Armstrong Atlantic State University

I just transferred to ASU recently and I have to say it’s a pretty good school (academic wise). All of my classes are fairly small and my professors know most people’s names, which could work to your disadvantage if you ever skip. The work load so far isn’t so bad either, I could get all my assignments done fairly quick if I just take a few minutes out of my day.
I’d say the worst things about ASU though are social life and the financial aid office. In regards to social life, well it seems pretty hard to really have one here. I do live on campus right now and will go out with my roommates, however finding people you really mesh well with may be difficult (or maybe just for transfers, I’m not sure about for freshmen). I’ve even tried going to a few club meetings just to make friends, and trying harder to talk to people in classes more, but I’m still pretty much a «loner». The odd thing about this though is I see a lot of other people who seem to have a no friends or a very small number as well, and they’ve been here for YEARS. If you’re going to come to ASU you have to really try to find friends, at my other (two) colleges I had a much easier time meeting people than I do here.
As for the financial aid office, I don’t know where to even begin. They’re literally a joke, there’s no other words for them. I spent a little over a month before transferring having to fill out paper work for this school (the SAME documents over and over). Then about a week before my payment plan was due they then went back and said I had no financial aid and I would be paying out of pocket at out of state rates! When originally they had awarded me money and I’m a Georgia state resident. I had to fight with this office via email and over the phone continuously my whole winter break and STILL now for some errors on my account. Try to get outside scholarships/​grants so you have less to deal with in the financial aid office to be honest, or at least do all of your paper work as soon as possible. The only person in the financial aid office with any clue as to what she’s doing is the head of the department (Kaye, is her name I believe). She’s truly a saint and will fix all your problems promptly.
Overall ASU is a decent school for academic purposes. If you don’t mind being alone (as I don’t so much) you won’t really feel bothered by the lack of socialization. Really after coming here I just want to finish getting my degree and getting out of Savannah ASAP.

I like the school itself but getting a required $ 50-​$ 75 parking deal is ridiculous. Had to wait outside in 92-​degree heat while they processed my form. Anyone who left for class was punished by having their forms sent to the bottom of the pile. So a 45-​minute wait outside in 92-​degree heat and cannot even go to class and pick the decal up later.

Maria C.‘s review was pretty dead on… I had mixed feeling also and I agree… don’t deal with the financial aid department if you don’t have to (isn’t this most schools, though). When I attended AASU, one of the things that I thought was crazy is that they don’t offer an undergraduate business degree, however they will prep you to go to another school to get one. Oh another thing, PARKING: Make sure you have a decal or you will get ticketed! Students drive like maniacs in the parking lot so beware and look both ways.
The campus and student activities have continued to grow which is a plus. Celebrate Armstrong Day and festivals are always fun– be sure to check out AASU art exhibits and the Masquers student theatre troupe from time to time. Plays are always reasonably priced for students and the general public.
All in all, I feel like there are more pros than cons and would definitely recommend this university.

I have mixed feelings after spending three years at this institution. I had some really top-​notch professors — the kind who make you wonder how they ended up here instead of some Ivy League school — particularly in the history department. On the other hand, the fact that there aren’t any community colleges in Georgia means that there are three times as many remedial English and Math classes as there are upper level history classes, and many of the students are CLEARLY not remotely ready for college. Sitting through Algebra 101 with students who barely passed remedial math was torture. And so many remedial classes severely limits the offerings in other areas, which is a shame. Especially when you’re majoring in history and wishing there were more diverse course offerings, and earning an A+ on a paper in Modern Southern History that you know really only merited an A– but probably got graded that high out of the professor’s relief that at least one student had a grasp of remedial English. Despite my fractured and run-​on sentences in this review.
Oh, and do ANYTHING you can to not have to deal with the Financial Aid Office. Trust me on this.
