History

Established in 1976.

Before «Careful Moving and Storage» came to be, Karl Bastian started «Bastian Moving and Storage» in 1975. Soon after, he acquired the popular logo of the mother cat carrying her kitten; which has a lengthy and interesting history of it’s own. Karl was always amazed at the logo’s capability to bring in the business and wanted to promote the mother cat image as something that people would easily recognize and respond to. Today, Careful Moving and Storage has expanded service to operating all over California and beyond, taking care of your move no matter how big or small it is.

In 1975, Karl Bastian started «Bastian Moving and Storage,» which eventually became Careful Moving and Storage in 1976. For years Karl operated in the North bay and San Francisco area before expanding to serve all of California in the early 90’s. Karl retired and sold that business in 1998, but kept the cat logo and after a period of time began work on the Careful Moving Network concept. Moving forward, Karl now operates Careful Moving and Storage from the stand point of becoming the must trusted and recognized name in moving for northern California and beyond.

Careful movers were rushed to get the job done and broke furniture and my late mothers Bavaria dinner ware. I wouldn’t trust this company to pack sand and move it! If I could rate this company with no stars I would!

We called Careful for our move to Oregon. I had read the bad reviews and had more or less assumed that they were just from needy, hard-​to-​please customers. So we had Careful come to our house to write a quote. We were really pleased with the price. We also appreciated that they arrived on time and were really thorough with explaining everything. When we were ready to book our move, we called ‘em. No answer, so we left a message. Repeated this 5 times and sent a couple of e-​mails over the next 2 weeks and never heard a word back!!!
We ended up booking our move with North Bay Moving and Storage who uses a national van line. They were awesome, but of course I would have preferred to give business to a local company.

Wyatt and Joe were great! They moved fridges, furniture and household items from my house to my rental unit and were super careful and respectful of my things. No scratches on walls or items. Steve booked me in on very short notice and I was very appreciative. All were very professional and courteous. The whole process was great! Highly recommend!

If I was only rating the work crew, I’d give this company 4 stars. It’s the owner (?) Steve and one of the foremen, Soloman, that don’t deserve anyone’s business. Job was scheduled for 1pm. My cell phone rec’d call from Soloman at 1:05 saying he’d be there in 20 minutes. Not knowing he’d called, I called him from the job site at 1:10 and he said his crew would be there in 15 – 20 minutes. After job was done he ADAMANTLY insisted he was there at 1pm! Then got snippy when I disputed this and grudgingly took off 15 minutes. Then was surprised to learn I had to pay another hour ($ 150) for ‘travel time’ back and forth from the job. Called the next day to talk to Steve about the travel time charge. His response? «I don’t have time for a 50-​minute phone call right now…» Really? How about «I’m terribly busy, can I call you back as a valued customer in an hour or so?» Too bad these guys have pretty good employees but I’ll never recommend or refer them.

This place is not open for business that I could see. My girlfriend asked for my help because I had a truck and we were to pick up a couch she had there to take to her daughter. She called 7 or 8 times throughout an entire day in which they claimed to be open and left several messages saying she would be there the next day to pick up her couch, which was stored along the wall and not in a vault that had to be pulled. No one ever called her back. We arrived the next day to find the place open, the fork lift parked out front and was told we could not possibly get our couch because we did not have an appointment. Appointment??? How exactly are you supposed to do that if no one answers the phone.
Then the story changed to, we could not get the couch because everyone was sick and nobody was there. Except the fellow who always helped my friend before was standing just outside the door. He could not look us in the eye and began to sweep cigarette butts off the sidewalk as we were told that nobody could help us. In the end, the owners and at least one worker were on site, we were told we could not have our couch because there was construction going on inside the building and that was that. It was maddening not to mention unprofessional and not the least bit shady. We left empty handed and steaming.
There are lots of great moving and storage places in Santa Rosa so don’t bother with this one. It had the feeling of a place with the repo man just outside.

My mother had hired this company to move her things to a new home. She is elderly, and a disabled United States Veteran. Over the weekend I traveled to Santa Rosa in order to help her pack her things. We were not able to complete one of the rooms in time (it is a two bedroom apartment), so she called Steve and asked for someone to help finish what is left of the packing. He said this will be fine for $ 150 additional, so she agreed. This morning a couple of guys showed up, told her that it will instead be $ 900 additional, said they cannot help finish the packing, and began to move a few things outside. She went to her room to get her check book, not happy with the extreme increase, but still willing to pay it. Seeing that this was so last minute she felt she didn’t have a choice. While she was in her room the guys left without saying anything to her. They were just gone. My mother then called Steve to gain some understanding. He told her that they got impatient, did not have the time, and will be back tomorrow. Her things are still sitting outside right now!!! She called me in panic not knowing what to do. She is unable to lift heavy things at her age to bring them back inside, and I am two hours away, at work. I have tried calling the company several times. All phones ring to Steve, and he is not answering, or responding to my calls/​messages. Is this how a woman in her 70’s, who has served this country, who is disabled, and on a limited fixed income supposed to be treated??? Thank goodness they have not been paid yet!

What a fabulous team and experience. Joe, Ty and Eddie were so professional, courteous and Yes very CAREFUL! We had some antique and oversized pieces that necessitated taking apart and reassembling in order to get them moved. They had all the tools and know how. really responsive to all our needs and overall terrific. Thanks guys!

We called Careful because of their cute trucks, the ones with the mama cat carrying the kitten. Too cute! But then we got exceptional service to boot. Moving is awful, but they actually made it bearable. From the beginning, with our estimate with Don, to the actual moving day with Eddie, Antonio, and Roy (dream team!!), it was all just a breeze. So polite, courteous, professional and fast! Thank you so much!

Fantastic! This is the 2nd time we used Careful — and again — great job! Last time they brought their truck and their 2 guys. THis time I rented my own truck (moving much farther this time). The 2 guys who showed were great at packing, handled my items with care and packed the truck with convenience and kept my future needs in mind. I cannot say enough good about these guys. Call them — make the move easy on yourself — call Careful!

This was our first time using any moving company and this was a great experience! The guys (Eddie and Tyler) were efficient, took direction well, treated our belongings with respect and were overall awesome! They got my kitchen packed up in record time and were really great about getting everything out of the house in RP and into our storage unit in San Jose. The only hiccup was it was sometimes hard to get ahold of anyone at the office or get a call back but once we did connect everything was great. Steve answered all my questions and was very straightforward about how everything would work and what the cost would be. Would definitely recommend and use them again!

I am not going to say this was the best experience we have had in moving but I can say that Careful Movers did pick up our goods from 2 separate homes and delivered
them to Oregon, on time, and on budget. Everyone that was involved with the move

Stay clear of this company and it’s owner Steve, he likes to accuse you of not paying in full when he hasn’t checked his billing info on you. Also, I have never used any storage services that REMOVE AN ITEM FROM YOUR STORAGE WITHOUT NOTIFICATION AND CANNOT RETURN ITEM TO YOU FOR 2 WEEKS… don’t know wtf that was about but I almost filed a police report to get my professional roadbike back. The employees did their job well otherwise, the company has an owner that’s missing a few marbles.

I have read all of the comments and can sympathize with those unhappy souls. We did have a good experience with Careful Moving. Moving is tough. They are never perfect, lots of stress, lots of unexpected glitches and it’s just a lot of work and money.
We have moved 4 times in the last 20 years or so. Usually by nationally known companys. They weren’t all that great. Careful Moving is a relatively small company and they were super. The best move of any. We have paid a lot more for a lot less. Careful was on time and on the ball. Attitude made all of the difference. The crew was polite and considerate which goes a long ways. Wyatt and his som Michael did the unloading and were great.
The crew was a bunch of harding working young men helping us get through a rough patch. Any move is a rough patch. They get 5 stars for effort and job performance.

Not Careful
The crew was professional and courteous. Unfortunately, Steve — the owner is not. The crew accidentally creased our refrigerator door in the move.
Steve was slow in getting back to them during the move and said only to them that he would take care of it.
When we tried to contact him the next day he wouldn’t return our calls.
We went to his office and agreed to do research on our own to remedy the situation. He said he’d have a tech check out the damage and advise him.
No tech showed, he would not return our calls or respond to our emails.
He ducked us for 2 weeks and when I finally got him on the phone he was gruff, rude and accusative. (He actually thought I was another dissatisfied customer at first). After HE was done venting and I was trying to give my controlled perspective, he hung up on me.
This is the worst kind of bait and switch. Sweet as honey to get the job, comes on like a bulldog when his team comes up short.
Still no satisfaction. Not really very Careful

We live in a duplex and used Careful Moving to switch fridges from one unit to the other. Tony and Jeremy did a great job. They were courteous, careful with our fridges and furniture and always asked if there was anything else they could do after the job.

I have used careful movers several times over the past 10 years and have always been pleased with their service. But I just hired them again and several things went wrong.
The movers showed up over an hour late and after only being there for a half hour they asked if they could take a smoke break. They were only at the house for an hour and a half and charged me for 3. They scuffed the newly finished hardwood floor in the living room from sliding a bed across it. After asking Steve if he could send his guys out in a smaller truck due to the driveway being too small, he said no problem that they would come out in a pickup. They ended up bringing the big truck and knocked a bunch of tree branches down and blocked the driveway, the home owners and neighbors were upset by the hole thing. I will never use careful movers again nor will I ever recommend them to anyone else.

Called and made an appointment with Steve. He said they would call around noon to arrange a time. I started calling them when they had not called by 12:45. No answer, left a message, called all three numbers (that go to the same VM) and finally got a call back around 1:30. Showed up after 2pm and immediately told me it would be far more than the estimate. I went with someone who doesn’t charge two hours just because I don’t live in downtown SR…

This team was wonderful They came on time and performed with all due speed while maintaining caution and concern for our valuables. They were not given the exact info and had to fetch a larger truck which they did off the clock.
We were up a steep driveway and they accommodated that with aplomb. Turned out to be a pretty hot day but it all was accomplished with efficiency. They both worked hard and fast. These guys are professionals!
Bottom line: we were pleased and satisfied and would recommend their services to others.

Moving is stressful. Especially when you and your husband decide that moving to Roseville on the spur of the moment for his job promotion and you have to be there in 2 weeks! We got 3 estimates. Careful Moving was the lowest and also provided letters of recommendation for previous jobs and clients. We had to hire them to pack as well because of the time crunch.
The moving crew was cheerful and they were also hard workers. They alotted only 1 day for packing our entire household contents. That one day turned into a day and a half because they did not have enough crew doing only packing.
Careful Movings’s packing job is really bad. We would find things like the lid to the popcorn popper in one box, and the base to the popper in another. The popcorn popper is just a small example. This went on and on like this for 4 days of unpacking. There was really no reason why they couldn’t have been more efficient and kept things in one box instead of us having to unpack another 5 or 6 boxes until we found the «mate». The final straw today was finding the ladle to my favorite soup tureen in the box with the contents of a «junk drawer», and it wasn’t even wrapped in packing paper! It now has a nice chip in it. Oh, and God only knows where the actual soup tureen is! That will take me another 5 or 6 boxes of unpacking to find it!
Don’t hire them to pack. They are good at the moving part of the job, terrible at the packing part.
Regarding payment — one man in the office told me that they would accept cash, checks, Visa or Mastercard. He neglected to tell me about the 2% surcharge to accept the credit card.
