The Salvation Army Family Store

I shop here frequently and find everyone in the store helpful. I have found so many great bargains from clothing to furniture. Every day there is a sale on different items. I have purchased beautiful Tory, Burberry and Channel item at great prices. I have donated items with no problems. I have never run into an issue with anyone that works there, totally the opposite, friendly and helpful. I was disgusted with some of the nasty reviews with name calling and judging people that work there, shame on you! I think SA offers a great opportunity for those in need
and being a «regular» I have actually had the pleasure of getting to know some of their names and a little about them, rather than judging them, one previously homeless, and others now clean… I think it is wonderful to have SA in the area to help those that seek it:)

Scheduled a pickup of our couch, waited a MONTH before they were able to come into the city, then after waiting all day, called their dispatch center who claims that the driver had already come by… although I had been sitting and waiting all day. No call no doorbell and then they have the nerve to say «I don’t know what to tell you». How about get drivers who don’t lie and actually do their job?!?
So much for trying to do a good thing. Thanks for nothing Salvation Army of Saugus.
Very disappointing.

We just moved to the Greater Boston area, & we had several items that we wanted to donate (including an armoire, a leather recliner, 2 bookcases & a TV stand/​cabinet). At first, we were skeptical about donating to Saugus’s Salvation Army, given all of the horror stories that we’ve read on Unilocal.Thankfully, however, things could not have gone better for us. The two gentlemen who came to pick up our donations (VLADIMIR and SEBASTIAN) were kind, courteous, efficient & the consummate professionals. They arrived exactly on time, & they moved everything quickly & skillfully.
The next time that we schedule a donation pickup, I pray that the Salvation Army sends us Vladimir and Sebastian again. These two gentlemen perfectly embody what the Salvation Army is «supposed» to represent. The Salvation Army’s mission statement states that the organization «is motivated by the love of God. Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination.» I am just very sorry that others on Unilocal have had such terrible experiences. The actions of some Salvation Army employees (yelling at people who are attempting to donate or refusing acceptable donations) are far from God-​like or Christ-​like… and these actions go directly against the Salvation Army’s mission statement. I hope for everyone’s sake that Saugus’s Salvation Army hires more wonderful people, like the ones that my family met today– people like VLADIMIR and SEBASTIAN!

Salvation Army? Junkie Army sounds more like it.
Obviously you know what you are in for once you enter this store. I’ve been coming to this location since I was a kid. Never bought anything. Just look. It’s junk and clothes that people died in. It’s a flea market run by addicts & drunks. Harsh but the truth.
My reason to review this store now is to shine light on an incident that occurred on a sunday afternoon in the middle of October. I was dropping off clothes that were used but in good condition. I also had a radio tricycle from the 80’s that I felt better giving away to a good cause then scraping the metal.
The story goes like this. I pull up in my jeep. There’s an older women being helped by a younger guy who seemed like a nice guy helping her out. I get out of my car. This older leather face junkie comes up to me. I ask him how are you? He just looks like at me, stares into my car. It’s 1pm on a Sunday and he’s wearing a Patriots winter hat. I already know he’s mad he’s missing the game and has to work. Life is so hard. He looks into my car as I open my trunk. This man pulls on my jeeps handle. I say, «I’ll unload it, chill.» He backs off all pissed giving me the «stare down». The guys probably 100lbs soaking wet and is a month sober. Save it. I unload the boxes of clothes. I put them down. He looks at me while I do this. I put the tricycle down and shut my doors. I say thank you have a nice day. This junkie picks up both boxes of clothes and the tricycle at the same time. Obviously it’s too much for him so he tosses the tricycle into the pile of stuff. He puts down the boxes. I start my engine. The junkie picks up the tricycle and saids it’s broken and he’s not taking it. I just look at him. I’m not going to spend my Sunday afternoon fighting with a pathetic junkie at the Salvation army. I just laughed in his face. He starts screaming at me to take it back. The other kid just watches on as this guy screams at the top of his lungs at me. I’m already in my car. I just drive off. This scum of the earth who’s living on my tax dollors to stay clean isn’t worth the effort of fighting. He starts pointing at my car as I drove away. As if he was going to jump into his car and follow me. Please this guy probably sold his ID for a bag of dope.
The bottom line, you try and help people only to get spit on by nobodies. I understand everyone has problems and life isn’t easy. I get some people are trying to fix their mistakes but don’t be a jerk at a Salvation Army drop off. He’s lucky it was me and not some other Saugus smuck who would’ve pounded his junkie face in. I’m sorry but go down Rt.1 and go to Savers. Better stuff with a better staff. Salvation Army is the the FERNS MOTEL (R.I.P) 2.0.

We generous people trying to do good by donating instead of selling our used furniture online for those who r in needs, but guess what, this is a place where they do not appreciate. They claim our furniture has stain on it, the fact is, this is a pull out that was use a few times back in our college years for guests, and we sanitized the whole thing inside out before putting it out for pick up. We have normal human vision, so we do not see the stain that was mentioned. When we called the store to ask why, we got hang up on for the subject matters.
Very disappointed.
Item will be on Craigslist for the luck person for free with pick up.

This store is so overpriced that it is comically hysterical. Today I saw an oil painting for $ 99.00 — - it was not a mistake. It was a cute painting but $ 99, really?! People shop here for bargains and I can’t see anyone ever buying this. ever!
I saw a random no special brand tank top sweater for $ 16.
I bought a xoxo jacket on sale from 35.00 (paid $ 17.99). Looked it up when I got home and it is selling brand new on the internet for $ 40.00.
What gives??!
You might find a steal here but you would have to look through mounds and mounds of over priced mediocre used goods.

I had a dining room and living room set to donate. I spent money to rent a uhaul and drove the items to Saugus. The items were refused because they looked worn. The guy didn’t even look at the dining room set at all which was used maybe a handful of times. He said they had too much merchandise in inventory and were refusing donations. I’m disappointed that I wasted money renting a truck to make a donation. Thankfully I found Savers who was very happy to accept the donation. I’ll never attempt to donate to Sally’s again.

DO NOT BOTHER TO DONATE FURNITURE HERE.
Despite their claim that they desperately need it, apparently if it isn’t brand new they won’t take it… or even look it over. This is to review the pickup service — we had a nice pleather leather couch with ottoman you could adjust the cushions to make it sectional or just a couch and ottoman. We also had a chaise lounge chair. the next scheduled pick up day was not until almost a week and a half after our new couch was to be delivered. When the day finally arrived it was rainy so we took the time to tape a tarp over it. There was a note saying it was all in too poor of condition to take. It was obvious that they did not even lift the tarp to look at all the items. The ottoman was in almost new condition because we hardly ever used it. The couch was a bit worn down but the other items were nearly new. I am almost positive they didn’t even look at the other items. When did donation places become so lazy and particular? We wanted to donate instead of just junk because it was nice furniture and we knew someone could use it. Maybe they couldn’t have made a ton of money from it but I didn’t think that was the point of donations. Very disappointed in this place and I will never use it again and recommend you donate your items somewhere else.

At one time I was totally hooked on ‘Sally’s’ and I had to go in at least 2 – 3 times a week.
Now they are so overpriced it is ridiculous. I can get a brand new great quality pair of shoes at DSW in Clearance for less than what they want for a shabby pair of worn shoes. They are off the charts. The bric a brac is ridiculous and a lot of it is junk. Yard sales are much better.
Also the clothes are woefully overpriced for donated goods. AND WHY do they staple the price tag right on top of the size tag??? I don’t get this at all.
The pictures, mirrors, and furniture are all overpriced too. I know they sell a lot but frankly you can do much much better on Craigslist.
I am disgusted with the prices and rarely go in there now.

Go in thinking that you are going to a regular clothing store because the prices are going to be the same. This is ridiculous, I saw a t– shirt for $ 16.99. I suggest everyone goes to savers instead you will pay actual thrift store prices.

What happened to this place? By Far the worst Salvation Army store I have ever been too. After the renovation prices on everything have skyrocketed! While every other store sells ties for $ 2 this place prices them at $ 9.99 to 16.99, also an incomplete used raggedy kitchen aid mixer for $ 150 when its on sale new for the same price right now at other retailers. Don’t let me get started on electronics. Video games individually priced at stupid prices. There even selling an empty bottle of Ultimate Vodka without the label for $ 20!!! OMG These are donated products and should be sold at affordable and reasonable prices. I would gladly support Salvation Army but they have to be on the same page as other stores in the chain. I will only go to Savers now.

there’s «a guy» who can price it. Just one guy.
Not sure about the clothing but furniture is too close to retail.

When I can buy a new ikea table cheaper than its priced at this place it’s just sad.

I live in Scottsdale AZ and scheduled a furniture pick up for 7÷8÷14. They informed me the window was 10:00 am to 1:30pm. I called at 2:15pm and asked how soon they would be there. I was assured they were running late but would eventually be there.
Called again at 4:00pm and was told to call a different number and speak to a dispatcher. I asked if they promised to be there because I had new furniture being delivered the next day. I was told absolutely. I then called dispatch and got an answering machine that said they would call back. Finally received a call around 5:15pm that said the truck had been re-​routed an was full and did I want them to Pick up on Thursday 7÷10÷14. I lost a day of work waiting for their pickup. I have supported S/​A for many years financially. WELL! THOSE DAYS ARE OVER. I don’t expect to hear any further from anyone but I needed to vent…

This is the first thrift store I have ever been to and I love it! I was skeptical at first but they have a wide variety of great items. It is well organized so you dont feel completely overwhelmed. I’ve gotten a countless amount of new blazers that retail at $ 200(all from $ 4-​$ 8). I got a gorgeous antique candle holder for $ 11!!! I will most likely be back next week… There’s nothing like the thrill of good finds at a thrift shop!

4 stars for the clothing selection. I spent 50.00 on three pairs of gently used name brand jeans and 4 great tops. You can always find something there. There is a wide selection of dresses that are in style. I do not have any children, but the baby clothing selection is phenomenal!
The shoes are really nothing special, barely fashionable (but very functional). I find that the price of the furniture they are selling does not necessarily reflect the quality. I thought many pieces were overpriced.
Ir’s a grest place to browse and they also have used books, VHS and DVDs.

Do Not Use Their Pickup Service!
I don’t know about the store but the pickup service is awful.
I had a stove and some furniture to donate so I scheduled a pickup on their website. It was about 3 weeks out but I could wait. A few days later I got a call from them saying a truck would be in my area 2 weeks earlier than scheduled and would I like a pickup. I agreed. The pickup day arrived but I never received any information about a time window for the pickup. That afternoon I called to get an ETA for the truck and was told I had canceled the pickup. I hadn’t done any such thing but all I got was a «Sorry hon, you’ll just have to schedule another one.» I went back to the website and scheduled another pickup. This time I received a phone call saying they don’t accept stoves and they can take items left in the driveway (marked SA). The website clearly lists Stove as an item for donation and «In Driveway Marked for SA» as a pickup location.
I put the stove up on Freecycle and it was gone in 2 days. Beverly Bootstraps took the furniture for their thrift store. There are plenty of other charities who will take my donations. I’m giving to them from now on.

I’ve been going to «Salvy’s» as we have called it since i was a wee tyke. The dark dismal place where we went to go school shopping or if we needed a bureau. They have recently revamped the Saugus location. It’s neat, clean, and still easy to find things you’re looking for. The furniture is a bit pricey for what i would think they’d charge at the Salvation Army… but still worth a look.

I gotta say been giving housewares and clothing here for years !
I feel very blessed and like to pay it forward for a great life I have !!
And feel its the best way to give back to those who defiantly need some things that may otherwise can’t afford !!!
Besides I can’t see throwing out things that kids grow out of or don’t want after they worn two of three times !!
Salvation Army store has a pretty big selection to chose from !!
Great employee’s and very friendly staff !!
Gotta give them credit that there prices are so low almost anyone in need can afford

You can even drop off almost any parking lot like stop and shop has a drop for donations and books !

Although this is one of the bigger locations, I wasn’t a big fan of it. mainly because I really had to pee and went into the public bathroom and saw some bloody tissues and a needle in the trash can. I was horrified. I know it isn’t the fault of the store and I blame it on the irresponsible person who would do something like that, but it kinda freaked me out.
They have a huge selection of decent clothing that I looked through briefly and the staff members I encountered were really kind… it’s just not a place I would want to frequent based on my bathroom experience.
I do think that Salvation Army does wonderful things for the community and that’s the only reason they get 3 stars. Otherwise I would have given a 2.

I go to drop off my Clothes at least once Monthly… and on rare occassions I will stop in (when Looking for somthing)…
Im still dying for the day I go in & find my old shirt… I do donate TONS here, between my old things, The BF’s or My sons… I shop alot & then in 2 months am usually over my purchase so I need to donate often…
I love what they do here & the convenience of dropping off…
The store always seems overpriced but if you pick & search you can find real deals!
