avenue.
Note: Bull Street is centrally located in Savannah and is the East-​West divider of city street names.
