Specialties
Books on Bay provides a unique shopping experience for book lovers. Tucked away in a small building on West Bay Street just below The Attic Antiques, the shop has thousands of books ranging from the 1600s to the late 1900s. Categories include both the traditional (Mystery, Religious) and the whimsical (Authors You Should Recognize, Heaving Bosom Books). All of the favorites are there – Nancy Drew, Dick & Jane, Zane Grey, The Hardy Boys, Tom Swift, Dorothy and Toto, and more! Books on Bay is open daily at 10 am, so you can stop by any day of the week!
We are open all holidays with a little something extra for Savannah’s visitors. Join us the 4th of July for lemonade and watermelon, Thanksgiving for pie and coffee, Christmas Day for eggnog and carols, New Year’s Day for champagne (if you’re old enough) and black-eyed peas (if you want to be Southern), St. Patrick’s Day for something green, and Easter for candy. And, of course, every day in between we’ll have a smile just for you!
History
Established in 2008.
Although we’ve been selling books for nearly 20 years, we didn’t have a real home of our own until we found the perfect tucked-away place in the Historic District of Savannah, Georgia. A little paint, some imagination, lots of books and voilà! Books on Bay was a real brick-and-mortar bookshop. We opened on July 4, 2008, welcoming visitors and locals alike to our version of a book heaven.
Meet the Business Owner
Betsy H.
Business Owner
One of my earliest memories is sitting in my father’s lap as he read the Sunday funnies to me. Instead of just reading the words, though, he would point to the drawings and add his own ideas about what the characters might be thinking or what else might be happening just out of view. From that beginning, I’ve come to believe that reading frames every part of our lives and that it really is 3-dimensional.
I’ve had a lifelong love affair with books, and along the way, I’ve collected Tom Swift (both Sr. and Jr.), Doc Savage, books with the name «Betsy» in the title, books with Gretta covers, Cat Club books by Esther Averill, and a few really, really old books.
When I’m not in the shop, you can find me having a good time with books – in the classroom at Armstrong State University, where I teach English. Two of the best things ever are helping people find a lost book from their past (I call it «mending a memory») and seeing students discover joy in books. Lucky me. .. I get to do both!
