Plate Shop

This is the kind of place that serves very fussy food in precious preparations for a lot of money and makes you secretly wish you were eating somewhere else.

Sad to report Plate Shop is closed, it’s now Fast Food Français, owned by the people who run Le Garage Bistro (Sausalito) and L’appart Resto (San Anselmo).

We thought this would be a cute place for brunch and upon the recommendation of our waitress, we ordered two fried chickens as well as the cassoulet and burger.
However, the chicken was not only undercooked for both pieces, it was RAW (about two inches of breast meat that was raw). The waitress was at first apologetic and said of course, we’ll redo them and bring them back.
However, what she and the chef did was just not right. They refried the chicken breast, which was cut into two pieces. A chef should know once you cut into a chicken all the juices flow out. When I told the waitress I did not want the chicken, she was surprised that I didn’t want it, and said «you really want me to take it back?» She didn’t understand how to rectify the situation and did not offer to bring me something else or remake the chicken. Instead, what she did was avoid the table and not address the situation.
And yes, they charged us for EVERY single item, including the other fried chicken that was raw and just removed the one fried chicken that I returned.
This is a place where their bad customer service just completely turned us off. POSSIBLY THE WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE I’VE RECEIVED AT A RESTAURANT!!!

I’ve been here several times now & couldn’t Unilocal sooner because I thought it was just luck that I kept eating some of the best meals of my life & that the cocktails were too perfect.
Nope. It’s just Plate Shop. It’s all done so well, it just doesn’t get better. I can’t go there without having the grilled squid. I tried to just belly up to the bar one night for yet another of their glorious mixed drinks, but that squid, oh my. You must have it. The moussaka is also great as an entrée, but the 38 North fried chicken knocks off my socks repeatedly. I have tried all the salads (though the menu does rotate) & they’ve all been wonderful. The servers are friendly & know their menus.
The bathroom is clean & I’m a sucker for Heath dinnerware & some Restoration Hardware lighting. The garden, which you can view on the way to the bathroom, is well-​organized & a sight to see. It must be just one of the reasons everything is so tasty. It can’t get much fresher than farm to table.

A delicious way to burn a hole in your pocket. Really, I enjoyed it! But mostly for company and less for food.
The waitress has all the best tips and she’ll be honest with you about the state of their local fares. Do ask for her opinion.
Reserving dessert early may be handy, as the restaurant makes a limited amount of certain dishes per day. Such is the price of using farmer’s market groceries.
Of the 16 dishes in my 4 person party, my favorite was the flank steak. Salmon was mediocre and the salads were great.

Great spot in Sausalito! Service was great, our server really knew her stuff. They have a really good wine list and drink menu. Lots of the ingredients in their drinks come right from their garden. It was my first time having grilled squid and I was not disappointed. My entrée, Moussaka, was hearty and flavorful. For dessert I had the pot de crème, which was very good, but I feel could have had a thicker consistency. Maybe it wasn’t chilled long enough? But overall the meal was excellent.

We continue to eat here for dinner every other week. Kent and his team continue to deliver excellent food for a reasonable price. Just can not say enough good things about the staff and food. We have not tried brunch, but certainly plan to do so soon.
You will absolutely enjoy yourself — whether its a special occasion or just a wonderful dinner for you and your friends.
Valet parking is now available by the Cinema.
Great for older children as well.

Salmon: nicely cooked and came with excellent bacon. They forgot the eggs though.
Corn beef hash: the potatoes were undercooked and overall this dish was only so-​so.
Seems like brunch may be a new thing for them, which they haven’t nailed down yet.

For an anniversary dinner this place was perfect. My partner and I enjoyed an unbelievable meal here and even though we were a little skeptical judging by some other restaurants in Sausalito we were completely blown away.
The owner sat us at the bar while we waited for our table. granted we were a bit early so that was no dirt off our shoulders. The drinks were made very well and got us off to the right start. Considering we were still feeling the alcohol several moments later there was no skimping on the good stuff. The vibe is very trendy with steam-​punk attributes adoring walls all around. Classy, chic, and dare I say… elegant. The décor was beautiful. We were seated shortly and given a table on the upper level over-​looking the restaurant. The server came by with fresh glasses of bubbly to celebrate our 1-​year mark. How sweet of them to have read my OpenTable section notating the obvious. GREAT start so far.
The grilled squid is the ONLY way to start your meal. I have to say the large bowl of fries wasn’t half bad either. And with those two dishes we were off to a romantic evening in deep conversations. The service was exceptional the food memorable. A little later in the evening the owner introduced us to the chef and his long-​time partner of 20+ years. «It gets easier with time» he said as we laughed and he scurried on back to the kitchen. The food is incredible and if we had enough time and stomach space we would have tried everything on the menu. The rabbit and king salmon were our selections for the evening and they were both cooked perfectly.
I’m still on a high from that meal and would love another experience, or two, at Plate Shop. Thank you for using local Heath ceramics considering your restaurant name and THANK YOU for making our 1-​year simply perfect.

Caledonia Street may be the path less traveled in Sausalito, but it is definitely my favorite little escape there (v. all the tourist spots on Bridgeview). Nestled amidsnt quaint shops and restaurants, is Sausalito’s version of nightlife: Plate Shop. Good bites (very few veggie options though), friendly folks, and great (and strong) drinks! Bonus points for clever, themed cocktails, i.e., a Mexican chocolate martini on Cinco de Mayo. Be forewarned that it gets really noisy, and that you probably will too after a couple of drinks, so enjoy!

This restaurant is great. The chef does an amazing job at pairing interesting ingredients together to make delicious food with a menu of locally sourced ingredients that are amazingly fresh.
They also have a great wine list and the staff is always friendly. Definitely worth a visit even if you are coming across the bridge from the city.

Wild farming (literally, check out the backdoor) and first-​class service in a posh dining setting. Really though, my appetizer soup ingredients came out from the farming plots in their backyard. Succulent braised beef with tube pasta that will make your tongue twirl. The Wild King Salmon is also very good, very pink slab that slides down your mouth swimmingly. Best drinks: The Sidecar and Bourbon Julep (lots of mint, from their farm). High-​end prices. After Poggio’s, the best restaurant that Sausalito has to offer.

Awesome bike ride from SF on a sunny day set the tone. Super friendly service, fun adult libations, and tasty treats. Bar seating is pretty chill for a relatively swanky place, but I’m not sure I’d dig the actual dining room as much. Being in semi-​biking garb probably doesn’t help that feeling much, but it seems a teeny bit stuffy.
Into the garden is like a classy, more alcoholic Bloody Mary. Instead of chunky tomato juice, they use fresh red bell peppers (!) to add a subtle sweetness and earthiness. It sounds a little intense, but it’s crazy good.
Firelit manhattan adds a bit of oomph to an already fantastic drink. Manhattan? Good. Manhattan with blue bottle coffee liquor? Oh yes, please.

My friend and I stopped in here for what was just going to be dinner and a drink. It wasn’t crowded because it was around some holiday (Thanksgiving? I can’t remember), so we were able to get a good table in the window.
The menu was interesting and the staff attentive. Only moments after I vowed to never again drink champagne (as I’d fallen on my butt at a Halloween party weeks earlier after chugging bubbles), I ordered a champagne and gin cocktail. And another and another. Luckily, I had a fantastic meal of stuffed squash before the extraordinary cocktails did their thing. True to my Brut nature, I got hammered.
About $ 80 later, I settled up and we slummed it over to Smitty’s where I’m sure I made an ass of myself and my friends. And later, I passed out on their fold-​out, only to wake up at 6 am with my makeup smeared around my bloodshot eyes and my friend passed out, pants-​less, on her other couch.
Plate Shop: great food, greater drinks, and the exclamation point on why I can’t drink champagne anymore.

We enjoyed our meal. We didn’t really know what type of restaurant it was but really enjoy local organic casual places with ever changing menus so this seemed promising as soon as our server described it. We were able to sit outside since it was a warm night. Our server gave us really helpful suggestions and we ended ordering the braised short ribs with kale subbed in for the spaetzel and some breadcrumbs and dates, and a heritage goat dugout with fettucine and pecorino. We both loved our dishes. The pasta was very light and cooked well, and the sugo was a bit gamey but flavorful. We were not that excited about our polenta olive oil cake which was really dry, but in fairness the server recommended the banana bread pudding and raspberry sorbet instead so we aren’t blaming them.
Nice cute restaurant. 65 pre tip for two entrees, one glass of wine and one dessert.

We’ve been to plate shop a few times now that the star chef went back to the world of overhyped high profile restaurants, apparently working for her boyfriend in Jack London Square.
Now the kitchen is in the hands of someone who ran a successful neighborhood restaurant in San Francisco’s Russian Hill, with a similar rustic style of farm fresh fare. The chef’s partner runs the front of the house in Sausalito as he did in SF, and the partners in life are helping the humble North Bay locale make a dramatic comeback from a shaky opening.
Grilled squid on beans that have not been dried as this is now the season with a salsa verde over the top is a great way to start. The pork chop is tasty and so is the Marin Sun Farms chicken. My wife always loves whatever fish dish is on the entrée menu, Salmon, Sole, and last night was King Fish, kind of like sword fish without the mercury. It tasted great.
The portions are generous for the price as any savvy diner would easily recognize, but more dramatic is the savings there on wines by the bottle.
We had a bottle of Lynmar Pinot for $ 50 which is about $ 80 at the Moss Room. We also enjoyed a bottle of Shea Vineyards Oregon Chardonnay for the same price– a hard to find small production wine that is as good as many French White Burgundies for a fraction of the price.
The wines by the glass at the higher end (’05 Sedna Napa cab, the same as is poured at La Folie) are also quite good.
It seems apparent that when the new management took over, that some professional waiters from the city came with them, at least on the weekends, so service seems more professional and pleasant than before.

Tucked away in the picturesque town of Sausalito lies a hidden gem, The Plate Shop. And well hidden it is. With barely a sign, one can drive by many times without even noticing this tiny shop, as we did. The décor is whimsical, modern with a tinge of rustic. Service is impeccable.
The Plate Shop articulates with the seasons. Not only are the ingredients from their own garden, a few steps from our table, each bite bursts with flavors of summer. Freshly plucked sprigs of rosemary flavor the tender ribchop and the poached egg that adorn the rabbit livers was just laid by the hen I was chasing around in the garden.
With that said, I’m here to stress this: All movements come and go, be it nose to tail, locavore, molecular gastronomy, or street food. So please drop by and have some warm Spanish olives or better yet, sip on one of their artisanal cocktails, as I would like to see this one stay.

The Plate Shop is a real head scratcher. I’m still scratching my noggin trying to figure out what to write about this vexing restaurant.
I came expecting Milan catwalk worthy dishes-​visually speaking. Having seen a slideshow of dishes on some epicurean website, I was intrigued by the dishes and presentation. Methinks they were photoshopped a wee bit. Aesthetically the dishes were more like a Wichita catwalk. Kind of messy and unpolished. Who cares if it tastes good, right?
It’s not so simple. Some dishes were tasty, some tasteless, and some just in bad taste. I went with two friends, and we each got a nibble and a consume (Marinese for appetizer and entrée), so all told I tasted six different savory dishes. Out of the nibbles I tried (that just sounds wrong), I only recommend the smoked risotto, which comes with uni and sea beans (as well as a worthless sprig of nasturtium). Very small portion, but well done and very delicious. The pâté en croute, which is an upscale pig in a blanket was very bland though luckily was saved by the presence of whole-​grain mustard. The mackeral was just a mess with too much going on, but the flavors were all there but apparently were not getting along well that day. To conclude my paragraph on nibbles, I have to comment on the pricing, which I hate to do because sounding cheap is one of my primary phobias. The nibbles prices are rather high for the amount of food-they’re really not joking about nibbling. The pâté en croute was fourteen dollars and so lackluster, and the other nibbles are similarly priced.
Luckily the meat of Plate Shop is found in the meat dishes, or ‘consumes’ of the menu. Standouts were the braised lamb and cleverly named ‘Whole Half Chicken’ which had jameson gelee on chicken liver. The braised lamb was a wise choice-​perfectly braised, spiced well with vadouvan, and I think the accompanying carrots were sous-​vided. The chicken was a presentation of various preparations of chicken-​liver mousse (with the winning Jameson gelee), roast breast, fried wing. Kind of a novelty dish but hey, it tasted good. Best part of consume was that they did not skimp size wise. After the nibble I was expecting very little, but was very full after the consumes. That could be related to the side order of brussel sprouts which were too heavy on the gribiche.
Desserts were wonderful and supermodel beautiful. I wish I could taste more of the bourbon flavor in the D44. Funny how my favorite parts of the food are centered around liquor. The bar was busy but their cocktails were just a-​ok, probably better off ordering your favorite classic. I ordered a Shipyard Mule which had some of my favorite things in life (ginger, rosemary, vodka), but just didn’t do anything for me. The service is a head and chin scratcher. Very aloof at times, very peppy the next minute, will likely mature over time but very unripe right now.
While I appreciated the maverick spirit of Plate Shop’s menu, the execution is pretty raw and clumsy at this point. I can’t imagine returning with places like Commonwealth and Sons & Daughters doing their thing in SF with much better results (and much fairer prices). I do hope they break a leg; Sausalito needs more places than Italian and clam chowder joints.
