A&A Gemological Lab specializes in the identification, analysis and valuation of gems, jewelry & timepieces. The Lab has been accredited by the Accredited Gemologists Association as a Certified Gem Lab since 1992. With offices in Schenectady and Saratoga Springs, NY, A&A services a wide range of clients including the trade, consumer groups, financial institutions and the legal community, including local, state and federal government agencies. Appointments are conducted in a safe, secure, professional laboratory environment designed to create an interactive process between the appraiser and the client. Typically, the finished work product is delivered within a day or two. Generally, gem identifications can be performed in front of the client, while you wait. For assignments that involve many items, the turn around time is discussed prior to the commencement of any work.

History

Established in 1979.

A&A Gem Lab began when one half of the original owners returned from California after completing their Graduate Gemologist diploma from the Gemological Institute of America. Gemological laboratories were few and far between back in the late 70’s, so they decided that it might be fun to start a new business and career. The business was sold to James Naughter in 1991 and he has continued to transition the laboratory to a renowned regional gemological gem testing laboratory and valuation entity.

Business Owner

James Naughter is an independent appraiser of fine jewelry serving the greater Capital District area. His field of expertise encompasses valuation theory and how it applies to the appraisal practice. Mr. Naughter has been a part of the jewelry industry since 1980. After completing a BS degree from Siena College in 1982, he earned his Graduate Gemologist (GG) diploma from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) in 1986 with follow-​up training through the Gem-​A. He has worked in both estate jewelry as well as family owned jewelry ventures. He has operated A&A Gemological Laboratory since 1991. The offices are located in Schenectady & Saratoga Springs, NY. A&A is a designated Certified Gem Laboratory by the Accredited Gemologists Association and must re-​certify every two years. Mr. Naughter is a former Vice-​President, Laboratory Chair and board member. Most recently, he is a co-​founder of the Association of Independent Jewelry Valuers, A UK based organization.
