Description

Specialties

Montalvo Arts Center is an oasis of culture and nature whose mission is to create and present arts of all types, nurture artists, and use our historic Villa, buildings, and grounds in innovative ways that engage people in the creative process.

Located in the Saratoga hills, Montalvo occupies a Mediterranean-style villa on 175 stunning acres, which Senator James Duval Phelan left to the people of California for the encouragement of art, music, literature, and architecture.

The organization is also home to the Lucas Artists Programs, which offers facilities and staff supportive of the creative process, state-of-the-art technology and an environment conducive to both individual practice and the energetic exchange of ideas among international and culturally diverse fellows.

Funding for Montalvo’s arts programs is provided by contributions from individuals, foundations, corporations and government agencies.

Montalvo is also one of the Bay Area’s première wedding venues!

History

Established in 1912.

Montalvo Arts Center was previously known as Villa Montalvo, a historic landmark built in 1912 by James Duval Phelan, a U.S. Senator and former Mayor of San Francisco. At the time of his death in 1930, Senator Phelan willed Montalvo to be «used as far as possible for the development of art, literature, music, and architecture by promising students.»

Following that directive, Montalvo has served the community for over 75 years as a center for creativity, offering art courses, performing arts events, gallery exhibitions, educational opportunities, artist residencies and more. Today, Montalvo and its arts programs serve nearly 200,000 visitors each year.
